About Legacy

Your Company Is Worth More Than a Guess

For most owners, their business is the largest asset they'll ever hold — and the one they understand least in dollar terms. What is it actually worth? How do you sell it, pass it to your children, or bring in a partner without leaving money, or the family, in pieces? These are the questions Legacy Valuation CPAs has answered for Charlotte owners since 2002.

We are ABV- and CVA-credentialed valuation specialists. In twenty-four years we've valued and guided 600+ businesses through more than $3B in enterprise value — for sales, buyouts, estates, gifts, litigation, and succession. A valuation from us isn't a rough guess; it's a defensible, credentialed opinion that holds up with buyers, the IRS, courts, and families. And an exit plan from us is a roadmap that starts years early, closes the value gaps, and lets you leave on your terms with your legacy intact.

We Start Early

The biggest value gains come from planning years ahead. We help you build value and exit-readiness long before you sell.

We Protect the Legacy

For family and partner transitions, we structure things so the business and the relationships both survive the handoff.

Your Terms, Your Number

Start Before You Sell

The Best Exit Starts Years Early

The owners who sell for the most, and leave the happiest, almost never start the week they decide to go. They start years ahead. A valuation today tells you your number and, just as importantly, the specific gaps between what your business is worth and what it could be worth — customer concentration, owner dependence, messy financials. Fix those over two or three years and you can add seven figures to your sale price. Wait until you're ready to leave and you take whatever the market gives you. We help you start early, build value, and exit on your terms.

  • Know your number and your value gaps
  • Add real value before you go to market
  • Exit on your timeline, not the buyer's

Owner FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a certified business valuation?

Whenever real money or legal consequences hinge on your company's value — a sale, a partner buyout, estate or gift tax, a divorce, litigation, or an SBA loan — you need a defensible number, not a guess. Our ABV- and CVA-credentialed valuations are built to withstand scrutiny from buyers, the IRS, courts, and family. A number you can defend is worth far more than one you can't.

When should I start planning my exit?

Sooner than you think — ideally three to five years before you want to leave. The biggest increases in sale value come from fixing value gaps (customer concentration, owner dependence, clean financials) over time, and from tax planning that can't be done at the last minute. Starting early routinely adds six or seven figures to an owner's proceeds.

Can you help me pass the business to my children or employees?

Yes — succession and ESOPs are core to what we do. We value the business fairly, structure the transfer to be tax-smart, and design it to protect both the company's future and the family or team relationships. These transitions are as much about people as numbers, and we treat them that way.

How is your valuation different from a broker's estimate?

A broker's estimate is a marketing opinion aimed at winning your listing. Our valuation is an independent, credentialed opinion built on rigorous methodology and documented to be defensible for tax, legal, and transaction purposes. Both have a place, but only one holds up when it's challenged.

What credentials do you hold?

Our valuation specialists hold the Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV) and Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) credentials — the recognized standards for business valuation. Combined with our CPA foundation, that's what makes our opinions credible where it counts.

How are fees structured?

A valuation is a fixed-fee engagement based on the complexity of your business and the purpose of the valuation, quoted up front. Exit and succession planning are scoped as ongoing engagements. Your initial consultation is complimentary, and we're transparent about cost before any work begins.
