A Point of View, Held With Restraint

There is a great deal of competent architecture and very little architecture with a point of view. Most buildings are the sum of their constraints — code, budget, program — resolved capably and forgotten. The work that endures is different: it takes those same constraints and, through a clear idea held with discipline, turns them into something that makes you feel a particular way when you stand inside it. That is the only kind of architecture Vantage Studio is interested in making. For fourteen years, from our studio in the LA Arts District, we've designed signature homes, commercial spaces, and cultural buildings across Los Angeles, each organized around a single strong idea and executed with restraint — the confidence to leave out everything that doesn't serve the concept. We are, above all, architects of light and volume: the way a room is proportioned, the way daylight enters and moves across a surface, the way a space compresses and then releases as you move through it. These are the tools that separate a building you occupy from one you remember. And we are as rigorous about delivery as about design — our ideas are ambitious but buildable, and we hold the concept and the quality from the first sketch through the final punch list, on real budgets and real sites. The result is architecture that is confident without being loud, timeless rather than trend-driven, and unmistakably itself. In a city with no shortage of buildings, that point of view — clear, disciplined, and deeply felt — is what we bring, and it is the whole reason clients come to us.

The Vantage Way

Three Convictions

For architecture with a point of view, Los Angeles comes to Vantage Studio.

One Strong Idea

Every project is organized around a single clear concept. The idea is what turns a building into architecture.

Restraint Is Confidence

We leave out everything that doesn't serve the idea. Editing, not adding, is where the power comes from.

Light Is the Material

Proportion, volume, and the movement of daylight are our real tools — the difference between occupied and remembered.

Why Clients Choose Us

Ambition, Made Buildable

What it means to have Vantage Studio design your project.

A Real Point of View

We bring a clear, disciplined idea to every project — not a house style, a way of thinking about space and light.

Architects of Light

We design the way daylight enters, moves, and reveals a space — the quality you feel before you can name it.

Restraint Over Excess

Confident, edited, and timeless. We leave out the noise so the idea and the space can do the talking.

Ambition That Gets Built

Our concepts are bold but buildable — resolved technically and delivered on real budgets and real sites.

Award-Winning Work

Fourteen years of recognized, published projects across residential, commercial, and cultural architecture.

Concept, Protected

We hold the idea and the quality from first sketch to final punch list, so the vision survives construction.

How We Work

From Idea to Landmark

A rigorous, considered process for architecture worth doing well.

1

Concept & Feasibility

We find the idea, test it against the site and budget, and establish the ambition before anything is fixed.

2

Design Development

We develop the concept into architecture — plan, section, light, material, and detail, resolved as one whole.

3

Documentation & Permitting

We produce the drawings and carry the project through LA's permitting, review, and approvals.

4

Construction

We stay on through the build, protecting the concept and the quality until the project is realized.

Why It Matters

A Building, or Something More

Anyone can produce a building; comparatively few can produce architecture, and the gap between the two is where all the value lives. A building shelters a program adequately and is forgotten. Architecture does its job just as well and does something more — it organizes light and space around an idea so that being inside it changes how you feel and how you live. That 'something more' is not decoration or expense; it comes from a clear point of view held with discipline, and it is precisely what most projects lack and what the best ones are made of. It's also, quietly, the most practical thing a client can invest in. A space designed with real conceptual and spatial rigor works better day to day, endures without dating because it was never chasing a trend, becomes a landmark that draws people and lifts a brand or a neighborhood, and holds and grows its value in a way generic construction never does. The premium for architecture over mere building is small against the lifespan of what you're making and the difference it makes every day you use it. That is the case for hiring architects with a genuine point of view rather than settling for the competent and forgettable — and making that difference, on ambitious projects for clients who want it, is the entire reason our studio exists.

  • A clear idea is what makes architecture, not building
  • Works better, endures longer, doesn't date
  • Becomes a landmark that lifts its context
  • Holds and grows value over a long lifespan

Good Questions

Working With a Contemporary Architect, Answered

What do you mean by 'a point of view'?

We mean that every project is organized around a single, clear idea, and that idea is held with discipline through every decision. A lot of architecture is competent but has no thesis — it's the sum of its constraints, resolved and forgotten. Our work starts from a concept about how a space should feel and how light and volume should behave, and everything else serves that. It's not a fixed house style we stamp on projects; it's a way of thinking that produces a different, more considered result each time. That clarity is what turns a building into architecture, and it's the thing clients come to us for.

Do you only design ultra-modern buildings?

We're a contemporary practice, so our work is modern in sensibility — driven by light, volume, restraint, and material rather than applied ornament — but it's never cold or formulaic. Contemporary, to us, means designed for now and for the specific client, site, and program, with a point of view, rather than copying a historical style or chasing a trend. The result reads as clean, confident, and timeless. If you're drawn to architecture that feels current, considered, and unmistakably itself rather than borrowed, that's exactly the register we work in.

Do you do residential, or commercial, or both?

Both, along with cultural work, and we think each makes the others stronger. The rigor of a cultural building sharpens our houses; the intimacy of residential work humanizes our commercial spaces. What connects all of it is the approach — one strong idea, executed with restraint and a command of light and volume — applied whether we're designing a home in the hills, a workplace, a retail space, or a cultural landmark. Clients sometimes come to us for one and return for another. If you have an ambitious project in any of these areas, it's likely a fit.

Are your designs actually buildable on a real budget?

Yes — buildability and budget discipline are central to how we work, not afterthoughts. A bold idea that can't be built, or blows the budget, isn't good architecture; it's a fantasy. Our concepts are ambitious but resolved technically, and we design to the budget from the start, making the concept and the constraints work together rather than in opposition. We also stay involved through construction to protect the design and the cost. The point is architecture that is genuinely realized — the striking thing you approved on paper is the thing that actually gets built, on time and on budget.

What does hiring you cost, and how does it work?

Architectural fees are typically a percentage of construction cost or a negotiated fixed fee based on the scope and ambition of the project, and after an initial conversation we provide a clear framework with full transparency. Work at this level is an investment, and it pays back — in a project that functions better, endures longer, becomes a landmark, and holds its value — so we're glad to discuss it in those terms. We're candid about numbers from the first meeting, and we take on a limited number of projects at a time so each receives the studio's full attention.

What areas do you work in?

Our studio is in the LA Arts District, and we work throughout Los Angeles and Southern California — Silver Lake, Venice, Los Feliz, the Hollywood Hills, Pasadena, and beyond. We know the light, the terrain, the permitting landscape, and the exceptional builders and consultants who can realize ambitious work here, which matters enormously on architecture that pushes. For a project of the right scale and spirit further afield, we're glad to talk. If you're planning something significant in the LA area and want architecture with a genuine point of view, we'd love to hear about it.
