The Shop

Boise's Off-Road & Overland Shop

There's a real difference between a shop that bolts on the biggest lift and tires it can sell you and a shop that actually understands how a rig behaves when you're miles from pavement — and Basecamp is firmly the latter. For fifteen years we've built and serviced the trucks, Jeeps, and 4x4s that get the Treasure Valley into the Idaho backcountry, and the reason our builds work is simple: we wheel every weekend, so we build the way we'd build our own rigs. That means we start by asking how and where you actually go — rocks, mud, sand, overland miles, or all of it — because the right build for a weekend trail runner is different from the right build for a week-long overland trip, and 'the biggest everything' is usually the wrong answer. It means our bumpers, sliders, and mounts are fabricated and welded in-house, not bolted on from a box, so they're stronger and fit right. It means we get suspension geometry correct so your rig drives well on the highway and articulates on the trail instead of just sitting tall in a parking lot. And it means honest advice — we'll talk you out of parts you don't need and toward the recovery gear and know-how you do. Whether it's your first lift, a set of proper all-terrains, full armor, or a complete overland build with a roof tent and drawers, you're working with people who've been stuck, done the recovery, and learned what actually holds up out there. Bring us your rig and where you want it to take you, and we'll build it to go there and back.

Why Basecamp

Built by Real Wheelers

What fifteen years on the trail gets your build.

We Wheel What We Build

We're out there every weekend. Our builds are shaped by real trail experience, not a catalog — capability you can trust.

In-House Fabrication

Bumpers, sliders, mounts, and armor fabricated and welded here — stronger, better-fitting, and built for abuse.

Trail-Tested

Every build type we sell, we've run hard ourselves. If it doesn't hold up on the trail, we don't put it on your rig.

Built for Your Terrain

Rocks, mud, sand, or overland miles — we spec the build for how and where you actually go, not one-size-fits-all.

Recovery-Ready

Winches, recovery points, and the know-how to use them. We set you up to get unstuck, not just to look capable.

Honest Advice

We'll talk you out of what you don't need and toward what you do. The right build for your goals and your budget.

The Basecamp Standard

Why Wheelers Trust Their Rigs to Us

Three things a real off-road shop gets right.

We Build for the Trail

Real capability and correct geometry — a rig that goes and comes back, not a mall-crawler that just sits tall.

We Fabricate In-House

Armor, bumpers, and mounts welded here to fit and to last. Fabrication is the difference between a build and a bolt-on.

We Wheel It Ourselves

We run what we sell, every weekend. If we wouldn't trust it on our own rig, it doesn't go on yours.

Overland

From Daily Driver to Backcountry Rig

An overland build is a different kind of project than a rock-crawler, and getting it right takes someone who's actually spent nights in the backcountry — which is exactly what we do. The goal of an overland rig isn't maximum articulation for a hardcore trail; it's self-sufficiency and comfort over long distances and multiple days away from anything, while still being a vehicle you can happily drive every day. That balance is the whole art of it. We build overland rigs around how you'll really use them: a roof tent or ground setup for sleeping, a drawer and storage system that keeps your gear organized and accessible, a dual-battery or power system to run a fridge and charge devices, the right suspension to carry all that weight without wallowing, protection for the miles of gravel and washboard you'll cover, and recovery gear for when the route gets interesting. And because it still has to get you to work on Monday, we're careful not to over-build it into something impractical. We've taken our own rigs deep into the Idaho mountains for a week at a time, so we know which details matter and which just add weight and cost. Whether you're outfitting for weekend trips or a months-long adventure, we'll build you a rig that's ready for the backcountry and still a pleasure to live with. Tell us where you want to go, and we'll build the vehicle to take you there.

Rigs We've Built

I brought Basecamp a stock Tacoma and told them I wanted to run the backcountry without getting stranded. They didn't just sell me the biggest lift and tires — they asked how and where I wheel, then spec'd a build that actually works for Idaho terrain. The suspension, armor, and recovery setup are dialed, the fabrication on the bumper and sliders is genuinely better than the bolt-on stuff, and everything has held up hard on the trail. These guys wheel what they build, and it shows in every detail. My rig goes anywhere now, and I trust it completely.

After a shop in another state botched my lift, Basecamp fixed it right and re-did the geometry so my 4Runner actually drives and articulates the way it should. They're real off-roaders, not a parts counter — the advice was honest, they talked me out of stuff I didn't need, and the in-house welding on my rock sliders is art. When I broke an axle two hours into the backcountry, their recovery advice got me home. I won't take my rigs anywhere else in the Treasure Valley. Trail-tested, straight-shooting, and seriously skilled.

Basecamp turned my daily-driver Tundra into a proper overland rig — roof tent, drawer system, dual battery, armor, and the suspension to carry it all — and did it without turning it into something I couldn't drive to work. Their overland knowledge is deep, the build quality is excellent, and they thought through details I never would have. We've taken it deep into the Idaho mountains for a week at a time with zero issues. If you want a backcountry-capable vehicle built by people who actually live it, this is the shop. Couldn't be happier.

Good Questions

Off-Road Builds, Answered

How much does an off-road build cost?

It depends entirely on what you want the rig to do, and honestly, that's the first conversation we have — not a number, but your goals. A set of quality all-terrain tires and a modest leveling kit is an accessible starting point; a full build with a proper long-travel suspension, in-house-fabricated armor, winch, lockers, and a complete overland setup is a much bigger project. The single most important thing we do is make sure you're spending on what actually helps you, because it's very easy to sink money into the biggest, tallest everything and end up with a rig that looks capable but drives poorly and isn't dialed for how you really wheel. We'll ask how and where you go, then spec a build that fits your goals and your budget, and we're happy to stage it over time — start with tires, suspension, and recovery basics, then add armor and overland gear as you go. Come in or send us photos and tell us your plans, and we'll give you honest numbers and a sensible order to do things in.

Will a lift and bigger tires still drive well on the highway?

Done right, absolutely — and 'done right' is exactly where a lot of shops fall short. When you lift a vehicle and add larger tires, you change the suspension geometry, the steering, and often the gearing, and if those aren't addressed properly the result is a rig that wanders on the highway, drives harshly, and wears parts out fast. We correct geometry, re-gear when the tire size calls for it, and choose suspension components tuned for ride quality as well as articulation, so your rig drives well on pavement and performs on the trail. We wheel our own builds every weekend and also drive them daily, so a build that only works in a parking lot is useless to us too. We'll be honest about the tradeoffs of a given lift height and tire size — bigger isn't always better for a vehicle you daily-drive — and steer you toward a setup that gives you the capability you want without ruining the on-road manners. The goal is a rig that's genuinely good to live with and ready when the pavement ends.

Do you fabricate custom parts, or only install bolt-on kits?

Both, and the in-house fabrication is a big part of what sets our builds apart. Plenty of good bolt-on parts exist and we're happy to install them, but the reality is that off-road abuse finds the weak points in mass-produced kits, and a lot of what really protects and performs on a serious rig benefits from being fabricated and welded to fit your specific vehicle. We build bumpers, rock sliders, skid plates, mounts, and custom brackets right here in the shop, which means stronger construction, a better fit, and the ability to build exactly what your rig and your use case need rather than settling for whatever's in a catalog. It also means we can repair and reinforce trail damage properly. So when you come to us with a build, we'll use quality off-the-shelf components where they make sense and fabricate custom where it makes the rig genuinely better — and we'll tell you honestly which is which. Real fabrication skill is the difference between a shop that assembles parts and one that builds rigs, and it's the heart of what we do.

Can you build an overland rig I can still drive every day?

Yes — and keeping it daily-drivable is a design goal we take seriously, not an afterthought. The whole point of a well-built overland rig for most people is that it's ready for a backcountry adventure at a moment's notice but also completely practical for the commute, the grocery run, and everyday life the rest of the time. That means we're deliberate about weight, ride quality, and usability: suspension tuned to carry your gear and camp setup without wallowing or beating you up on pavement, storage and power systems that are convenient rather than cumbersome, and choices that add real capability without turning your vehicle into something impractical or miserable to park. We've built our own rigs this exact way and live with them daily between trips, so we know where the balance points are. We'll help you prioritize the outfitting that matters for how you'll actually travel — sleeping, storage, power, protection, and recovery — while making sure the finished rig is one you're happy to drive to work on Monday. Backcountry-ready and daily-drivable aren't opposites; getting both is just a matter of building it thoughtfully.
