About Halsted & Vine

A Proper Barbershop, the Old-School Way

Somewhere along the way, getting a haircut turned into a rushed, ten-minute transaction. We opened Halsted & Vine in 2012 to bring back the other thing — the barbershop as a place, a craft, and a chair worth sitting in.

Every one of our barbers is a master of the trade: trained on classic technique, sharp with clippers and a straight razor alike, and genuinely interested in giving you a cut that actually suits you. We take the time to consult, we finish with a hot towel, and we stand behind the work. The prices are honest, the coffee's on, and whether you've booked the chair or walked in off Fulton Market, you'll leave sharper than you came in. That's the whole idea — and fifty thousand cuts later, it still is.

  • Master barbers, classic technique
  • Consultation + hot-towel finish on every cut

Why Halsted & Vine

The Difference Is in the Details

A great cut isn't luck — it's craft, care, and taking the time to do it right. Here's what you get in our chair.

Master Barbers

Every barber here is trained and seasoned in classic technique — clippers, scissors, and the straight razor.

A Real Consultation

We talk through what you want before the first cut, so you leave with a style that actually suits you.

The Hot-Towel Finish

Every cut ends the old-school way — a hot towel and a clean neck line. It's the detail that makes the difference.

Honest Prices

Clear, fair pricing with no surprise add-ons and no pressure. A great cut shouldn't cost you a fortune.

Walk-Ins Welcome

Booked or not, there's a chair for you. Show up off Fulton Market and we'll take good care of you.

A Finish That Holds

We cut for how your hair actually grows, so it still looks sharp two and three weeks down the line.

The Straight-Razor Shave

A Shave Worth Slowing Down For

There is nothing quite like a proper straight-razor shave, and almost nowhere left that still does it right. At Halsted & Vine, it's a ritual we've kept exactly as it should be.

It starts with hot towels to open the skin, then a warm, brushed lather, and a traditional straight-razor shave worked with the grain and against it for the closest, smoothest finish you'll ever have. We finish with a cool towel and a balm to soothe the skin. It takes time, and that's the point — twenty minutes in the chair that feel like an hour off your feet. Come in for the shave alone, or add it to a cut with The Executive. Either way, you'll understand why men have been coming to barbershops for this since long before there was anywhere else to go.

Chicago's Loyal Regulars

Been chasing a barber who actually listens for years, and I finally found it at Halsted & Vine. The cut was exactly what I asked for, the hot-towel finish was a proper experience, and it still looked sharp two and a half weeks later. This is what a real barbershop is supposed to feel like — no fuss, just a great cut every time.

Got the straight-razor shave for my wedding morning and it was the best shave of my life — closest I've ever had, and the hot towels alone were worth it. The whole shop has that old-school feel but the work is dialed in. My groomsmen all rebooked before we left. Can't recommend these guys enough.

I bring my son here now too — they're just as patient and precise with a nervous eight-year-old as they are with the executives who come in on their lunch break. Fair prices, no upsell, and every barber in the place clearly knows their craft. It's become part of our routine and neither of us would go anywhere else.
Devon W.Cut & Beard, Wicker Park
Walk-in on a Saturday, ten-minute wait, and I was out looking the sharpest I have in months. The skin fade was flawless and they lined up my beard perfectly. It's rare to find a shop that's this consistent whether you book or just show up. Halsted & Vine is the real deal — my go-to from now on.

Barbershop Questions, Answered

Do you take walk-ins or do I need to book?

Both. We always keep chairs open for walk-ins every day we're open, so you're welcome to just show up off Fulton Market — most days the wait is short. That said, if you want a specific barber or a specific time (Saturdays get busy), booking a chair ahead online guarantees your spot. Either way you'll get the same cut and the same care.

How much is a haircut?

Our classic cut is $38, a skin fade is $42, and a cut paired with beard work is $55. A traditional straight-razor shave is $45, and The Executive — cut, shave, and hot-towel treatment together — is $70. Kids under 12 are $28. Every price includes a consultation and a hot-towel finish, and there are no surprise add-ons at the chair. What's on the menu is what you pay.

What actually comes with a cut?

Every cut starts with a real consultation — we talk through length, style, and how your hair grows before we pick up the clippers — and finishes the old-school way with a hot towel and a clean neck line. We take the time to get it right rather than rushing you in and out, and we cut for how your hair will actually sit over the next few weeks, so it holds its shape well past the first day.

Do you do straight-razor shaves?

We do, and it's one of the things we're known for. It's the full traditional ritual: hot towels to open the skin, a warm brushed lather, and a straight-razor shave worked with and against the grain for the closest finish you can get, then a cool towel and balm to soothe everything after. It takes about twenty minutes and it's worth every one of them. Book it on its own or add it to a cut with The Executive.

Are you good with kids and first cuts?

Absolutely — first cuts are honestly one of our favorite things. Our barbers are patient and calm with the young gents, and we bring the same craft to a nervous eight-year-old as we do to anyone else, just with a smaller chair and a little more reassurance. Kids under 12 are $28. Plenty of our regulars bring their sons in alongside their own appointment and make a routine of it.

Can I bring a photo of the cut I want?

Please do — a photo is genuinely the best way to show us what you're picturing, and we'd much rather see one than guess. During the consultation we'll give you an honest read on how that style will work with your hair type and how it'll grow out, and we'll tweak it together so it actually suits you rather than just copying the picture. Coming in with a reference is a great start, not a bother at all.
