Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?
Walk right in — we've welcomed walk-ins since 1954 and always will. Grab a seat, read the paper, and we'll get to you; most days the wait is short, though Saturdays get busy. If you'd rather not wait or you want a specific barber or time, you can book a chair ahead online, and we'd recommend that for a Saturday or the Cut & Shave. But there's something to be said for the old way — dropping by, sitting a spell, and taking your turn. Either works fine with us.
How much is a haircut?
Our classic cut is $34 and the gentleman's cut — with a warm towel, clean lineup, and a touch of pomade — is $40. A traditional hot-lather straight-razor shave is $40, and a cut and shave together is $66. A beard trim is $22, and a boys' cut for the under-twelves is $24. Every service includes a hot-towel finish and honest, up-front pricing with no surprise add-ons. We've always believed a good haircut shouldn't cost a fortune, and seventy years on, we still price it that way.
Do you still do straight-razor shaves?
We do, and it's the tradition we're proudest of. The hot-lather straight-razor shave has been part of Dixon & Sons since Earl opened the doors in 1954, and we give it exactly as he did: a hot towel to soften the skin, a warm lather worked in by hand, a straight razor drawn with a steady touch, and a cool towel and tonic to finish. It takes about twenty unhurried minutes and it's the closest, most relaxing shave you'll find. Almost nowhere still does it properly — we're glad to be one of the places that does. Book it alone or add it to a cut.
Is this a good place for a boy's first haircut?
It's one of our favorite things, and there's real history to it — we've given first cuts to fathers, then their sons, then their grandsons, all in the same chairs. Our barbers are patient and kind with the young gentlemen, and we make the first barbershop visit the rite of passage it ought to be, sending them home proud of a proper cut. A boys' cut for the under-twelves is $24. Bring the little one in, let him sit up in a real barber chair, and start a family tradition of your own. Those are the haircuts we remember most.
How long has Dixon & Sons been around?
Since 1954 — over seventy years, all on Woodland Street in East Nashville. Earl Dixon opened the shop with two chairs and a straight razor, his son ran it after him, and today his grandson keeps it going exactly the same way. Three generations of the same family, in the same chairs, cutting hair for a city that's changed enormously around us. Do you take card, or is it cash only?
Both — we may be old-fashioned about the craft, but we're not going to make it hard to pay us. We happily take cards, contactless, and the phone-tap payments, as well as good old cash if that's your preference. Tipping your barber is always appreciated and never expected. However you like to settle up, it's quick and easy, and there are never any hidden fees or surprise charges on top of the price you were quoted. Honest and straightforward, at the chair and at the register — that's how it's always been here.
