Four rooms in a 1901 house on Montford Avenue
Brambleford went up in 1901 for a timber man who wanted a porch he could see the whole street from. It is still the best thing about the house. We bought it in 2007 with orange carpet throughout and have been undoing that ever since.
Montford is the quiet historic neighborhood on the hill; downtown Asheville is fifteen minutes on foot and about four dollars in a cab coming back up.

The Four Rooms
All four have their own bathroom. Every rate includes breakfast and parking.
Rates are per night for two and include breakfast. October books first, then the weeks around Christmas. Send dates and we will tell you honestly what is left.

There is no resort fee and nothing on the bill you did not agree to.
Breakfast, cooked to order
Eight to nine-thirty at one table in the dining room. Eggs however you want them, something baked that morning, and fruit from the tailgate market on Saturdays.
A parking space each
Off-street behind the house, one per room. Montford is permit parking and this is the thing guests thank us for most.
The porch, all day
Rocking chairs, a ceiling fan and a view down Montford Avenue. Most guests end up out there longer than they planned.
A glass at six
Something local poured on the porch most evenings. Nobody has to come down and nobody minds if you do not.
The walk into town
Fifteen minutes downhill to Lexington Avenue, twenty back up. We will draw you the route that avoids the busy road.

Four rooms means October is genuinely hard to get. Everything else is easier than people assume.
01Spring
Dogwood and rhododendron, mild days, and the town still catching its breath. The best rates of the year outside January.
02Summer
Hot in town, ten degrees cooler on the porch, and the Parkway twenty minutes away when you want air.
03October
The leaves, the crowds and our highest rates. Book by March. Every year somebody rings in September and we have to say no.
Eight to nine-thirty, one table
Cooked to order rather than laid out, and served at the one table in the dining room — which is how four strangers end up recommending restaurants to each other by Tuesday.
Tell us the night before if you are leaving early and there will be something in a bag by the door.

What people say afterwards
Four rooms means breakfast is a conversation rather than a queue. We ended up walking into town with the couple from the Attic Room, which is not something a hotel arranges for you.
Fifteen minutes on foot down into town and a porch to come back to. Cynthia knew which breweries were worth it and which were just loud, and she was right both times.
The Garden Suite has its own entrance off the side path, so we came and went at odd hours without waking a soul. Breakfast was still the best part of the day.

There is no lift
The Garden Suite is the ground-floor room. The Attic Room is two flights. Tell us and we will put you where the stairs suit.
One room takes dogs

Children over twelve
A small, quiet house with other people's holidays going on. Over twelve in any room.
No smoking inside
The porch and the garden are both yours if you do.
Asked most often
How far is downtown?
Fifteen minutes on foot going down Montford Avenue and about twenty coming back up, because Asheville is built on a hill. A cab is four or five dollars. We will draw you the route that keeps you off the busy road.
Is breakfast included?
In every rate. It is cooked to order between eight and nine-thirty at one table in the dining room, and there is always something baked that morning. Tell us in advance about anything you do not eat and it is simply handled.
Do you have parking?
One off-street space per room behind the house, included. Montford is permit parking, so this matters more than it sounds — it is the thing guests mention most often when they leave.
How hard is October to book?
Hard. Four rooms and the best leaf fortnight in the eastern United States. People book a year ahead and we turn away somebody most weeks from August. Spring and early summer are lovely and far easier.
Can we bring a dog?
In the Garden Suite, which has its own entrance off the side path and opens onto the garden. No charge. The other three rooms are dog-free because not every guest wants one at breakfast.
Is the house accessible?
Partly, and we would rather say so now. The Garden Suite is on the ground floor with a level entrance from the side path. The other three rooms are up one or two flights of original stairs with a handrail on one side only.
