A Yard Built for Dogs, With a Coffee Bar at the End of It
Most dog-friendly patios in Austin are a patio that tolerates dogs. We did it the other way round: the yard came first, and then we worked out where to put the espresso machine.
Half an acre, fully fenced at six feet, with a double gate so nothing slips out while you're getting in. No grass — decomposed granite over a drainage bed, which sounds unromantic and is the single reason this place doesn't smell in August. Four shade sails and two live oaks cover the yard from about eleven to four, which is the part of a Texas day that actually matters.
The small-dog side is separately fenced with its own gate, because 'they'll be fine together' is a sentence that has ruined a lot of afternoons. Every night after close the whole yard gets hosed, and once a fortnight it gets a proper enzyme wash.

Leashed Through the Gate, Then Free
Both gates, every time, on lead. Once the inner gate is shut you can drop it and most people do. The double gate is the only reason we've never lost a dog to South First Street, and it only works if everyone uses it.

Under twenty-five pounds, and it isn't a suggestion. It exists so nervous and elderly dogs have somewhere the game can't reach them. If your large dog is lovely with small dogs, we believe you, and the answer is still no.

Bags and bins at four points, all free. Granite is unforgiving about this in a way grass isn't — one missed one is noticeable by lunchtime, which is honestly the best enforcement we've got.

1Park on the Gravel, Not the Street
Eighteen spaces behind the building, free, and the overflow lot next door is ours after nine. South First parking is metered and aggressively enforced, which we mention because people learn it the expensive way.
2Both Gates, Lead On
Inner gate stays shut until the outer one clicks. Take a breath in the middle bit and read the yard before you go in — if there's a game running you may want to wait thirty seconds rather than walk into it.
3Pick a Side, Then Sit Down
Big side left, small side right, both fenced separately. Grab any table — nothing is reserved and nobody's saving that one. Order at the window when you're settled, not before.
4Stay as Long as You Like
There's no time limit and we've never asked anyone to move on. The average first visit is about forty minutes; the record, set by a man with two greyhounds and a novel, is six hours and ten minutes.
Questions We Get Every Week
Do I have to have a dog to come?
No, and about a third of the yard on a weekday doesn't. There's a small dog-free deck by the window if you'd rather have your coffee without anything hopeful under the table.
Is my dog allowed off lead?
Yes, once both gates are shut behind you. That's the whole point of the fence. Leads on through the gates every time, and back on before you leave.
What about puppies and vaccinations?
Fully vaccinated only — that means through the final round, usually around sixteen weeks. We don't check paperwork at the gate and we're trusting you on this one. A yard full of unvaccinated puppies is how a parvo scare closes a place like this for a month.
Are dogs in heat allowed?
No, and please don't try it. Same for anything under a stitches-and-cone recovery. Come back in a fortnight and the coffee's on us.
Can I bring more than one dog?
Up to three per person, which is where our own ability to watch them realistically runs out. Four or more is a yard hire — that's not us being awkward, it's just genuinely a different thing.
How does hiring the yard work?
The back third, two hours, up to twelve dogs, and it costs $180 including a round of pup cups. Mostly it's birthdays and rescue-group meetups. Message us with a date and rough numbers and you'll get a real answer, not a form.
When are the adoption mornings?
Saturdays, 9 to noon, in the front corner. Two Austin rescues rotate. Three hundred and ten dogs have gone home from that corner in seven years, and eleven of those are now regulars who come back and behave like they own it.
Is the coffee actually good, or is it a dog place?
It's a dog place and the coffee is good. Beans from a roaster in East Austin, ground to order, sixteen-hour cold brew. We'd rather you judged us on the cold brew than on the concept.
