Most carpentry quotes are one number. That number hides the fact that on a trim job the material might be a fifth of it and on a built-in it might be half. If you cannot see the split, you cannot make a sensible decision about where to spend.
Ours shows labor and material separately on every line. That is how customers work out for themselves that paint-grade poplar instead of white oak saves them more than haggling ever would, or that supplying their own timber is worth the trouble on one job and not on another.

Four Things Worth Knowing Before You Choose
None of these are secrets. They are just rarely explained before the invoice.
Ceiling height changes the profile
A tall crown in an eight-foot room makes the ceiling feel lower, not grander. We will suggest a smaller profile that costs less and looks better.
Paint grade versus stain grade
Painted trim can be poplar or finger-jointed pine. Stained trim has to be solid hardwood with the grain matched. Same room, very different number.
How many inside corners
Straight runs are quick. Every inside corner is a coped joint cut by hand, and a room with six of them takes twice as long as a room with two.
Whether the walls are straight
Trim follows the wall. On an older Lincoln house that means scribing and shimming, and it is the single most common reason a quote comes back higher than someone expected.

Answer everybody
Most people's complaint about carpenters is not price, it is silence. Every enquiry gets a reply the same working day, even when the answer is that we are not right for it.
Show the arithmetic
Labor and material on separate lines means you can see where your money is going and change your mind about material before we order it rather than after.
Take the small jobs
A rotted threshold is a two-hour job and most shops will not quote it. We do them hourly, and roughly half our big jobs started as somebody's two-hour job.
Things We Will Tell You For Free
When the cheaper option is the right one
A simpler profile, a paint finish instead of a stain, a repair instead of a replacement. We would rather do the smaller job and be the carpenter you call next time.
When it is not a carpentry job
Sagging floors are sometimes a foundation problem and swollen doors are sometimes a gutter problem. We will say so and point you at whoever fixes the cause.
When we are not the right shop
We do not do full kitchens, we do not do stairs from scratch, and we will name the Lincoln shop that does rather than stretch to it.
Before You Send It
Can you really price from a photo?
For trim, doors, repairs and most built-ins — yes, if the photo shows the whole run and you can tell us the rough length and the ceiling height. Decks and anything structural need a visit, and we will say so the same day rather than leave you waiting.
Why split labor and material?
Because they move for different reasons. On a trim package the material might be a fifth of the price and on a stain-grade built-in it might be half. Seeing the split is what lets you change the timber rather than argue about the total.
Do you charge for quotes?
No, and there is no deposit until you have read the quote and said yes. If you want changes we re-quote them in writing before doing the work.
Can I supply my own timber?
Yes, and on some jobs it saves real money. We will tell you honestly when it does not — a small trim job where we buy at trade price is usually cheaper our way even after markup.
Do you take small jobs?
Yes, hourly rather than quoted. A sticking door, a rotted threshold, one shelf. It is how about half our customers meet us.
Are you registered and insured?
Lincoln contractor registration C-31872, bonded, with general liability and workers' compensation. Certificates go out with every quote without you having to ask.
