A hand-knotted rug is not floor covering; it is months — sometimes years — of someone's hands, dyes coaxed from plants and insects, wool that remembers everything done to it. Feeding such a thing through a carpet plant's machinery is how heirlooms die quietly.
Anatolia was founded by a third-generation rug family to be the alternative: a true washing atelier where every piece is examined fiber by fiber, dye-tested before a drop of water touches it, washed by hand in full immersion, and dried flat in controlled air. We wash one rug at a time because that is how it must be done, and we have turned away work that machinery could have 'handled' — because handled is not the standard. Cared for is.

How a Fine Rug Is Actually Cleaned
No shortcuts exist. This is the sequence, and it takes the weeks it takes.

Dusting
Decades of dry soil beaten gently from the foundation — the step machine plants skip, and the reason their rugs never feel clean.
Full-Immersion Wash
The rug bathes flat in pH-matched water, worked by hand with soft tools — dyes guarded, wool fed, soil released.

From Your Floor to the Bath and Back
Fine rugs are damaged in transit more often than in washing — folded when they should be rolled, rolled pile-out when they should be rolled pile-in, tossed in vans among ladders. Our white-glove service exists so the journey honors the destination.
Two handlers arrive with gloves, tubes, and wrapping; your rug is photographed, tagged, and rolled correctly at your door; and it travels padded and alone. Delivery reverses the ritual, with placement and pad service if you wish. Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens are weekly rounds; the Hamptons and Connecticut, by arrangement.

Heirlooms, Returned Awake
My grandmother's Tabriz crossed the ocean in 1962 and had never been properly washed. I was terrified to trust anyone with it. Anatolia photographed every inch at intake, explained exactly what eighty years of soil does to wool, and returned it six weeks later with colors I had never seen in my lifetime. My mother cried. This is not cleaning; it is restoration of memory.
As an interior designer I send every client rug here — hand-knotted Moroccans, silk Qums, the lot. The atelier's fiber knowledge is encyclopedic, their honesty about what a rug does and doesn't need is refreshing, and the white-glove logistics make me look organized. What Rug Owners Ask
How is this different from regular carpet cleaning?
Categorically. Carpet cleaning pushes hot detergent through fiber in place; atelier washing is full immersion — the rug bathes flat in pH-matched water and is worked by hand, after dusting has removed decades of dry soil from the foundation. One is maintenance for broadloom; the other is care for something made by hands. Machine plants also wash many rugs together; here, your rug bathes alone.
How long does a wash take?
Two to four weeks in the usual course — examination, dusting, immersion, flat drying, and finishing each take their honest time, and drying cannot be rushed without punishing the wool. Antique, silk, and rescue pieces may take longer, and we'll say so at intake. The rug has waited years for this bath; the schedule respects that.
What does it cost?
By the square foot, varying with fiber, construction, and condition — a written quote follows examination, before any washing begins. Fine-rug washing costs more than carpet cleaning because it is a different craft entirely; it costs far less than the rug, which is the arithmetic that matters. Moth treatment, odor work, and repairs are quoted separately and plainly.
Is my rug insured while in your care?
Fully — from your doorway, through the atelier, and back. Coverage runs to appraisal value (bring documentation for exceptional pieces and we'll note it at intake), and the intake photography and condition report protect both of us. Eighteen years without a claim is the record; the insurance exists so you needn't rely on it.
Can you fix moth damage, worn spots, or fringe?
We treat and stop moth activity definitively, and we clean in ways that make damage honest to assess. For reweaving, re-piling, and structural repair we work with two master restorers we trust with our own family pieces — we'll coordinate the referral and the logistics so the rug makes one journey, not three.
My rug got soaked / the dog had an accident. How urgent is it?
Urgent — call today. Water sets dyes to wandering and invites mildew within days; pet accidents alkalize and burn dyes over weeks. Rescue pieces jump our queue for stabilization (the full wash can follow at schedule), and the difference between a rug saved and a rug mourned is usually the week the owner waited. We answer Tuesday through Saturday, and the machine takes clear messages otherwise.
