Belly Dance Classes in Albuquerque
Shimmies, veils and a room full of women cheering each other on. Start with our six-week beginner course — no experience, no costume, no mirror anxiety required.
A Warm Room for Anyone Who Wants to Move
Veilwind opened on Central Avenue in 2014 to teach belly dance the way it's meant to be danced — as joyful, social and grounded in its Middle Eastern roots.
Every Body Welcome
Our dancers are 18 to 78, every shape and size. Belly dance was never made for one kind of body.
Rooted in Tradition
We teach the music, rhythms and history of Egyptian and Turkish styles alongside the moves.
A Real Community
Monthly haflas — informal dance parties — bring every class together with music and food.
Classes
New dancers start with the six-week beginner course, then join any ongoing class.

In Their Words
I turned fifty and wanted something that was just for me. Belly dance at Veilwind gave me back a body I'd stopped listening to. The women in my Tuesday class have become real friends.
I was terrified of the word 'hips.' The beginner course takes it so slowly and kindly that by week four I was laughing through shimmies I'd never thought I could do.
Joining the troupe was the best decision of my thirties. Performing at the Old Town festival with fifteen women I'd met in class was pure joy.
What to Expect
Wear Something Comfy
Leggings or a flowing skirt and a fitted top. Bare feet or soft dance shoes.
Borrow a Hip Scarf
We lend coin hip scarves so you can hear your movement from the first class.
Move at Your Pace
Everything is taught slowly, with options for knees, backs and every level of fitness.
Stay for Tea
Mint tea after evening classes — the best way to meet everyone.
Common Questions
I've never danced. Is that OK?
Absolutely. The six-week beginner course assumes no experience at all.
Do I have to show my stomach?
Never. Wear whatever you're comfortable in. Many dancers wear a T-shirt the whole time.
Is belly dance only for women?
Classes are open to all adults. Most of our dancers are women, and everyone is welcome in every class.
Am I too old or out of shape?
Our dancers are 18 to 78. Belly dance is low-impact and we always offer gentler options.
Is it good exercise?
Yes — core strength, posture and coordination improve quickly, and drum solo gets your heart rate up.
Do I have to perform?
No. Performing is always optional — many dancers just enjoy class and the monthly hafla.
Starts the First Tuesday of Every Month
Six weeks, $96, hip scarf included. Spaces are limited to fourteen dancers.
