An Improvised Conversation in an Embrace
Barrida opened in a converted Pearl District warehouse in 2011 to teach Argentine tango as a social dance — improvised, connected and danced with anyone in the room. Our teachers trained in Buenos Aires and still return every year.
We teach the embrace, the walk and the conversation between leader and follower before we teach figures. It takes a little patience, and it's why our students feel at home at any milonga in the world.

Ways to Learn Tango
Everyone starts with the Beginner Series. After that, mix classes, practicas and milongas as you like.
The Friday Milonga
Candles on the tables, a DJ playing traditional tandas, and a floor that fills by ten. Our milonga is where classes turn into dancing — and where Portland's tango community has met every Friday for fifteen years.
New to milongas? Come for the 8 PM lesson and our hosts will introduce you, explain the cabeceo and make sure you dance.

Why It Finally Clicked
I'd tried tango twice elsewhere and quit both times. The beginner series here spends a whole week on walking and embrace before any steps — and that's exactly why it finally made sense.
The Friday milonga is the most welcoming I've found in the Northwest. The hosts introduce newcomers, the DJ plays proper tandas, and I've never sat out a whole night.
Private lessons with the two of them rebuilt my embrace from scratch. I dance with more people now and they ask me back.
Four Tuesdays to Your First Milonga
Week 1 — Embrace & Walk
Posture, the embrace and walking together to the music. Nothing else — and that's the point.
Week 2 — The Cross
The cross system and your first pauses, so the dance can breathe.
Week 3 — Ochos
Forward and back ochos, the heart of tango's figure-eight shapes.
Week 4 — Your First Milonga
Put it together, learn the cabeceo, then join us Friday — entry is free.
Tango Questions, Answered
Can I come without a partner?
Yes. Classes rotate partners, and we balance leaders and followers at sign-up. Many students come alone.
Is this ballroom tango?
No — we teach Argentine tango, the improvised social dance from Buenos Aires. It's quite different from the ballroom version.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes and shoes with smooth leather or suede soles that pivot. No rubber-soled sneakers, please.
What's a milonga?
A social tango dance. Music plays in sets called tandas, and dancers invite each other with a glance and a nod — the cabeceo. We'll teach you.
How long until I can dance at a milonga?
After the four-week series, most students are ready to dance the basics at our Friday milonga — especially after the 8 PM lesson.
Can I learn to lead and follow?
Yes, and we encourage it. Understanding both roles makes you a better dancer in either.
New Series Every Month
Four classes, two practicas and your first milonga — $120. Spaces are balanced between leaders and followers.
