Why Ponderosa

The Dealer Handed You Keys, Not Skills.

Nobody mentions it at the sale: a forty-foot rig drives like nothing you've ever owned, and the learning usually happens in a crowded fuel stop with an audience. Ponderosa exists to move that learning somewhere kind — empty lots, quiet roads, and real passes, with a coach who's taught two thousand owners and your actual rig, because that's the one you'll drive.

  • Training in YOUR rig — trailer, fifth wheel, or motorhome
  • Coaches with decades of towing and coach-driving
  • Empty-lot starts, real-road finishes

Every Skill Between Purchase and Paradise

Open the one that's keeping you off the road — every course runs in your rig, at your pace.

First-Time RV Owner Course

The full day one: mirrors, tail swing, lane discipline, fuel stops, and your first fifty confident miles — everything the dealer didn't cover.

Trailer Backing Clinic

The famous half-day: a repeatable steering method, cones before consequences, and backing drills until the campsite fits on the first try.

Motorhome Confidence Course

Class A and C handling — length awareness, crosswinds, city clearances, and the reference points that make big feel manageable.

Mountain Grades & Braking

Central Oregon's essential: gearing, engine braking, and heat management on real passes — because brakes are for adjusting speed, not surviving it.

Campground Maneuvering

Tight loops, low branches, blind sites, and spotting hand signals — practiced in a real campground before your reservation depends on it.

Pre-Trip & Departure Checklists

Hitching, weights, walk-arounds, and the leave-no-antenna-behind routine — the systems that prevent the expensive stories.

How It Works

Driveway to Campground in Four Steps

Most owners are trip-ready inside two sessions — the plan bends to your rig and your nerves.

1

The Rig Talk

A call about your RV, your experience, and your first-trip date — we build the course plan backward from it.

2

The Empty Lot

Mirror setup, reference points, and slow-speed control where the only witness is a coach who's seen it all.

3

Real Roads, Real Grades

Highways, passes, and fuel stops with a coach aboard — the skills proven exactly where you'll use them.

4

The Campground Rehearsal

Arrive, assess, back in, set up — the full ritual, rehearsed until your first real arrival feels like your fiftieth.

Included

Every Course Comes With

Training in Your Own Rig

Skills built in the exact vehicle you'll drive — same mirrors, same length, same brakes. Nothing to re-learn later.

A Spotter's Playbook for Two

Your co-pilot learns the hand signals and radio calls too — because backing is a team sport, and yelling isn't a system.

The Reference Card

Your rig's numbers — heights, weights, tail swing, braking gears — printed on a card that lives in the visor.

A Season of Question Privileges

Text us from the road all season — 'is this site doable?' answered from someone who's seen your driving.

Grades Don't Care How New Your Rig Is.

Every summer, overheated brakes end somebody's dream trip on the way down a pass they climbed just fine. Our mountain course teaches the discipline the manuals bury: gear before grade, engine braking as the primary tool, brake application in pulses, and the pull-out points where heat gets checked. Taught on the real climbs between here and the coast — because that's where you're going.

  • Real pass descents with a coach aboard
  • Engine braking and gearing for your drivetrain
  • Heat checks and the smells worth stopping for

Why New Owners Leave Confident

01

Method Over Muscle

Backing a trailer is geometry, not talent — a repeatable steering method beats instinct every time, especially at site 47 with dinner waiting.

02

Nerves Are Part of the Curriculum

Every skill starts where failure is free and ends where it matters. Confidence built in order doesn't collapse under an audience.

03

The Co-Pilot Counts

We train the team, not just the driver — shared checklists, calm radio calls, and a spotting system that saves marriages and mirrors alike.

Questions

Asked Before the First Course

We just bought our first trailer and I'm honestly intimidated. Normal?

Completely — it's most of our student body. A camper is the biggest thing most people ever drive, and nobody's born knowing tail swing. Two sessions in, the intimidation usually converts to the good kind of excitement.

Do you train in our RV or yours?

Yours — that's the point. Your mirrors, your length, your brakes, your hitch. We bring the cones, the method, and the patience; you keep every skill in the exact rig you'll drive.

Do I need a special license for a big RV in Oregon?

Most RVs don't require one in Oregon, but rules vary by weight and state — and insurance sometimes has opinions. We'll confirm your rig's situation when you book, including for full-timers crossing state lines.

How long until we're ready for a real trip?

Most couples are trip-ready after the owner course plus a backing clinic — about two days total. If your maiden voyage is already booked, tell us the date; readiness-by-deadline is our specialty.

Can my partner learn to drive it too?

Please, yes — a two-driver rig is a safer, happier rig. Second-driver instruction on the same course day is discounted, and the spotter training is included for both of you regardless.

What does a course cost?

In line with other specialized RV instruction — clinics at the accessible end, full owner courses more, with couple and multi-course bundles. Exact pricing comes back with your dates, and it's a rounding error next to the rig.
