The Ice Lot

Eight Acres of Consequence-Free Ice.

Our training lot is groomed like a rink and sized like a runway — polished ice lanes, snowpack sections, and a slush pit, all with nothing to hit for a hundred yards in any direction. It's the one place in Minnesota where losing control is the assignment. You'll skid, spin, recover, and repeat until the panic is gone and only the procedure remains.

  • Groomed ice lanes, refreshed daily all season
  • Nothing to hit — designed run-off everywhere
  • Heated classroom trailer (we're not monsters)
A Session

Slide. Recover. Understand. Repeat.

Three hours that reorganize how your hands and eyes handle winter — most of it behind the wheel.

01
1

The Physics, Fast

Twenty warm minutes on traction, weight transfer, and why your instincts are wrong — then straight to the ice.

02
2

Braking on Glare Ice

Full ABS stops from real speeds — feeling the pulse, learning the distances, recalibrating every following gap you'll ever leave.

03
3

Skids, On Purpose

Induced understeer and oversteer with a coach beside you — eyes up, hands quiet, recovery after recovery until it's boring.

04
4

The Storm Simulation

A full circuit combining hills, stops, and turns in sequence — winter's greatest hits, conquered in one afternoon.

Why Practice Beats Luck

Black Ice Gives You One Second. Spend It Well.

Every winter driver eventually meets the moment: the rear steps out, the wheel goes light, and there's one second before physics decides. Drivers who've rehearsed that second on our ice spend it recovering. Drivers who haven't spend it panicking — and panic always picks the wrong pedal. We exist to pre-load that second with the right answer.

  • Skid recovery rehearsed to reflex, not theory
  • Panic-braking habits found and fixed on ice
  • The calm that comes only from having done it

Why Ice Time Works

Feel Beats Theory

A skid described is trivia; a skid survived — on safe ice, ten times in a row — is a skill. The body learns what the brain can't.

Calibrated Fear

Winter anxiety usually means miscalibration — too scared of the manageable, too casual about the deadly. Ice time resets the scale.

Local Winter, Local Craft

Lake-effect squalls, the Hillside grades, Highway 61 glare ice — our curriculum is built from the exact winter you'll drive.

Twenty Duluth winters of white-knuckling it, and one afternoon on their ice lot taught me more than all of them combined. Feeling the skid start — and fixing it — on purpose, safely, over and over, rewired something. I actually relax driving in snow now.

Moved here from Phoenix in October. By Thanksgiving I could barely leave the driveway; by Christmas — after their First Winter course — I was driving Highway 61 in a snowstorm like I'd grown up here. Best money a transplant can spend.

My son did the teen winter certification the week he got his license. Two months later he hit black ice on Piedmont — and did exactly what they drilled: eyes up, no panic brake, steer to the recovery. He walked in and hugged me. Book the course.
Questions

Asked Before the First Slide

Is sliding around on ice actually safe?

Safer than your commute — that's the whole design. The lot has hundred-yard run-offs in every direction, speeds are controlled, and a coach rides along on every run. Nine winters, thousands of intentional skids, zero incidents.

Should I bring my own car?

Ideally yes — you'll learn exactly how YOUR car behaves, which is the knowledge you'll use all winter. Worried about it? Our winter-prepped fleet cars are included in any course at no extra charge.

Will this damage my car?

No — there's nothing to hit, and ice is gentler on cars than pavement. The most common casualty in nine years is dignity, briefly, during the first spin. It comes back stronger.

I have AWD and winter tires. Do I still need this?

Especially then. AWD accelerates beautifully on ice and stops exactly like everything else — a confidence mismatch that fills ditches every November. The Reality Check session shows you precisely where your setup's limits are.

When do sessions run?

Ice season is December through March, daily, with the lot at its best in deep winter. Book early for December — everyone remembers winter exists during the first storm, and those weeks sell out.

What does a session cost?

In line with other specialized winter programs — half-day skid school at the accessible end, full courses and fleet days scoped by group. Current pricing comes with your session dates, and teen certification has a family discount.
