Salt Lake Climbs at The Crux
I walked in for a 'first day free' on a whim, terrified and completely uncoordinated, and left obsessed. Two years later climbing is my whole life — I'm stronger than I've ever been, I've made my closest friends here, and I actually look forward to Mondays. The route-setting is world-class and the community pulls for you on every problem. The Crux changed my life, no exaggeration.
As a climber who's traveled the country, The Crux has some of the best route-setting I've found anywhere — fresh, creative problems every week that keep me projecting for months. The bouldering is deep, the rope walls are tall, and the training area is legit. But it's the community that makes it home. Best gym in Salt Lake, full stop.
My kids started in the youth program and now our whole family climbs together — it's the healthiest, happiest thing we do. The coaches are patient and brilliant, the space is spotless and welcoming, and there's genuinely something here for every age and level. Climbing built my kids' confidence in a way no other sport did. We're members for life.
I was intimidated to try climbing in my forties, sure I was too old and too weak. The intro class and the incredible staff proved me completely wrong. Climbing is a puzzle you solve with your whole body, and The Crux makes learning it welcoming and fun. I'm fitter, more confident, and part of the best community in the city. Just go try it.

Never Climbed? That's the Best Part.
Everyone who climbs here — every strong regular, every setter, every coach — started with a nervous, uncoordinated first day, absolutely certain they were too weak or too old or too uncoordinated to do it. Every single one of them was wrong, and so are you. Climbing is for every body, there is no prerequisite to start, and the beginner problems are genuinely fun and doable from your very first pull.
Your first day is completely free, with no pressure to join and no gear to buy — we'll set you up with rental shoes and, if you're new, a friendly staffer will show you the ropes (literally). Worst case, you get an incredibly fun workout and a story. Best case, you find your new favorite thing and the best community in Salt Lake. Whether you're chasing fitness, a puzzle for your brain, a family activity, or just something that makes movement feel like play, one day on the wall will hook you. Grab your free day and come find your edge.
- ✓First day free, gear provided

Frequently Asked Questions
I've never climbed. Can I just show up?
Absolutely — first-timers are our favorite people. Your free day pass gets you rental shoes and access to the bouldering (no ropes or experience needed), and if you want to rope climb, a quick belay class gets you going safely. Our staff will happily show you the basics, and the beginner problems are genuinely fun and doable from your very first pull. You don't need any experience, gear, or fitness to start — just closed-toe shoes and a willingness to have fun.
What's the difference between bouldering and rope climbing?
Bouldering is climbing shorter walls (around 15 feet) over thick padded floors, with no ropes or harness — you just climb, and if you fall, you land on the mats. It's the easiest way to start and needs zero gear beyond shoes. Rope climbing is on our tall 45-foot walls with a harness and rope, either top-rope or lead, and requires a quick safety class. Most people start with bouldering and add ropes when they're ready. We've got deep terrain for both.
What's included in the free day?
Everything you need to climb: a full day of access to the bouldering and fitness areas, rental climbing shoes, and a friendly intro from our staff if you're new. It's the real Crux experience with zero commitment and zero pressure to join. Just bring closed-toe shoes and a water bottle, and come pull on some plastic. If you love it — and most people do — we'll help you find a membership that fits.
Do you have programs for kids?
Yes, and they're some of the best in the state. We offer youth classes, after-school clubs, camps, and a competitive team that build strength, focus, problem-solving, and confidence through climbing. Our youth coaches are patient, experienced, and great with kids of all ages and abilities. Climbing is an incredible sport for building young people up — physically and mentally — and families tell us all the time it's the healthiest, happiest thing they do together.
Is there a long-term contract?
No. We keep memberships flexible with month-to-month options and day/punch passes — no year-long contracts and no fine-print fees. We'd rather earn your visit every week with world-class setting and a community you love than lock you in. After your free day we'll walk you through the options and help you find the one that fits how often you want to climb.
