The Smartest 45 Minutes in Boston
Cadence opened in 2019 on a simple premise: that the rowing machine is the most underrated piece of equipment in fitness, and that a studio built entirely around it could deliver the best full-body workout in the city. Six years and a thousand rowers later, we're convinced — and so is everyone who's found their cadence with us on Newbury Street.
Here's why rowing works: a single stroke engages roughly 86% of your muscles — legs, core, back, and arms — so you build strength and cardio at the same time, in one efficient motion. And because your feet never leave the machine, it's remarkably low-impact: a brutal workout that's genuinely gentle on your joints. What makes Cadence different is the coaching and the culture. Every class is led by a certified coach who dials in your stroke, programs real progression, and keeps the energy high, while the performance metrics on your screen turn every class into a game you can win against yourself. Whether you're a former collegiate rower or you've never touched an erg, you'll row at your own pace, on your own machine, coached the whole way. Come find your rhythm — your first class is on us.

One Motion, Every Benefit
The reasons rowing has become the smartest workout in fitness — and why Cadence is where Boston does it.
Low-Impact, High-Reward
A brutal cardio and strength workout with none of the joint pounding of running or jumping. Kind to your knees, hips, and back — for life.
Full-Body, Every Stroke
Legs, core, back, and arms all fire in a single stroke — about 86% of your muscles. Strength and cardio at once, in one efficient motion.
Real, Certified Coaching
Coaches who dial in your technique, program genuine progression, and keep the energy high — so every class is effective, not just exhausting.
Track Every Split
Live performance metrics on your screen turn each class into a game against yourself. See your pace, power, and progress in real numbers.
Efficient by Design
Forty-five minutes, full body, done. The most complete workout you can get in the least time — built for real, busy Boston schedules.
Paced to You
Everyone rows their own machine at their own resistance and pace, so a beginner and an athlete take the same class, each at their edge.
Coached, Paced & Tracked
Why our classes work for total beginners and former athletes alike.
We Teach the Stroke
Good rowing is a skill, and it's the foundation of everything. Our coaches break the stroke into simple, repeatable steps so you row efficiently and safely from your very first class.
We Pace It to You
You control your own resistance and pace on your own machine, so the same coached class challenges a first-timer and a former collegiate rower — each working at their own edge, never left behind.
We Track the Progress
Live metrics turn effort into numbers you can see and beat. Watch your splits drop and your power climb week over week — the proof that keeps you coming back.

Boston Finds Its Cadence
I have cranky knees and had written off high-intensity classes for good — until Cadence. Rowing is completely low-impact, so I get a brutal full-body cardio and strength workout without my joints paying for it the next day. The coaches make the technique click, the metrics on the screen keep me honest, and forty-five minutes flies by. Six months in I'm fitter than I was in my twenties, knees intact.
As a former college rower I'm picky about rowing technique, and Cadence is the real deal. The coaching is precise — proper stroke, real programming, actual attention to your form on the erg — and the Row + Strength classes are the best full-body workout in Boston. I leave every class wrecked in the best way, and the data-driven approach scratches my competitive itch. This is how indoor rowing should be done.
I was totally intimidated — I'd never touched a rowing machine and assumed I'd be hopeless. The Rowing 101 class fixed that in one session. The coach broke the stroke down so simply, and because everyone rows at their own pace on their own machine, I never felt behind. Now it's the workout I actually look forward to, and I've never been stronger or more consistent. Cadence made fitness click for me.
Forty-five minutes, full body, low impact, and genuinely fun — Cadence is the only workout that's ever stuck for me as a busy parent. The rhythm of the row is almost meditative, the coaches keep the energy high, and I can see my splits improving week over week. I've lost fifteen pounds and gained a community I love. It's the smartest hour I spend on myself all week.

The Machine Is Easier Than It Looks
The rowing machine can look intimidating from across a gym, but here's the truth: it's one of the most beginner-friendly pieces of equipment there is, and the stroke takes about five minutes to learn from a good coach. That's exactly what our Rowing 101 class is for — a welcoming, technique-first session that gets you rowing efficiently and confidently before you know it.
And because every rower is on their own machine at their own resistance and pace, there's no keeping up with the class and no being left behind — a first-timer and a former athlete take the very same class, each working at their own level. It's genuinely one of the most inclusive workouts in fitness: low-impact, all-levels, and coached every stroke. Your first class is completely free, so you can feel the full-body burn and the addictive rhythm with zero pressure and zero commitment. Worst case, you get a great low-impact workout. Best case, you find the smartest, most sustainable workout of your life — and a community to share it with. Come find your cadence.

Rowing Studio FAQs
I've never used a rowing machine. Is that a problem?
Not at all — most of our members had never rowed before their first class. Rowing is genuinely one of the easiest pieces of equipment to learn, and our Rowing 101 class is built to teach you the stroke from scratch in a single session. Because everyone rows their own machine at their own pace, you'll never feel behind. A coach sets you up and guides you the whole way — you'll be rowing confidently within minutes.
Is rowing really low-impact?
Yes — it's one of the biggest reasons people love it. Your feet stay strapped to the machine and there's no jarring or pounding, so you get an intense full-body cardio and strength workout without the joint stress of running, jumping, or heavy lifting. It's a favorite for people with cranky knees, hips, or backs who still want to train hard. Low-impact doesn't mean low-intensity — you'll work.
How does the free first class work?
New rowers get their first class completely free, with no commitment. Pick any class on the schedule — Rowing 101 or Signature Row are great starting points — and come try it. We'll set you up on a machine, teach you the stroke, and let you feel the full Cadence experience. There's no obligation to join afterward. Just fill out the form on this page and we'll get you booked in.
What should I bring and wear?
Just comfortable athletic clothes, sneakers, and a water bottle. Avoid very loose shorts (they can catch on the seat) — fitted or mid-length works best. We provide the machines and everything else. Arrive about ten minutes early for your first class so your coach can set up your machine and walk you through the basics. That's it — nothing to buy or know beforehand.
Will rowing give me a full-body workout?
Absolutely — that's rowing's superpower. A single stroke engages roughly 86% of your muscles: your legs drive, your core stabilizes, and your back and arms finish the pull. You build cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength at the same time, in one efficient motion. It's why 45 minutes on the rower delivers a more complete workout than most people get in an hour of anything else.
Is there a long-term contract?
No contracts. After your free class we keep it flexible with class packs and monthly memberships — row as often or as little as you like, with no year-long lock-in or fine print. We'd rather earn your visit each week with great coaching and a workout you love than trap you in a contract. We'll walk you through the options whenever you're ready.
Your First Class Is Free.
