Minimalist Interior Design in Portland, OR
Halden Studio designs calm, considered, light-filled spaces across Portland — built on restraint, natural materials, and everything left out. The luxury of less.

Everything We Leave Out
Halden Studio was founded on a quiet conviction: that the hardest and most valuable part of design is knowing what to leave out. For ten years we've created calm, considered, light-filled spaces across Portland and the Northwest — homes defined not by what fills them but by the room they give you to breathe. Our minimalism is warm, never cold. We work with honest, natural materials — light oak, wool, linen, stone, lime plaster — chosen for how they age and how they feel underfoot and underhand. We plan every sightline, edit relentlessly, and let daylight do the decorating. The result is a home that feels serene the moment you enter it and only deepens the longer you live there: uncluttered but never austere, spare but genuinely generous. Restraint, done with warmth and judgment, is its own quiet luxury.
- ✓Minimalism that stays warm, never cold

The Luxury of Less

How We Can Help
From a whole home pared to its essentials to a single room finally given room to breathe.

Restraint, Done With Warmth
What it means to have Halden Studio design your space.
The Discipline to Edit
The whole craft of minimalism is knowing what to remove. Ten years of practice give us that judgment.
Honest Materials Only
Light oak, wool, linen, stone, lime plaster — natural materials chosen for how they age and feel.
Daylight as Decoration
We plan around light. In a well-designed minimal room, the sun does most of the decorating.
Warm, Never Cold
Minimal doesn't mean austere. Our spaces are spare but deeply calm, serene, and lived-in.
Quietly Managed
We run the whole project with the same calm we design into it, so the process feels as serene as the result.
Timeless by Nature
Restraint doesn't date. Our spaces look as considered in ten years as the day they were finished.
From Cluttered to Calm
A quiet, considered process — the way designing for calm should feel.
Listen
We learn how you live and what you want to feel — and, just as importantly, what you're ready to let go of.
Edit & Plan
We plan the light, the flow, and the palette, and decide with discipline what stays and what goes.
Source & Build
We source the few honest materials and considered pieces, and coordinate every trade with quiet precision.
Reveal the Calm
We install and style with restraint, and hand back a home that feels like a deep, quiet exhale.
Three Principles We Design By
For a home that feels like a deep exhale, clients across the Northwest trust Halden Studio.
Subtract, Then Subtract Again
We design by removal. The calm of a space comes from everything we had the discipline to leave out.
Materials Do the Work
With so little in a room, what remains has to be honest and beautiful. We choose natural materials that earn the quiet.
Warmth Is the Whole Point
Cold minimalism is easy and joyless. Ours is spare but warm — serene, human, and made to be lived in.

When You Remove Everything, the Rest Must Be Perfect
There is nowhere to hide in a minimal room. When you strip a space back to almost nothing, every material, every joint, every fall of light has to be exactly right — because there is nothing else to look at. That is the demanding, invisible discipline behind the calm, and it is the heart of our craft. We choose materials for how they age and how they feel: the grain of light oak, the honesty of lime plaster, the weight of a wool throw, the cool of a single slab of stone. We plan for the way the sun crosses a room across the day, so daylight becomes the changing decoration a spare space needs. Nothing is there to fill a gap; everything is there because it earns its silence. Get those few things right, and the result is a home that feels effortless and serene — and reveals its quiet depth the longer you live in it.
- ✓Every material chosen for how it ages and feels
- ✓Daylight planned as the changing decoration
- ✓Nothing to fill a gap — everything earns its place
- ✓Effortless from afar, deep the longer you look
Words From Our Clients
We came to Halden Studio exhausted by our own clutter and wanting a home that finally felt calm. What they gave us is hard to put into words — a space so quiet and considered that we breathe differently in it. Every material is honest, every sightline is intentional, and there is nothing in the house that doesn't need to be there. It is the most peaceful place we've ever lived. Restraint, it turns out, is a luxury.
Minimalism is easy to do coldly and very hard to do warmly, and Halden Studio does it warmly. Our home is spare, but it's not austere — natural wood, soft light, honest materials, and a deep sense of calm. They edited our life down to what matters and made the result feel generous rather than empty. Ten years of restraint and taste are evident everywhere.
What Halden Studio understands is that the hardest part of minimalism is knowing what to leave out — and they have that judgment in abundance. Our home is serene, light-filled, and utterly uncluttered, yet it feels warm and lived-in rather than like a gallery. Two years on, it still feels like a deep exhale every time we walk through the door.
Interior Design Questions, Answered
Isn't minimalism cold and uncomfortable to live in?
Done badly, it can be — and that's exactly what we're hired to avoid. Our minimalism is warm: natural materials, soft light, honest textures, and spaces designed around how you actually live. The goal is calm, not emptiness. Our clients consistently tell us their homes feel more comfortable and more restful than any cluttered space ever did. Restraint, done with warmth, is deeply livable.
Do I have to get rid of everything I own?
No — though part of our value is helping you decide, with kindness, what genuinely earns its place. Minimalism isn't about deprivation; it's about keeping what matters and letting the rest go so the things you love can breathe. We guide that editing process gently, and we're careful never to strip away the pieces and memories that make a home feel like yours.
What does full-service design include?
Everything from the first conversation to the final, quiet styling: space planning and editing, material and palette selection, furniture curation, trade coordination, and installation. With minimalism, the editing and the material choices carry enormous weight, so we give them particular care. You get one calm studio holding the whole vision, managed end to end.
How is your pricing structured?
After an initial consultation we provide a clear proposal with a flat design fee based on scope, plus transparent tracking of all material and furnishing costs in your budget. For smaller needs we offer hourly consultation. Minimalism often means fewer, better things rather than more — we talk numbers openly from the start, with no surprises.
Does a minimalist renovation cost less because it's 'simpler'?
Not necessarily — and it's worth being honest about that. A spare space hides nothing, so the materials and craftsmanship have to be excellent, and getting clean lines and perfect finishes right takes skill. We invest the budget where it shows: in honest materials, quality construction, and the few considered pieces that a minimal room lives by. It's fewer things, done properly.
Do you work outside Portland?
Portland and the Northwest are our home — the Pearl to Sellwood to Lake Oswego — but we take on select projects further afield for the right fit. If you love our work and you're within reach of the region, reach out; we'd be glad to talk.
