From first nursery to big-kid room — magical for them, smart for you.
Nursery, big-kid room, or playroom? Tell us about your little one.

Magical for Kids. Smart for Parents.
Most kids' rooms go wrong in one of two directions. They're either a primary-colored, character-branded explosion that thrills a three-year-old and gives everyone else a headache — and that the child outgrows in eighteen months — or they're a tasteful, grown-up space that photographs beautifully and holds no magic for the kid who actually lives there. Fawn & Fable was founded to refuse that trade-off. For eight years, nurseries and kids' rooms are the only thing we've designed, and we've gotten very good at the specific, delightful puzzle of making a room that's genuinely magical for a child and genuinely smart for a parent, at the same time. Magical means imagination — soft, storybook, wonder-filled spaces a kid can't wait to be in, with room to play and dream and grow. Smart means everything a tired parent actually needs — a layout that works for real family life, hidden storage for the relentless tide of stuff, durable and washable materials, and choices that grow with the child instead of expiring at the next birthday. We sweat the safety details, the nap-time blackout, the toy that has a home, the piece that transitions from crib to big-kid bed. And we wrap it all in a look that's calm, characterful, and beautiful enough that you're happy to have it in your home. The result is a room the kids are obsessed with and the parents secretly love even more — which, after five hundred of them across San Diego, is exactly the point.

Three Things We Believe About Kids' Rooms
For rooms kids adore and parents love, San Diego families trust Fawn & Fable.
Wonder Is Worth It
A magical room shapes a childhood. Imagination and delight aren't extras — for a kid, they're the whole point.
Parents Live Here Too
A kids' room is part of your home. It should be calm, smart, and beautiful enough that you love it as well.
Design It to Grow
Kids change fast. The best room evolves with them, so a nursery becomes a big-kid room without starting over.

A Kid's Room Is the Whole World for a While
For a little one, a bedroom isn't just a place to sleep — for a few precious years it's the entire universe. It's where they wake up and where they're tucked in, where they play out epic imaginary adventures, where they retreat when the world is too big, where reading and dreaming and growing up quietly happen. A room that's magical and safe and truly theirs isn't a luxury or a design indulgence; it's part of the scaffolding of a happy childhood, and kids feel the difference deeply even if they can't articulate it. That's why we take these small rooms so seriously. We design for the child's imagination and sense of wonder, because that's what the room is for from their point of view. But we design just as hard for the practical truths parents live with — the safety, the storage, the durability, the sleep, the way it all has to work at 3 a.m. and survive a toddler and grow into the next stage without a full redo. Getting both at once is genuinely hard, which is exactly why it's worth handing to someone who does only this. The reward is a room where a childhood gets to unfold beautifully, that also makes your daily life easier instead of harder. For the few short years it's their whole world, we think that's worth designing with real care.
- ✓For kids, the bedroom is the whole world
- ✓A magical room is part of a happy childhood
- ✓Designed for wonder AND for real parent life
- ✓Made to grow through every stage
Rooms Kids Adore, Parents Love
Fawn & Fable designed our daughter's nursery and I genuinely tear up every time I walk in. It's whimsical and magical without being cutesy or juvenile — the kind of soft, dreamy, storybook room I always imagined but could never pull together. And it's smart: tons of hidden storage, a layout that works for real newborn life, and pieces that will grow with her. They thought of everything a sleep-deprived parent wouldn't. Worth every penny to give her a room this special.
Our two boys share a room and it was chaos. Fawn & Fable turned it into a bunk-room adventure they're obsessed with — each has his own little zone, there's a place for every single toy, and it's still calm and good-looking, not a primary-colored explosion. Homework happens, sleep happens, and they actually keep it tidier because everything has a home. They somehow made a shared kids' room that thrills the boys AND the parents. Magic.
We hired Fawn & Fable for a playroom and a big-kid room transition, and they nailed both. The playroom is imaginative and joyful but organized enough that cleanup is actually possible, and our daughter's new room grew up beautifully from her nursery without losing the magic. They design for how kids actually play and live, not just for a photo — though the photos are stunning too. Endlessly patient, wildly creative, and worth every cent. Our whole family adores them.
Kids' Room Design Questions, Answered
Won't a designed kids' room be outgrown in a year?
Not the way we do it — designing for growth is central to how we work. We avoid trend-chasing and hyper-specific character themes that expire, and instead build rooms on a foundation that lasts: a smart layout, quality pieces that transition from crib to big-kid bed, and a palette and style that grow with your child. The magical, of-the-moment touches are the easy, inexpensive things to refresh, while the bones of the room stay right for years. Many of our families come back to gently evolve a room through each stage rather than start over, which is exactly what we design for.
Can a kids' room be magical AND actually organized?
Yes — and honestly that's the whole art of it. The magic and the order aren't in tension; they depend on each other. A room buried in clutter never feels magical, no matter how cute the wallpaper. So we build in serious, often hidden storage that gives every toy, book, and treasure a home, which keeps the room calm and lets the wonder shine. We design cleanup to be genuinely doable — bins kids can reach, systems that make sense to a small person — so the room stays lovely between visits. Magical and organized isn't a compromise; it's the goal.
Do you design for safety?
Always, and it's non-negotiable. We anchor furniture to walls, specify non-toxic and low-VOC finishes, choose age-appropriate pieces with rounded edges, follow safe-sleep guidance for nurseries, keep cords and hazards out of reach, and think through the specific risks of your child's age and stage. Safety is woven into every layout and product decision from the start, not checked at the end. You get a room that's beautiful and imaginative and that also gives you real peace of mind — which, as any parent knows, is a huge part of what makes a child's room feel truly right.
What does the nursery-to-big-kid transition involve?
It's one of our favorite services. Rather than tearing out a beloved nursery and starting from scratch, we evolve it — swapping the crib for a big-kid bed, updating the palette and pieces to suit an older child's personality and needs, adding function for school, hobbies, and friends, all while keeping the elements your family loves and the sense of magic intact. It's gentler on your budget and on your child, who gets to grow into a room that still feels like home rather than being handed a brand-new, unfamiliar space. We plan many nurseries with this future transition already in mind.
How does pricing work?
Every room and family is different, so after an initial chat about your child, your space, and your wish list, we send a clear proposal — typically a design fee based on scope, plus transparent furniture and décor budgets you approve before we buy anything. We're skilled at creating something magical at a range of budgets and completely candid about costs from the first conversation. Because we design rooms to grow rather than expire, most parents find the investment goes a lot further than a room they'd be redoing in a year, and there are never surprises along the way.
What parts of San Diego do you serve?
All of it — our studio is in North Park, and we design nurseries and kids' rooms throughout San Diego, from La Jolla and Encinitas to Coronado, Carlsbad, and Point Loma. San Diego is a wonderful place to raise a family and we love being the designers local parents turn to for their little ones' spaces. For larger projects a bit further afield in Southern California, we're glad to travel. Wherever you are, if you want a room your child will adore and you'll love too, we'd be delighted to help.
