The Best Room in the House Doesn't Have Walls
In a climate like Santa Barbara's, the most valuable square footage of a home is often the part with no roof over it — and it's almost always the most neglected. People pour love and budget into their interiors and then treat the outdoors as an afterthought: a slab, a grill, a set of furniture that bakes in the sun and blows over in the wind. It's a waste of the thing that makes living here special. Verandah & Grove exists to reclaim it. For twelve years, outdoor living is the only thing we've designed, and we bring the full discipline of interior design to the spaces beyond your walls. We think about an outdoor living room the way a great designer thinks about a family room — flow, comfort, materials, light, and the way people actually gather — just built to thrive in sun, wind, and salt air. We compose true rooms out there: living rooms around a fire, kitchens you genuinely cook in, dining terraces that seat the whole family, poolside lounges that feel like a resort. We choose materials that look high-end and shrug off the elements, we plan shade and sun and privacy with real care, and we make the transition from indoors to out feel seamless. The result is that the outdoors stops being the leftover space and becomes what our clients tell us, again and again, is the best room in the house — the one they actually live in. In this climate, that's not a luxury. It's the whole point of being here.

Three Things We Believe About Outdoors
For outdoor rooms that become the best in the house, Santa Barbara trusts Verandah & Grove.
Outside Is a Room
We design the outdoors as living space, not landscaping — with the flow, comfort, and craft of any great interior.
The Climate Is the Gift
Here, the weather is an asset most people waste. A well-designed outdoor room turns it into your favorite space.
It Has to Endure
Beautiful isn't enough outdoors. Everything we choose has to look gorgeous and survive the sun, wind, and years.

You Bought the Climate. Live in It.
People move to Santa Barbara, or pay a premium to stay, largely for one thing: the way you can live outside here nearly every day of the year. And then, oddly, most homes are built to keep that gift at arm's length — the good living happens indoors, and the outside is a view you glance at through glass rather than a place you inhabit. It's a quiet tragedy of the well-designed home: the single greatest luxury of the location, left on the table. Designing the outdoors as real, livable rooms flips that completely. Suddenly the morning coffee, the long lunch, the evening by the fire, the summer of hosting friends all happen out in the light and the air, in spaces that are as comfortable and beautiful as anything inside. The home effectively grows — you gain rooms you didn't have, the best-feeling ones you own — without moving a single interior wall. And in this climate those rooms aren't seasonal; with the right shade, fire, and materials they work almost year-round. That's why we treat outdoor living not as a landscaping add-on but as some of the highest-value design work a home here can receive. You already paid for the climate in the price of being here. The least the house can do is let you actually live in it, and that's exactly what we build.
- ✓The climate is why you're here — inhabit it
- ✓Outdoor rooms grow the home without a remodel
- ✓As comfortable and beautiful as any interior
- ✓With shade and fire, usable nearly year-round
The Best Room in the House
Verandah & Grove designed the outdoor living space for our Montecito home and it has genuinely become the best room in the house — we live out there. They created a true outdoor living room, a dining terrace, and a fire lounge that flow together beautifully and feel as considered and comfortable as anything indoors. They understand our climate and how we actually entertain, and every material has held up gorgeously to the sun and salt air. It transformed how we use our home. Worth every penny and then some.
We wanted a real outdoor kitchen and dining space, not just a grill on a slab, and Verandah & Grove delivered something spectacular. It's a proper kitchen we cook and host in constantly, shaded perfectly, with a table that seats our whole extended family. The design makes the most of the view and the light, and it's durable and low-maintenance despite looking high-end. Our summers revolve around that space now. They are true masters of outdoor living and completely worth it.
Verandah & Grove reimagined our poolside and cabana area on the Riviera and it feels like a five-star resort we never have to leave. Loungy, elegant, shaded in all the right places, and styled down to the last detail — but also practical for real family pool days. They think about flow, sun, privacy, and comfort the way a great interior designer thinks about a living room, just outdoors. It's stunning and we're obsessed. The whole process was a pleasure from start to finish.

Outdoor Living Design Questions, Answered
How is outdoor living design different from landscaping?
Landscaping is largely about plants and the ground plane; outdoor living design is about creating rooms. We bring the full discipline of interior design to the spaces beyond your walls — thinking about flow, comfort, materials, light, shade, and how people actually gather, and composing true living rooms, kitchens, dining spaces, and lounges outdoors. We work happily alongside landscape architects and gardeners, but our focus is the livability and design of the space: the furniture, the fire, the shade structures, the outdoor kitchen, the styling, and the seamless connection to your home. The result feels less like a garden and more like the best rooms in your house, with no roof.
Can outdoor spaces really be as comfortable as indoor rooms?
Absolutely, and that's exactly the standard we design to. The difference is planning for the elements from the start: performance fabrics and materials that are genuinely comfortable and beautiful yet built for sun and weather, shade structures and fire features that extend the usable hours, layouts that account for wind and privacy, and lighting that makes evenings magical. Done right, an outdoor living room is every bit as inviting as its indoor counterpart — often more so, because you're in the fresh air and the light. Our clients routinely tell us the outdoor rooms became the spaces they use most, precisely because they're as comfortable as anything inside.
Do you design outdoor kitchens and dining areas?
Yes, and it's some of our favorite work. A real outdoor kitchen is far more than a grill on a slab — we design proper cooking and hosting spaces with the work surfaces, storage, appliances, seating, shade, and flow you'd expect from a serious kitchen, tailored to how you actually cook and entertain. Paired with a dining terrace sized for your table and your gatherings, it becomes the natural heart of outdoor life, especially in our climate. We handle the full design and coordinate the build, so you end up with an outdoor kitchen and dining room you'll use constantly, not an underwhelming setup you tolerate.
Will everything hold up to the sun and salt air?
It has to, and it's central to how we work. Designing for a coastal California climate means specifying materials and furnishings that look high-end and are engineered to endure — fade- and weather-resistant fabrics, appropriate woods and stones and metals, and finishes chosen for longevity in sun, moisture, and salt air. We won't put something beautiful outside that we know will look tired in a season; durability and beauty are equal requirements in every choice. The payoff is an outdoor space that still looks gorgeous years down the line, with sensible, low-maintenance upkeep rather than constant replacement.
How much does an outdoor living project cost?
It varies widely with scope — a styled terrace is a very different project from a full outdoor living room, kitchen, and poolside build. After an initial conversation and a look at your space, we provide a clear proposal with a design fee and transparent budgets for furnishings and any construction, all approved before work begins. We design to a range of budgets and are candid about numbers from the first meeting. It's worth remembering the value: a well-designed outdoor space effectively adds the most-used rooms to your home and makes the most of the climate you're paying to live in, which is among the highest-return design work a home here can receive.
What areas do you serve?
We're based on State Street and design outdoor living spaces throughout the Santa Barbara area — Montecito, Hope Ranch, the Riviera, the Mesa, Summerland, and Carpinteria are all regular territory. This stretch of coast is practically built for outdoor living, which is why we've focused our whole practice here. For larger projects a bit further along the coast, we're glad to travel. If you've got a patio, a poolside, or a whole neglected yard and you want it to become the best room in your house, wherever you are in the area, we'd love to talk.
