Real wood, natural stone, linen, living plants, and vintage pieces with history give a home a depth and soul that mass-produced goods can't. You get a calm, refined, stunning interior that also happens to be healthy and low-impact. Nobody walks into a Alder & Ash home and thinks 'eco' — they think it's the most beautiful, restful place they've been.

It means choosing every material with your indoor air and wellbeing in mind. We specify low- and zero-VOC paints and finishes that don't off-gas, natural and solid materials over synthetics that release chemicals, and furnishings free of the worst flame retardants and formaldehyde-based glues. We also design for daylight, ventilation, and greenery, because air quality and light are as much a part of a healthy home as the surfaces. The result is a space that not only looks beautiful but is measurably better to breathe in and live in, which matters a great deal given how much of our lives we spend indoors.

Plants are part of it, but it's much deeper than a few pots on a shelf. Biophilic design is about weaving a genuine connection to the natural world through the whole home — abundant natural light, organic materials and textures, colors drawn from the surrounding landscape, sightlines to the outdoors, natural forms and patterns, and yes, thoughtfully integrated living plants. Constantly, and it's some of our favorite work. Reclaimed wood, salvaged fixtures, antique and vintage furniture, and materials with a past give a home warmth, character, and a story you simply cannot buy new — and they're among the greenest choices available, keeping usable material out of landfills and avoiding the carbon of new production. We have the sourcing relationships to find beautiful salvaged pieces and the design skill to weave them into a clean, cohesive, modern interior, so your home feels collected and soulful rather than either brand-new or like a thrift store.

It's usually comparable, and often a better long-term value. Some healthy or reclaimed materials cost a bit more up front, but many natural materials are competitively priced, reclaimed pieces can be very affordable, and durable natural materials outlast cheap synthetics that need replacing. More importantly, we design to your budget either way and are candid about costs from the first conversation. The health and quality-of-life benefits of a non-toxic, light-filled, nature-connected home are real and ongoing, and most clients find that designing this way costs about the same as a conventional project while delivering far more.

We're based on Pearl Street in Boulder and work throughout Boulder and the Front Range — Newlands, Chautauqua, North Boulder, Table Mesa, and out to Louisville and beyond are regular territory for us.
