The International Society of Arboriculture certifies arborists who've proven, through experience and a rigorous exam, that they understand the science of tree care — biology, structure, diagnosis, and proper pruning. It means the person assessing your trees knows how to read a tree's health and structure, can save trees that untrained crews would remove, and prunes in ways that protect a tree rather than harm it. Do I really need to prune a healthy tree?
Often, yes — but rarely as much as people think. Good structural pruning while a tree is young prevents the weak unions and crossing limbs that become hazards later, and selective pruning on a mature tree improves its health, safety, and form. But over-pruning ('topping,' especially) badly damages trees and is one of the most common mistakes we're called in to fix. A certified arborist prunes only what benefits the tree — which is sometimes very little. We'll always tell you honestly if a tree is best left alone.
