A Studio, Not a Style

The finest gardens don't announce their designer — they feel like they belong exactly where they are. That belief is the whole of Atelier Verde. We are a design studio, not a house style: we begin every project by understanding the place — its light, its grade, the ocean air, the way you want to move and gather outdoors — and only then compose a landscape that answers it. For nineteen years we've worked along the Santa Barbara coast, from Montecito estates to Hope Ranch gardens, designing masterplans, planting, hardscape, and light as one coherent whole, and staying through the build to protect the design. Our work is drought-smart and Mediterranean by climate, restrained by temperament, and considered down to the last sightline. The result is never fashionable and never dated — just a garden that feels, quietly, exactly right.

  • We design for the place, not a signature look
  • Masterplan, planting, structure & light as one
  • Drought-smart Mediterranean sensibility

The Approach

How a Considered Garden Comes to Be

We Read the Place First

Before a line is drawn, we study the site through the seasons — sun, wind, grade, views, and how you live. The design grows from the place, not from a template.

We Compose as a Whole

Planting, hardscape, water, and light are designed together, never bolted on. That coherence is what makes a garden feel inevitable rather than assembled.

We Stay Through the Build

A drawing is only a promise. We oversee construction and protect every detail, so the garden that gets built is the one that was designed.

The Difference

Design That Ages Into Itself

Place, Not Signature

We don't impose a look. Each garden answers its own site and owner, which is why our work never feels dated or formulaic.

Architectural Rigor

We think in structure, proportion, and sightline — designing the bones of a landscape with an architect's discipline.

Drought-Smart Planting

Mediterranean, climate-appropriate planting that thrives on the coast with less water and looks better with every year.

Oversight to the Detail

We remain through construction, coordinating trades and protecting the design so the finished garden is faithful to the vision.

The Engagement

From Conversation to Composed Garden

1

Conversation

We meet at your property, understand your vision and how you live, and discuss the scope of the design.

2

Concept & Master Plan

We study the site and compose a master plan — the coherent vision for your whole landscape.

3

Design Development

Planting, hardscape, water, and lighting are detailed into a complete, buildable design.

4

Oversight & Realization

We coordinate the build with your contractors, protecting the design through to the finished garden.

A Garden Designed Is a Home Completed

A house ends at its walls; a home extends into the land around it. The gardens that make a property feel whole are never accidental — they're composed, the way a fine room is composed, with proportion, sequence, light, and restraint. That is what a design studio brings that a landscaper cannot: not just plants installed, but a landscape considered as a single work, resolved before the first shovel and protected through the last. At Atelier Verde we design for permanence and for the way gardens deepen over decades — choosing plants that will mature into the composition, structures that will weather beautifully, and lighting that will still feel right in twenty years. To design a garden with this much care is to complete the home it belongs to. On the Santa Barbara coast, that is the work we've devoted nineteen years to doing exactly right.

  • A landscape composed as one work
  • Resolved on paper before it's built
  • Designed to mature over decades
  • The garden that completes the home

Considerations

Questions About the Studio

Do you build the gardens you design?

We are primarily a design studio, and design is where our value lives — but we don't hand you a drawing and disappear. We provide full design oversight through construction, coordinating your contractors (or ones we recommend) and protecting every detail so the garden that gets built is faithful to the design. For many clients that oversight is as important as the plan itself.

What does a master landscape plan include?

A master plan is the considered vision for your entire property — circulation, grading, structures, planting concept, lighting, water, and phasing. It lets you build a coherent garden over time, one phase at a time, with confidence that each part serves a unified whole rather than a series of disconnected projects.

Is your work drought-appropriate?

Yes — it's fundamental to designing well on the California coast. We compose with Mediterranean and climate-appropriate planting that thrives on far less water, and design irrigation and hydrozoning intelligently. Beautiful and water-wise are not in tension here; the coast's finest gardens are both.

How do we begin, and how long does it take?

It begins with a conversation at your property. Good design is unhurried — we study a site through its conditions before we compose, so a master plan typically takes several weeks to a few months depending on scope. We take on a limited number of projects each year to give each one the attention it deserves.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes — Atelier Verde holds a California C-27 landscape contractor's license (#1029847) and is fully insured. Considered landscape design and oversight benefit from that professional standing, particularly when coordinating structures, grading, and trades through a build.
