Gardens Made to Bloom for Years — Garden Design & Planting in Asheville, NC
A planting studio for the Blue Ridge. Fernrow designs layered, four-season gardens — perennials, natives, and pollinator plantings chosen for your light and soil — that get more beautiful every year.

A Planting Studio, Not a Mow-and-Blow Crew
There's a world of difference between a landscaper who installs shrubs and a gardener who composes a garden — and Fernrow is firmly the second. We're a design and planting studio, and plants are our craft. For fourteen years we've made gardens across Asheville and the Blue Ridge that bloom in waves from earliest spring to hard frost: hellebores and bulbs, then peonies and salvias, then coneflowers, grasses, and asters, layered by height, texture, and season so there's always something coming into its moment. We choose every plant for your specific light, your mountain clay, and the pollinators we want to feed, and we arrange them the way a painter arranges color — for depth, movement, and the quiet surprises that make a garden feel alive. A Fernrow garden isn't finished the day we plant it; that's the day it begins. It fills in, matures, and deepens for years, rewarding you with more beauty and more butterflies every single season.

Blue Ridge Gardens in Bloom

What Makes a Garden, Not Just a Planting
We Plant for the Whole Year
A garden that only looks good in May is half a garden. We layer plants so something is always coming into bloom — early bulbs, summer perennials, fall grasses and asters, winter structure — and there's beauty in every season.
Right Plant, Right Place
We choose every plant for your actual conditions — the light, the mountain clay, the moisture, the exposure. Plants suited to their spot thrive with less fuss and look right, instead of struggling in a place they were never meant to be.
Designed to Deepen With Time
We plant for the garden it will become, not just the day it goes in. Perennials fill in, self-sow, and mature; the composition settles and deepens. A Fernrow garden is more beautiful in year three than year one — by design.
Gardeners, Not Just Installers
We Actually Know Plants
Deep, working knowledge of perennials, natives, and how they behave over years and seasons — the foundation of a garden that thrives, not just survives.
Pollinator-First
We design to feed bees, butterflies, and birds, weaving native and nectar plants through every garden so it hums with life all season.
A Designer's Eye
We compose with color, texture, height, and movement the way a painter composes — so the garden reads as one intentional, living picture.
Registered & Insured
A registered North Carolina landscape contractor, fully insured, bringing craft and accountability to every garden we plant.

Asheville Gardeners on Fernrow
Fernrow designed a perennial garden for our Montford home that has completely changed how we live. It blooms in waves from March to October — hellebores, then peonies, then coneflowers and asters — and it's alive with bees and butterflies all summer. They chose plants for our exact light and clay soil, layered them for height and season, and it just gets more beautiful every year. This isn't landscaping; it's gardening as an art. We can't stop sitting outside.
We asked Fernrow to renovate an overgrown, tired garden and they brought it back to life beautifully. They kept the good bones, edited hard, and replanted with natives and cottage-garden perennials that suit the mountains. It's lush, layered, and low-fuss, and the pollinators found it within a week. Thoughtful, knowledgeable, and clearly in love with plants.
Our garden is the envy of the street thanks to Fernrow. They designed layered beds that give us color and interest in every season, chose plants that thrive in our conditions, and set it all up to be manageable. Working with people who genuinely know and love plants makes all the difference. Every dollar was worth it.

A Garden Is the One Investment That Grows
Most things you buy for your home start their slow decline the moment they're installed. A garden is the rare exception — it's the one investment that literally grows, deepening in beauty and value with every passing year. A well-designed perennial garden that costs the same as a piece of furniture will, a decade on, be an established, layered, wildlife-filled landscape that no money could buy off the shelf — because it took ten years of growing to become itself. That's the quiet magic of gardening as opposed to landscaping: you're not decorating a space, you're beginning a living thing that rewards you for years. Fernrow designs for exactly that long arc — choosing plants that will mature gracefully, arranging them to fill in and knit together, and setting your garden on a path to get lovelier and more alive the longer you have it. Plant a garden well, and you've given yourself a gift that keeps unwrapping itself, season after season, for as long as you tend it.

Garden Design FAQs
What's the difference between a garden designer and a landscaper?
A landscaper typically installs hardscape and a standard palette of shrubs; a garden designer composes a living, changing planting — choosing and arranging perennials, natives, and seasonal plants for bloom, texture, and wildlife over the whole year. Fernrow is a planting studio: plants and how they grow together over time are our craft. The result is a garden that changes and deepens, not a static landscape.
Will my garden bloom all year?
That's exactly what we design for. We layer plants so something is always coming into its moment — early bulbs and hellebores, late-spring peonies and iris, summer coneflowers and salvias, fall grasses and asters, and winter structure and seedheads. Instead of one big flush and then nothing, you get waves of bloom and interest across all four seasons.
Do you use native and pollinator plants?
Yes — they're central to how we garden. We weave regionally native and nectar-rich plants through every design to feed bees, butterflies, and birds, and because natives are beautifully adapted to our Blue Ridge conditions. A Fernrow garden is designed to be alive with pollinators, not just pretty to look at.
Can you renovate an existing, overgrown garden?
Absolutely — garden renovation is some of our favorite work. We assess what's worth keeping, edit hard, improve the soil, and replant with a layered, well-suited palette. Often there are good bones hiding under years of overgrowth, and bringing a tired garden back to life is deeply rewarding — and usually faster than starting from scratch.
Are you registered and insured?
Yes — Fernrow is a registered North Carolina landscape contractor (#L-8841) and fully insured. Garden design and planting done with real horticultural knowledge, accountability, and care is exactly what turns a yard into a garden that thrives for years.
