For eleven years we've designed and planted gardens across Madison and the surrounding towns that bloom in waves from spring ephemerals to fall asters, that hum with bees, butterflies, and birds all season, and that thrive on rainfall alone, with no chemicals and almost no upkeep. We know the regional palette intimately — coneflowers and bee balm, milkweed and blazing star, little bluestem and big bluestem — and we arrange it with a designer's eye, so a Wildroot garden reads as intentional and gorgeous, never weedy. Wildroot converted our thirsty, boring lawn into a native garden that is alive in a way I didn't know a yard could be. From spring ephemerals to summer coneflowers and bee balm to fall asters and grasses, something is always blooming, and it hums with bees, butterflies, and birds from April to October. It needs almost no water and no chemicals, and it looks intentional and beautiful, not weedy. They clearly know the regional native palette cold and design like artists. Our yard finally feels like it belongs in Wisconsin.
We asked Wildroot to design a pollinator garden and rain garden for our Madison home and the result is stunning and functional. The rain garden handles our runoff beautifully, the pollinator beds are covered in butterflies all summer, and it's all native and low-maintenance. They educated us the whole way and clearly love these plants. It's the best-looking and most alive yard on the block.

Won't a native garden just look weedy?
Not when it's designed — that's the whole difference between a native garden and a neglected one. We compose native plants with a designer's eye for color, height, texture, and season, and we include structure, defined edges, and repetition so the garden reads as intentional and beautiful. A designed native garden is stunning and clearly cared-for; the 'weedy' look comes from planting natives without design, which is exactly what we don't do.
Is a native garden really low-maintenance?
Yes — dramatically so, once established. Native plants are adapted to Wisconsin's climate and soil, so they thrive on rainfall alone, need no fertilizer or chemicals, and don't require mowing. There's some seasonal cutting-back and light weeding, especially in the first year or two while they establish, but compared to a lawn — with its constant mowing, watering, and feeding — a native garden is far less work and gets easier every year.
Will it actually attract pollinators and birds?
Remarkably fast, and it's one of the most rewarding parts. Because native plants co-evolved with our local bees, butterflies, and birds, a native garden becomes a magnet for them — often within the first season.
