Why do retaining walls fail?
Almost always for the same reasons: no proper footing, no drainage, and no reinforcement. A wall holds back tons of soil and water, and water pressure behind it is what pushes it over. Walls built without a compacted footing, gravel-and-pipe drainage, and geogrid reinforcement on taller walls will lean, bulge, and fail — usually within a few years. We build all three into every wall, which is why ours hold.
Do I need drainage behind my wall?
Yes — it's not optional, it's the single most important part. Every retaining wall traps water in the soil behind it, and that water creates enormous pressure. Gravel backfill and a drainage pipe relieve that pressure and carry the water away. A wall without drainage is a wall on borrowed time, no matter how good the blocks look. We engineer drainage into every wall we build.
Can you fix a wall that's already leaning or failing?
Yes — replacing and rebuilding failing walls is a big part of what we do. We assess why it failed (usually footing or drainage), remove it, and build a proper engineered wall in its place with the footing, drainage, and reinforcement it should have had. It's worth addressing sooner rather than later, because a failing wall only gets more expensive as it takes more with it.
Will a retaining wall give me more usable yard?
Often dramatically so — it's one of the best reasons to build one. A steep slope is essentially wasted space; a retaining wall (or a series of terraces) turns that grade into flat, usable ground for a lawn, patio, garden, or play area.
