Northwest Gardens, Brought to Life With Water

Seattle's Pond & Water Garden Studio
There is nothing a garden can have that transforms it like moving water. The sound alone changes everything — it softens the city, draws you outside, and turns a backyard into a place of genuine calm. Stillwater exists to build that, beautifully. We're a design-build water garden studio, and moving water and natural stone are our craft. For fifteen years we've built koi ponds, waterfalls, streams, and pondless features across Seattle and the Eastside that look like they were carved from a Cascade creek, not dropped from a kit. We design each one to fit its garden — the grade, the sightlines, the way you'll live around it — and we build the parts that matter: the biology that keeps the water clear and the koi healthy, the rockwork that looks natural rather than staged, and the hidden mechanics that make it run clean and quiet for decades. A Stillwater water feature isn't a pond liner and a pump; it's a living, moving piece of the Northwest brought into your garden — the heart of the home, the thing everyone gathers around, and the sound you'll be grateful for every single day.

Why a Built Pond Beats a Kit
Ecosystem, Not Just a Liner
A kit pond is a liner, a pump, and a maintenance nightmare of green water. A properly built ecosystem pond uses biology — plants, beneficial bacteria, and the right balance — to keep itself clear and healthy with a fraction of the effort. The difference is night and day, and it's all in the design.
Stone Placed Like a Creek
The reason most backyard waterfalls look fake is the rockwork. We study how water and stone actually behave in a mountain stream and build that way — so the water moves naturally and the stone looks like it grew there, not like it was stacked by a crew in an afternoon.
Built for Decades of Quiet
The mechanics you never see — the plumbing runs, the hidden reservoir, the right-sized pump — are what separate a feature that runs clean and silent for twenty years from one that clogs, leaks, and hums. We over-build the parts that matter so you only ever notice the beauty.

Seattle Gardeners on Stillwater
Stillwater built us a koi pond and waterfall that has completely changed our backyard — and our lives, honestly. The sound of the water is the first thing we hear in the morning and the last thing at night, the koi are a daily joy, and the whole thing looks like it was carved out of a mountain stream. They designed it to fit the garden perfectly, built it to run clean and quiet, and taught us how to care for it. It's become the heart of our home, the place everyone gathers. A Stillwater pond is a different thing entirely from a kit — it's a living work of art.
We wanted the sound of water but not the maintenance of a full pond, so Stillwater built us a pondless waterfall and stream through the garden. It's magical — the water disappears into a hidden reservoir and recirculates, so it's all the beauty and sound with almost no upkeep. It looks completely natural, like it's always been there. Thoughtful design, flawless build, true artisans of water and stone.
Stillwater designed a water garden with a stream, a small waterfall, and beautiful marginal plantings for our Seattle backyard, and it's the most peaceful place I've ever owned. It draws birds and dragonflies, the planting has filled in gorgeously, and the sound is pure serenity. They clearly love this craft and know it deeply. Worth every penny for the daily calm it brings.

The One Thing That Makes a Garden Peaceful
You can have the most beautiful planting in the world and still have a garden that feels ordinary — because a garden you only look at is a picture, and a garden you can hear is a place. Moving water is the single element that makes the difference. The sound of a stream or waterfall does something no plant can: it masks the city, slows your pulse, and pulls you outside to sit with it. It brings birds to drink and dragonflies to hover, turns an evening on the patio into something you look forward to all day, and gives a garden a living heartbeat. In the gray, green Northwest — where we spend so much of the year indoors watching the rain — a water feature is the thing that gets you back into the garden and makes the time out there restorative rather than just pretty. Stillwater builds for exactly that: not a pond to admire, but a source of daily calm you live with — the sound you fall asleep to with the windows open, and the reason your garden becomes the most peaceful room in your home.

Pond & Water Feature FAQs
Are koi ponds a lot of maintenance?
Far less than people expect, when they're built right. A true ecosystem pond — with the proper plants, filtration, and biological balance — largely keeps itself clear and healthy. There's some seasonal care and occasional cleaning, but nothing like the constant battle of a poorly-built kit pond with green water. The maintenance level is designed in from the start; a well-built pond is a joy, not a chore.
What's a pondless waterfall?
It's a waterfall and stream with no open pond — the water flows down and disappears into a hidden, gravel-filled reservoir underground, then recirculates back to the top. You get all the sound, movement, and beauty of a waterfall with almost no maintenance and no open water, which makes it ideal if you want the serenity without the upkeep, or have small children or pets. It's one of our most popular features.
Will it look natural or like a kit?
Natural — that's the entire point of hiring a design-build studio rather than buying a kit. The reason most backyard water features look fake is the rockwork and proportions. We study how water and stone behave in real streams and build that way, placing every stone so the finished feature looks like it was carved by nature, not assembled from a box. That authenticity is what we're known for.
Can you maintain or rebuild an existing pond?
Yes — pond maintenance, repair, and rebuilds are a big part of what we do. Whether your existing pond has green water, a failing pump, a leak, or was just never built well, we can clean it, fix it, or rebuild it into a proper ecosystem feature that runs clear and healthy. Often a struggling pond can be transformed rather than replaced.
Are you registered and insured?
Yes — Stillwater is a registered Washington landscape contractor and fully insured. Water features involve excavation, plumbing, electrical for pumps, and stonework, so registered, insured, professional design-build is exactly what ensures your pond or waterfall is built beautifully, safely, and to last for decades.
