What Is Actually In The Van

A Workshop, Not a Toolbox

The difference between a mobile locksmith and someone with a bag of picks is what is bolted to the floor behind the seats.

A Real Key Machine

Duplicating and code cutting on board, so keys are cut to your lock at the curb rather than ordered and posted.

A Full Pinning Kit

Every common pin size in the drawer, which is what makes rekeying a whole house a one-visit job instead of two.

Stocked Hardware

Deadbolts, cylinders, handles and door closers in the sizes that actually fail, in the finishes people actually have.

Power And Light

An inverter and work lights, because half of what we do happens in a dark driveway at two in the morning.

About Caldwell

Fourteen Years Without a Shop Front

Caldwell has never had premises, and that was a decision rather than a shortcut. A storefront means a customer drives to us, which is exactly the thing they cannot do when the key is snapped in the door or the van will not lock at six in the morning. Putting the whole workshop on wheels costs more to fit out and it means the person who answers the phone is the person driving — but it also means one visit finishes the job. The trade-off we accept in return is that we are not the cheapest quote you will get. We are the one where the number quoted on the phone is the number on the invoice, at three in the afternoon or three in the morning.

How We Price

One Number, Said Out Loud, Before We Drive

The complaint about this trade is almost never the work. It is the invoice.

1

Quoted On The Call

You get a figure from what you describe, before we set off. Not a call-out fee with the real price to follow.

2

No Hour Surcharge

Three in the morning costs what three in the afternoon costs. We are open twenty-four hours; that is not an upgrade.

3

Parts At The Price We Said

The cylinder or deadbolt is quoted with the labor, from van stock, not marked up once we are standing at your door.

4

If It Changes, We Stop

If we arrive and the job is genuinely different from what you described, we tell you the new number and you decide.

Any Hour

Someone Answers This Phone at 3am

Not an answering service that pages a subcontractor. The person who picks up is the person who drives out, and they will quote you before hanging up.

Who Calls Us

Four Kinds of Call, All Day and Night

The van is stocked for the mix rather than for one trade.

Homes

Lockouts, snapped keys, rekeys after a move, and deadbolts fitted while you are actually at home.

Vehicles

Car and van lockouts, keys cut to the door lock, and rear cargo locks that seize on a cold morning.

Job Sites

Keys cut on site for a new crew, site container locks, and temporary hardware on doors that are not hung yet.

Fleets

Vans and box trucks keyed alike so one driver key works the fleet, done overnight while the vehicles are parked.

Coverage

Where Thirty-Five Minutes Is Honest

We cover the metro on both sides of the state line, and we would rather be straight about the edges than claim everywhere. Crossroads, Westport, Brookside, River Market and the near suburbs are typically half an hour at any time of day or night. Overland Park, Independence and the outer ring are closer to forty-five, and in ice or snow it is longer for everybody. Whoever answers will give you the real number for your address before you commit — and if somebody closer would genuinely get to you faster at that hour, we will say so rather than take the booking and keep you waiting.

People We Got To At Odd Hours

I needed six keys cut for a new crew and could not spare an hour driving to a hardware store and back. He met me at the job site, cut them off the van in fifteen minutes, and the crew started on time. I have used him for every site since.
Bo WhitakerJob-site key cutting · Crossroads
Our delivery van's rear lock seized with a full load in it at six in the morning. He was there before seven, freed it, rebuilt the cylinder in the parking lot and we made every drop. No tow, no lost day.
Adaeze NwosuFleet call · River Market
Locked out at eleven at night in Westport with a dead phone battery. A real person answered, quoted me before he set off, and the number he said on the phone was the number I paid. That is rarer than it should be at that hour.

Before You Call

Mobile Locksmithing, Answered Plainly

Is it more expensive because you come to me?

Usually it is cheaper once you count everything. A shop price looks lower until you add the drive there, the drive back, and the fact that a lockout or a snapped key means the thing you would drive is the thing you cannot open. Where a mobile call genuinely costs more is for something trivial you could have picked up in passing — a spare key for a padlock, say. We will tell you when that is the case rather than charging you a call-out for it.

Do you really answer at three in the morning?

Yes, and it is a person rather than an answering service that pages a subcontractor and adds a margin. That distinction matters because it is why we can quote you a firm price on the call: the person you are speaking to is usually the person who will drive out. If we are already on a job and it will be an hour, you will be told that honestly instead of being kept waiting.

Can you cut keys at my door?

Yes — there is a duplicating and code machine bolted into the van, which is the main thing separating a mobile locksmith from someone carrying a bag of picks. We can copy an existing key, or cut a new one to the lock's code if every key is lost. Job sites and fleets are where this earns its money: six keys cut on site in fifteen minutes rather than a foreman losing an hour to a hardware store round trip.

Do you charge more at night or on holidays?

No. The number quoted on the phone is the number on the invoice regardless of the hour or the date. We are genuinely open twenty-four hours, so nights are not an exception we surcharge for — they are simply when a lot of this work happens. The one thing that changes a quote is arriving to find the job is materially different from what was described, and in that case we stop and tell you the new number before doing anything.

Will you prove the property is mine?

We will ask you to, always, and you should be wary of anyone who does not. Photo ID against the address, a lease, a utility bill, or the registration for a vehicle. It takes a minute and it is the single thing that stops this trade being used to get into other people's property. If you have lost everything including your ID, tell us on the phone and we will talk through what else can establish it.
