Seventeen Years In Kansas City

One Rule, And It Is The Whole Business

Kestrel exists because of how badly this trade prices. The pattern is familiar to anyone who has been locked out: a very low number online, a technician who arrives and discovers your lock is somehow special, and a figure four or five times what you agreed to. We decided not to do that, and seventeen years later almost all of our work comes from people who were burned once and asked around.

Who We Help

Homes, Cars And Businesses

Homeowners

Lockouts, rekeys after moving in, deadbolt upgrades and doors that stopped latching.

Drivers

Keys locked in, keys lost, worn keys that will not turn and fobs that stopped working.

Businesses

Shops, offices and restaurants — staff changes, master keys and hardware under daily use.

Landlords

Rekeys between tenants, with old keys accounted for and new ones handed over properly.

How The Bait Works

Four Signs You Are About To Be Overcharged

A Suspiciously Low Number

Nineteen or twenty-nine dollars is not a lockout price anywhere in America. It is an advertisement for a visit, not a quote for a job.

Nobody Will Commit On The Phone

If they will not give a figure before setting off, the figure is being decided after they see how stuck you are.

Your Lock Turns Out To Be Special

Standard residential locks are standard. A technician discovering a rare mechanism on your doorstep is almost always discovering leverage.

Drilling Is Suddenly Necessary

It takes minutes and means you buy a new lock too. Most locks can be picked, and a locksmith who cannot is telling you something.

Why We Will Not Advertise A Headline Number

We could put nineteen dollars at the top of this page and get more calls. We do not, because an honest price depends on the lock, the hour and where you are, and any number printed here would be bait. What we do instead is give you the actual figure on the phone, before anybody gets in a van, and then charge exactly that. It is a worse advertisement and a much better business.

How It Works

Call, Quote, Arrive, Pay That

1

You Call

Tell us what is locked, where you are and roughly what kind of door or vehicle.

2

We Quote A Real Figure

Not a range and not a starting-from. An actual number you can hold us to.

3

We Arrive

In the window we said, with the right stock, and with the license number on the van.

4

You Pay That Figure

With a written receipt. Nothing added, nothing discovered, nothing renegotiated.

No Obligation

What Kansas City Says

The last locksmith quoted twenty-nine dollars on the phone and handed me a bill for two hundred and sixty. Kestrel said a number, turned up, and charged that number. It should not feel remarkable and yet here I am writing a review about it.

Asked for a price to rekey five doors and got a written figure the same afternoon, including the deadbolt that turned out to be a different brand. No adjustment on the day. That is the whole business right there.

They talked me out of a job. Told me my sticking door was a hinge problem, not a lock problem, and that a handyman would charge me less. Then they fixed it anyway for almost nothing. I have sent them four people since.

Common Questions

Why is there no price list on this site?

Because any number we printed would be bait. The honest price depends on the lock, the hour and the location, and you get the real one on the phone before anyone sets off — which is the part that actually protects you.

Is there really no callout fee?

None. Some locksmiths quote the work and then add a separate charge for turning up, which is how a reasonable-sounding number doubles. Ours includes getting there.

What if the job is smaller than you quoted?

You pay the smaller amount. It happens a few times a month — usually a lock that turns out to be repairable rather than needing replacement — and we are not going to charge you for work we did not do.

Do evenings cost more?

After ten at night, yes, and we tell you the figure on the call. Between six in the morning and ten at night it is the standard rate, seven days a week.

How fast can you get here?

Usually thirty to forty minutes across the metro, longer out toward Lee's Summit or in rush hour. You get a real window rather than a hopeful one.

Will you damage my lock?

Usually not. Most locks can be picked and that is what we try first, because it leaves you with the lock you already own and it keeps the bill down.

Can you make a car key if I lost all of them?

Yes, for most makes back to the late nineties, at your vehicle rather than a dealership. Bring proof it is yours — we will not originate a key without it.
