Which Lock Do You Need

Four Honest Answers, One Of Them Is 'None'

Smart locks are genuinely great for some doors and a waste of money on others. Here is how we sort it.

You Just Want No Keys

A keypad deadbolt is the whole answer. No wifi, no app, no subscription, and batteries that last a year or more.

Lots Of People Need Access

Cleaners, dog walkers, family, contractors. Codes you can issue and revoke individually are worth real money here.

You Rent It Out

Codes that expire at checkout end the lockbox era. This is the case where a connected lock most clearly pays for itself.

Honestly, None Of Them

One door, two people, both carry keys already. We will say so — and rekeying the lock you have is a tenth of the price.

About Winsloe

We Will Talk You Out Of It If You Don't Need One

Winsloe started because too many smart locks were being sold to people who needed a rekey and a spare key hidden with a neighbor. Seven years on, the most common thing we do on a first call is ask who actually needs to get in — and a decent share of those calls end with us recommending a keypad deadbolt at a quarter of the price, or nothing at all. The rest of the job is the unglamorous part nobody mentions in the box: checking the backset, the door thickness, the strike alignment and whether a storm door leaves clearance, because that is where almost every bad smart-lock experience actually begins.

What Goes Wrong

Why Smart Locks Get Returned

In seven years, almost every failure we are called to fix is one of these four — and none of them are the lock's fault.

The Door Was Never Right

A strike that is a few millimetres out makes the motor push against the frame every time. It works on day one, then eats batteries and eventually jams.

The Wrong Lock For The Door

Backset, door thickness, bore size, a storm door in front. Buy on looks and there is a real chance it physically cannot fit.

Nobody Set It Up Properly

Auto-lock left on for a household with kids, no spare code for the cleaner, and the app installed on exactly one person's phone.

The Batteries Were A Surprise

Nobody said it takes four AAs, or that wifi models drain far faster. You should know the real number before you buy, not in February.

How An Install Goes

Ninety Minutes, Start To Handover

Including the part where we make sure you can actually use it.

1

Send A Photo Of The Door

The inside of the existing lock and the edge of the door. That tells us the backset, thickness and whether it will fit.

2

We Confirm The Lock

Either the one you bought, or the one we would fit instead — with the reason and the price difference in writing.

3

Fitted And Aligned

Old lock out, strike adjusted so the bolt throws freely, new lock in. The alignment is the part that decides everything later.

4

Set Up On Your Phone

App installed, codes created for whoever needs one, auto-lock set to suit your household, and the spare key handed to you.

Not Sure Which One

Send Us A Photo of Your Door

We will tell you what fits, what we would fit, and whether you actually need a smart lock at all. No charge and no visit required.

What We Always Do

The Part That Isn't In The Box

Five things that separate a smart lock people love from one that ends up back in its packaging.

Measure Before Ordering

Backset, door thickness, bore diameter and storm-door clearance, checked from your photo before anything is bought.

Fix The Strike Alignment

The bolt must throw with no resistance. This one adjustment prevents most battery and jamming complaints.

Keep A Mechanical Key

Every lock we fit still opens with a key, and you leave with one. A dead battery should never mean a locked-out family.

Set Up Every Person

Codes for the people who actually need them, on the phones that actually need the app — not just the person who booked us.

Tell You The Real Battery Life

Honestly, per model, before you choose. Wifi locks are months; keypad-only locks are often more than a year.

Madison Reviews

People Who Stopped Carrying Keys

I had bought a lock online that turned out to be wrong for a door with a storm door in front of it. Rather than fit it anyway and take my money, he showed me the clearance problem, ordered the right one, and came back on the Saturday. That is why I have sent four neighbors his way.

We run two rentals and were drowning in key handovers. Every guest now gets a code that expires at checkout, and the cleaner has her own. He set the whole thing up and wrote a one-page cheat sheet my husband can actually follow.

The lock the previous owners left had been half-installed and ate batteries in three weeks. He diagnosed it as a misaligned strike putting load on the motor, fixed the door rather than selling me a new lock, and it has run eight months on one set.

Smart Locks, Answered Honestly

Do I actually need a smart lock?

Often, no — and we would rather say that than fit one. If a single household carries keys and nobody else needs access, a smart lock solves a problem you do not have, and rekeying your existing deadbolt costs a fraction of it. Where they genuinely earn their money is when several different people need access at different times: cleaners, dog walkers, contractors, grown-up kids, guests. If that is your house, the difference is significant.

Can you fit a lock I already bought?

Yes, and we do it often. Send a photo of the inside of your current lock and the edge of the door before we come out — that tells us the backset, the door thickness and the bore size, which is where most online purchases go wrong. If the one you bought will not fit, we will show you exactly why rather than forcing it, and you can return it and choose again with the measurements in hand.

What happens when the batteries die?

Every lock we fit still has a mechanical key override, and you leave with a key on install day. Beyond that, the locks warn you well in advance — usually weeks of low-battery alerts before anything stops. Most also have an external contact you can hold a 9V battery against to power the motor long enough to open the door. A dead battery should be an annoyance, never a lockout, and if a lock cannot promise that we do not fit it.

How long do the batteries really last?

It depends almost entirely on whether the lock talks to wifi. A keypad-only deadbolt commonly runs a year or more on one set. A wifi-connected lock that reports every event and accepts remote unlocks is realistically three to six months, more if it uses a hub rather than connecting directly. We will tell you the honest number for the specific model before you choose, because being surprised by this in February is the single most common regret we hear.

Are smart locks less secure than a normal deadbolt?

Mechanically, a good smart deadbolt is the same grade of hardware as a good conventional one — the bolt, the strike and the door are what actually resist force, and that does not change. What is genuinely different is that you have added a second way in: a code, an app or a radio. That is a real consideration, but in practice the overwhelming majority of break-ins are still someone forcing a door or a window rather than defeating a lock electronically. We would worry about your strike plate and your back slider long before your wifi.

Can you set up access for a rental?

Yes, and it is one of the clearest wins there is. Guests get a code that starts at check-in and expires at checkout automatically, your cleaner gets a permanent one, and you never meet anyone at the door with a key or maintain a lockbox that everyone on the street has watched being opened. We set up the schedule, connect it to your booking platform where the lock supports it, and leave you a one-page sheet for whoever else needs to manage it.
