About Sallowbrook

It Started With A Church Kitchen And Six Lunches

In 2004 a retired school cook started delivering six lunches a day from a church kitchen in Barelas to neighbors who couldn't get out. Word spread, the neighbors brought friends, and Sallowbrook became a nonprofit with its own kitchen on 4th Street. Every meal is still cooked here, and every driver still knocks, waits and says hello — because for many of the people we serve, that knock is the only visit of the day.

Drive One Lunch Route A Week

Volunteer drivers are the heart of Sallowbrook. Pick up a cooler of meals at 10:30, follow a route of ten to fifteen stops near home or work, and be back before one. You'll need a car, a driver's license and proof of insurance; we'll handle the background check and a short ride-along on your first day.

What A Daily Knock Means

My mother is ninety-one and lives alone in Barelas. The meal matters, but what I really count on is Luis knocking every day at noon. He called me the morning she fell.

After my hip surgery I couldn't stand at the stove. The meals started three days after my nurse called them, and the green chile stew is better than mine.

I drive a route every Tuesday on my lunch break. Twelve stops, forty minutes, and the best part of my week.

Ways To Give

Sponsor A Week Of Meals

Clients give what they can toward their meals, and gifts cover the rest. Choose an amount, send us a note, and we'll text or email a secure giving link — or ask about sponsoring a neighbor's meals for a month.

Questions

About Meals And Visits

How much do meals cost?

Clients are asked for a suggested donation of $3 a meal, given privately and only if they can. Nobody is turned away or asked about their income.

Where do you deliver?

Across Albuquerque, the South Valley, Los Ranchos and Rio Rancho. Call if you're unsure — we may have a route nearby.

Can you handle special diets?

Yes. A registered dietitian plans lower-sodium, diabetic-friendly and soft-food meals. Tell us about allergies when you sign up.

Can I order for my parent who lives here?

Yes. Many requests come from adult children. We'll talk with your parent too, and we can call you if a driver is worried.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No. Anyone can request meals. After a hospital stay, a nurse or social worker can call us to speed things up.

Is my gift tax-deductible?

As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Sallowbrook can accept gifts that are generally deductible as the law allows. A receipt follows by email.
