For eighteen years our artisans have hand-troweled Venetian plaster, limewash, Tadelakt, Marmorino, Roman clay, and micro-cement across Santa Barbara, Montecito, and the coast, for homeowners and for the designers who trust us with their most beautiful projects. We work in genuine mineral materials, mix and tint color by hand on site, and apply and burnish every surface the traditional way — slowly, by feel, in layers. What's the difference between limewash and Venetian plaster?
Both are natural lime finishes, but they create very different looks. Limewash is a thin, breathable, chalky finish with soft, cloudy movement and a matte, old-world character — beautiful on both interiors and exteriors, and often used for that whitewashed Mediterranean feel. Venetian plaster is a thicker, hand-troweled and polished finish that builds up to a smooth, marble-like surface with luminous depth and a stone-cool sheen. We'll help you choose the finish that suits your space, your architecture, and the feeling you're after.
Is natural plaster really better than paint?
For the right project, absolutely — and it's a genuinely different category, not just a fancier paint. Natural lime and clay finishes have a translucency, depth, and movement that flat paint can't replicate, because the light interacts with the mineral surface itself. They're also breathable, which protects older walls and resists mold, and they're made from natural materials. And they age beautifully, developing a patina over the years. Paint has its place, but for walls you want to feel like art, natural plaster is in a class of its own.
Can you do waterproof finishes for bathrooms?
Yes — Tadelakt is exactly that. It's a traditional Moroccan lime plaster that's burnished with a stone and treated with olive-oil soap to create a completely seamless, waterproof surface with no grout lines. It's stunning in showers, around tubs, on vanities, and on bathroom walls, giving you a continuous, luminous, water-resistant finish that's both practical and gorgeous. Micro-cement is another seamless, water-resistant option for a more contemporary, cementitious look. We'll recommend the right one for your wet areas.
Will it work on my exterior?
Limewash in particular is wonderful on exteriors and has been used on Mediterranean and Spanish-style homes for centuries — it's what gives them that soft, chalky, sun-washed look. Because it's breathable, it's actually beneficial for traditional stucco and masonry, letting them release moisture. We tint it by hand to the perfect tone and can achieve everything from crisp whites to warm, earthy Mediterranean colors. It's one of the most transformative and authentic things you can do for the exterior of a home in Santa Barbara.
How long does a plaster project take?
It depends on the finish and the size of the space. Natural plaster is deliberately unhurried — the beauty comes from patient, layered hand-application and proper curing between coats, so it takes longer than rolling on paint. A limewash accent might be a couple of days; a full Venetian plaster entry or a Tadelakt bathroom takes longer, plus the sampling phase beforehand.
