Our Approach

We Ask Why the Pests Are There — Then Fix That

Conventional pest control sprays the symptom. Integrated Pest Management starts with the cause: the moisture attracting the carpenter ants, the gap under the siding the mice found, the aphid boom that invited everything else. We inspect first, fix the conditions, use targeted botanical treatments only where they're needed, and monitor so problems stay solved. It's slower thinking — and it's why our fixes last.

  • Inspection before any treatment, always
  • Botanical and mineral products first
  • Exclusion and habitat fixes over sprays
  • Monitoring so it stays fixed
Why Gentle Works

Tough on Pests. Safe for Everything You're Protecting.

Effective pest control doesn't need to nuke the backyard.

Botanical-First Products

Plant-derived and mineral-based treatments — essential oils, diatomaceous earth, borate — chosen before anything synthetic.

Pets Stay Home

Our targeted methods mean dogs, cats, and backyard chickens don't need to board out for treatment day.

Pollinators Protected

No broadcast spraying, no treating blooms, ever. Bees, butterflies, and your vegetable garden stay out of the line of fire.

Science, Not Habit

IPM is the method universities and organic farms use — evidence-based thresholds, not calendar spraying.

The IPM Ladder

Four Levels of Intervention — We Start at the Bottom

Most companies start at level four. We climb only as far as your pest problem requires.

1

Prevention & Habitat

Fix the moisture, seal the gaps, clear the harborage — most pest problems end right here.

2

Physical Controls

Barriers, traps, one-way doors, and exclusion mesh — no chemistry involved at all.

3

Biological Allies

Beneficial insects and nematodes that hunt your pests the way nature already does.

4

Targeted Botanicals

When treatment is truly needed: plant-derived products, applied precisely where pests travel.

How It Works

From First Walk-Through to Lasting Fix

Every engagement starts with understanding, not spraying.

1

The Walk-Through

We inspect inside and out — entry points, moisture, habitat — and identify exactly what you're dealing with.

2

The Plan

A written plan showing what we found, what we'll do at each IPM level, and a flat price.

3

The Fix

Exclusion, habitat corrections, and targeted treatments — with every product named and explained.

4

The Follow-Through

Monitoring visits confirm it worked, and seasonal check-ins keep it that way.

The Honest Trade-Off

Gentle Doesn't Mean Slow Results — It Means Lasting Ones

Let's be straight: a broadcast spray kills more bugs on day one. But it also kills the predators that were eating your pests, misses the nest, and wears off — so you're re-spraying every quarter forever. Our way takes a visit or two longer to win, and then it stays won, because the conditions that invited the pests are gone. Most of our customers came to us after years on the spray treadmill.

  • Fixes that hold for years, not months
  • No quarterly chemical treadmill
  • A yard that's still alive afterward
  • Every product named, every label shared

Every other company wanted to spray the whole house quarterly. Fern & Field found where the ants were coming in, sealed it, used a botanical treatment along one wall, and taught us what to fix in the garden. That was a year ago — still no ants.

We keep chickens and two very curious dogs, so 'pet-safe' isn't a nice-to-have for us. They walked us through every product down to the label, and the flea treatment worked better than the harsh stuff we'd tried before.

Our community garden had an aphid disaster and we couldn't use conventional sprays. Their beneficial-insect plan turned it around in six weeks — ladybugs and lacewings doing the work. Brilliant, and the kids loved learning about it.
Fair Questions

Does Eco Pest Control Actually Work?

Is eco-friendly pest control as effective as conventional spraying?

For lasting results, it's more effective. Conventional sprays knock pests down fast but don't remove what attracted them, so they return. IPM fixes entry points and habitat first — it takes a visit or two longer to fully win, and then the problem stays solved.

What products do you actually use?

Botanical and mineral products first: essential-oil-based treatments, diatomaceous earth, borates, and organic-approved baits. Every product is named in your plan with its label attached. If a situation ever genuinely requires something stronger, we tell you and you decide.

Is it really safe for my dog to be home during treatment?

For nearly all of our treatments, yes — that's the point of targeted application. Your technician will flag the rare exception (like a wasp-nest removal) before starting, along with exactly how long to keep curious noses away.

How do you handle rats without poison?

Exclusion: we find and seal every entry point, install one-way doors so rodents inside can leave but not return, and use snap traps in secured stations for any stragglers. No rodenticides means no poisoned owls, hawks, or pets — and no dead rats in your walls.

How much does it cost?

Walk-throughs are free and every plan is a written flat price. Because we fix causes, most homes need a one-time project plus an optional seasonal check-in — not a forever-contract. You'll usually spend less over two years than on a quarterly spray plan.

What areas do you serve?

All of Portland — Sellwood, Hawthorne, Alberta Arts, St. Johns, Multnomah Village — plus Beaverton and close-in Washington County. Somewhere else nearby? Ask; we probably come to you.
