Calm, Safe, and Unhurried — the Way a Newborn Session Should Be
Linden & Lamb began nine years ago with a simple conviction: a newborn session should feel as gentle as the baby it's for. Our Capitol Hill studio is kept warm, quiet, and spotless, with everything sanitized between sessions, because your two-week-old deserves nothing less. Every pose we use is newborn-safety trained — supported, secure, and never forced — and we build the whole session around your baby's rhythm, not a clock. Feeding breaks, soothing, a diaper change, a long cuddle: all of it is part of the plan, and none of it is rushed. What you get in return is the opposite of the stiff, over-propped look — soft, warm, timeless portraits that actually look like your family. We photograph both classic posed setups in the studio and relaxed lifestyle sessions in your own home, and many families do a maternity session first so the whole story is kept. Nine years, a hundred and twenty families, and the same quiet approach every single time.

Two Weeks You Won't Get Back — Kept for Good
The newborn stage is impossibly short. The scrunched knees, the milk-drunk sighs, the way they curl right back into the shape they held for nine months — in a few weeks, it's gone, and the photos on your phone never quite capture it. That's the whole reason this studio exists. A proper newborn session slows the fortnight down and keeps it: the tiny fingernails, the swirl of hair, the weight of them asleep on your chest, the look on a big sister's face. We handle the lighting, the posing, the patience, and the safety so you don't have to think about any of it — you just get to be there. And because we photograph both the polished studio portraits and the real, unposed moments at home, you end up with the full truth of these first days, not a single stiff pose. Years from now, when your not-so-tiny person rolls their eyes at the framed portrait in the hallway, you'll be quietly grateful you slowed down for one afternoon and kept it.
- ✓The details phones can't catch
- ✓Studio portraits + real moments at home
- ✓You're present — we handle everything else
- ✓Heirlooms for the hallway, not the cloud
The First Portraits They'll Keep Forever
We were nervous first-time parents and Linden & Lamb made the whole session feel calm and safe. She was endlessly patient with our daughter — feeding breaks, soothing, the works — and never once rushed. The portraits are quiet and timeless, not the cheesy props you see everywhere, and we get a little teary every time we walk past the framed one in the hall. Worth every minute.
I booked a maternity session and then the newborn session two weeks later, and I'm so glad I did. The studio is warm and spotless, everything is sanitized, and she clearly knows newborn safety cold — every pose felt secure. The images are soft, warm, and completely us. She captured our son's tiny hands in a way I will treasure for the rest of my life.
Three kids in, this was by far the best newborn experience we've had. The lifestyle shots at home with our older two are the ones we love most — real, a little messy, full of love. She made our toddlers part of it instead of shushing them. Professional, kind, and genuinely gifted with babies and nervous parents alike.
Newborn Sessions, Answered
When should we book, and when's the session?
Book during pregnancy — ideally in your second or third trimester — so your window is reserved. Newborn sessions happen best between days 5 and 14, when babies are sleepiest and curl most easily into those classic poses. Once your baby arrives, you simply let us know and we lock in the exact day. If you're already past two weeks, don't worry — we still create beautiful work with slightly different, more awake-and-lifestyle-leaning sessions.
Is newborn posing safe?
Safety is the first thing, always. Every pose we use is newborn-safety trained, fully supported, and never forced into anything a baby shouldn't do. Some of the images you see online that look like a baby balancing unaided are actually careful composites of two safe, spotted frames — we do those the safe way. Your baby is supported and spotted at every moment, the studio is warm and sanitized, and we move entirely at your baby's pace. You are welcome to be hands-on the whole time.
Posed studio or lifestyle at home — which should we pick?
Both are lovely and you don't have to choose blindly. Posed studio sessions give you the timeless, wrapped, curled-up portraits on clean neutral backdrops. In-home lifestyle sessions give you softer, real-life frames — baby in the nursery, on your bed, cuddled by siblings. Many families do a bit of both, and we're glad to talk through what suits your home light and your vision on our planning call. There's no wrong answer.
What do we need to bring or prepare?
Almost nothing — that's by design. The studio has a full wardrobe of wraps, bonnets, headbands, and maternity gowns, plus all the props and backdrops. We'll send a short, gentle prep guide (a well-fed, sleepy baby is the main ingredient) after you book. Bring a change of clothes for baby, any pacifier they use, and a heart-full of patience. We supply everything else, including snacks and a comfortable place for you to feed and rest.
How much does a session cost, and what do we get?
Sessions are a session fee plus your choice of digital and print collections, and we'll walk you through the current options after you reach out so you can plan comfortably. Every family receives a hand-edited digital gallery; most also choose prints, an album, or framed pieces, since these are exactly the images you'll want off your phone and on the wall. We keep our calendar limited each month so every session gets our full, unhurried attention — book early, especially for due dates in spring and summer.
Do you photograph maternity and the first year too?
Yes, and we love when families keep the whole arc. A maternity portrait in your third trimester is beautiful on its own and makes a natural first chapter. After the newborn session, our Baby's First Year milestones capture the sitter stage (around six months) and the first-birthday cake smash — the three moments that change the fastest. Booking them together means a consistent, timeless look across your baby's entire first year, all from one studio that already knows your family.
