Dry Needling in Fort Collins, CO

Hands-on every session, a full hour, one-to-one. And always paired with loading — because manual therapy opens a window, and what you do in that window is what actually holds.

Dry Needling

What It Is, What It Isn't, and What It Won't Do

The single most-asked-about thing we do, and the one with the most confusion attached.

It Isn't Acupuncture

Same thin filament needle, entirely different framework. Acupuncture works from meridians and traditional Chinese medicine; dry needling targets a specific tight band in a specific muscle, chosen from a physical examination. The tool overlaps and nothing else does.

The Twitch Is the Point

When the needle reaches a taut band the muscle often twitches involuntarily — an odd, deep, brief sensation most people find more strange than painful. That local twitch response is associated with the best outcomes.

You'll Be Sore for a Day

Post-needling soreness is normal and expected, usually 24 to 48 hours, a bit like a hard gym session. We say this before, not after. Heat and gentle movement help; ice mostly doesn't.

The Evidence Is Moderate

Reviews generally find short-term reductions in pain and improvements in range, with less certainty about long-term effects on their own. That is why we treat it as an adjunct that buys a window, never as the treatment.

Safety, Properly

Single-use sterile needles, and real caution around the ribcage and neck where pneumothorax is the risk that matters. Certified training, screened contraindications, and we'll decline to needle an area if it isn't appropriate.

You Can Say No

A good number of our patients never have a needle. Manual therapy, mobilisation and loading do most of the work anyway. Nobody here will push it, and saying no won't change the quality of your session.

About Ashcroft

Eleven Years and One Honest Sentence

The sentence is this: manual therapy does not fix anything durable on its own.

What it does — reliably, and often dramatically within a session — is reduce pain and improve how a joint or muscle moves for a while. That window is genuinely valuable, because it lets you load something you couldn't load before, and loading is what produces lasting change. Hands-on work without that follow-through feels wonderful and wears off by Thursday.

So every session here is roughly half hands-on and half work you do standing up, and you leave with a programme. It is a less magical story than most manual therapy clinics tell, and eleven years of people coming back suggests it's the right one.

  • A full hour, one-to-one, hands-on every visit
  • Always paired with a loading programme
  • Dry needling offered, never pushed
  • Straight answers about what the evidence says

Mostly Stiff, Sore and Stuck

Neck Pain & Headaches

Upper cervical joints and the deep neck muscles refer pain into the head with striking consistency. Mobilisation, needling where appropriate, and the deep neck flexor work that keeps it away.

Shoulder Stiffness

Frozen shoulder, impingement, post-injury stiffness. Joint mobilisation to open range, then loading into that new range in the same session — the two halves have to happen together.

Low Back Pain

The commonest thing we see. Manual therapy for early relief, then graded loading and a plain-English explanation of why your back is sore, which is often the more useful half.

Hip & Glute Pain

Gluteal tendinopathy, deep hip pain, lateral hip that hurts lying on it. Needling the glute complex is one of the more reliably effective applications, alongside a tendon loading programme.

Calf, Achilles & Foot

Plantar heel pain, Achilles tendinopathy, stubborn calf tightness. Hands-on plus heavy slow loading, which is the combination with the best evidence behind it.

Cupping & IASTM

Available, and we're honest that the evidence is thinner than for the rest. Low risk, some people find them genuinely helpful, and we'd rather offer them openly than pretend they're more than they are.

A Session

How the Hour Splits

1

Ten Minutes Talking

What's changed since last time, what the homework felt like, what you avoided. The answers usually decide what the rest of the hour is for.

2

Twenty-Five Minutes Hands-On

Soft tissue work, joint mobilisation, needling if you want it. This is the part that opens the window.

3

Twenty Minutes Loading

Straight into the new range, under load, while it's available. This is the part that makes it stick, and it's the part most clinics leave out.

4

Five Minutes Writing It Down

Two or three things for the week, with loads and reps, emailed before you get home. Never a list of twelve.

Four Things We Believe

And Will Say to Your Face

1

Nothing Is 'Out of Place'

Your pelvis is not rotated, your spine is not out, and nobody put anything back. Joints move and get stiff; they don't slip out and need reseating. The explanation matters because 'fragile and misaligned' is a belief that keeps people in pain.

2

Feeling Better Isn't the Same as Being Better

Hands-on work reliably makes you feel better for a few days. That's worth having and it isn't a fix. The measure that counts is whether you can load the thing in six weeks.

3

We'll Tell You If It's Not Working

If four sessions haven't shifted it, more of the same isn't the answer. We'll change the approach or send you to imaging, a physician or someone with a different skill set.

4

You Don't Need Us Forever

Most people finish in four to eight sessions with a programme they run themselves. We're not building a maintenance subscription, and if that's what you're looking for we're the wrong clinic.

Booking, Cost and What to Expect

No Referral Needed

Colorado has unrestricted direct access — book straight in, no physician referral, no time limit. Physical therapists in Colorado are permitted to perform dry needling with the required training.

$140 an Hour, Published

The same rate whether or not needling is used — we're not charging extra for a technique. Superbill provided; HSA and FSA cards work directly.

Wear Something You Can Move In

And that gives access to the area — shorts for hips and knees, a vest for shoulders and neck. Needling needs skin contact.

Book Around Soreness

You'll likely be sore for a day after needling, so don't book it the afternoon before a race or a big lift. Say what's in your week and we'll time it.

Driving Afterwards Is Fine

Occasionally people feel a bit light-headed straight after a session, which passes in a few minutes. We'll keep you in the chair until it does.

Needling Is Optional, Always

Say no at booking, or at any point in a session, and nothing about your treatment or your welcome changes.

Questions

Mostly About the Needles

Does dry needling hurt?

The needle itself is very thin and most people barely feel it go in. What you feel is the twitch response — a deep, brief cramp-like sensation when the needle finds a taut band. Odd rather than painful for most people, and it's over in a second. Expect a day or two of muscle soreness afterwards.

Is it the same as acupuncture?

Same needle, different reasoning entirely. Acupuncture works from traditional Chinese medicine and meridian theory. Dry needling targets a specific muscle identified by a physical examination, using a Western anatomical model. The overlap is the tool and nothing else.

Is it safe?

In trained hands, yes. Single-use sterile needles, screened contraindications, and particular care around the ribcage and neck where pneumothorax is the meaningful risk. Minor bruising and soreness are common; serious events are rare and are what the training exists to prevent.

How many sessions will I need?

Four to eight for most things, and you should feel a change within two or three. If you don't, we'll say so and change tack rather than booking you in for another six.

Can I just come for the hands-on part?

You can, and we'll be honest that it's the less effective half. Hands-on work makes things feel better for a few days; the loading is what makes it hold. We'd rather do both and we won't refuse to treat you if you only want one.

Do I need a referral in Colorado?

No. Colorado has unrestricted direct access, so you can book with a physical therapist without seeing a physician first, with no time limit. Some insurance plans want a referral for reimbursement, which we check for you before your first visit.
