Who Actually Pays for This in Florida
This is the most misunderstood part of the category, and vagueness about it costs families months. Here is the straight version — including the parts that are bad news.
Original Medicare · does NOT pay for remodeling
Not for a curbless shower, not for a walk-in tub, not for a ramp. Part B covers durable medical equipment — a wheelchair, a hospital bed, a commode — because those are equipment, not modifications to a building. Anyone implying otherwise is being loose with the truth.
Medicare Advantage · sometimes, and it is worth checking
Some Part C plans carry a small annual allowance for home safety items, often a few hundred dollars, sometimes covering grab bars or a bath bench. It varies by plan and by year. We will look at your plan's benefit document with you rather than guess.
Florida Medicaid waivers · yes, with a wait
The SMMC Long-Term Care programme can cover environmental accessibility adaptations. It requires eligibility and there is typically a waiting list, so it is worth starting the application early rather than after a fall.
VA benefits · the most generous route by far
HISA grants, and the SAH/SHA housing adaptation grants for service-connected disability, are substantially larger than anything else on this list. If there is a veteran in the family this is the first door to knock on, and we will help with the paperwork.

Walk-in tubs are advertised heavily to older homeowners, and for someone who genuinely loves a bath and can transfer safely onto a seat, a good one is a real improvement.
But you get in, close the door, and then sit there while it fills — and you cannot get out until it drains. That is several minutes each way, wet, in a cooling tub. For most people who called us about mobility, a curbless shower with a fold-down seat is safer, faster, cheaper and easier for a carer to help with. We fit both, and we say this before you buy either.

What about VA benefits?

How long will we be without a bathroom?
Five to nine days for most conversions. Where the house has a second bathroom we sequence so one stays usable throughout. Where it does not, we tell you that at the quote rather than on day one, and we can usually keep the toilet live for most of the job.
Is a curbless shower going to leak?
Not if the floor is built right. The whole tray area is graded and waterproofed as a single membrane before tiling, and we flood-test it before anything goes down. Curbless failures are waterproofing failures, and that is a workmanship question, not a design one.
Can you just fit grab bars? It feels too small to call about.
Please call. It is a genuine job and it prevents genuine injuries. The important part is that they go into solid blocking behind the wall — bars fixed into tile or plasterboard anchors pull out under exactly the load they exist for, which is worse than having none.
What is CAPS certification?
Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist — a designation from the National Association of Home Builders covering the design, the clinical side of mobility, and the codes. It is not a licence; our Florida building licence is separate. It does mean the person designing your bathroom has been trained in how people actually fall.
Should we widen doors or move the bedroom downstairs?
Often downstairs, honestly. If there is a room and a bathroom that can work on the ground floor, that is usually cheaper and better than a stair lift plus upstairs modifications. We will run both numbers for you even though one of them is much less work for us.
How steep should a ramp be?
1:12 — one inch of rise for every twelve inches of run — with level landings at the top and at every turn, and handrails on both sides. It is the only slope we build. Steeper ramps are common, cheaper, shorter, and unusable by anyone self-propelling a wheelchair.
