Vertical transport, and nothing adjacent to it
Bramfield has installed and serviced residential elevators across Northern Nevada and the Tahoe basin since 2005. It is all we do — we are not a mobility showroom, not an accessibility remodeler, and we do not sell stairlifts.
That last one costs us work and we keep it that way on purpose. A stairlift is sometimes the right answer, and a company that sells both has a reason to steer you toward the more expensive one. We would rather tell you honestly that a lift on your staircase would solve the problem for a fraction of the money, and let you go and buy one somewhere else.

Four machines, and the house picks
Each of these needs something different from the building. Most homes turn out to have two realistic options, not four — the survey is how we find out which two.
Residential Elevator Installation
A conventional cabbed elevator in a built hoistway. Traction units keep the machinery inside the shaft; hydraulic units need a machine space and a tank nearby. Both want a pit of roughly eight to twelve inches and real overhead clearance above the top landing.
Through-Floor & Shaftless Lifts
A platform that rises through a hole cut in the floor, with no hoistway at all. The least building work of any option and often the answer where there is nowhere to put a shaft — but it serves two floors only.
Vacuum (Pneumatic) Elevators
A self-contained tube that needs no pit and no machine room, which makes it the retrofit that fits where nothing else will. The trade-off is a smaller cab and a lower capacity, and we will tell you the numbers before you fall for the look.
Vertical Platform Lifts
An open or enclosed platform for wheelchair access over shorter rises, indoors or out. Governed by a different standard than elevators, which changes the permitting and the inspection.
Door-Gap Safety Retrofits
Space guards, gate monitors and door interlocks for older residential elevators, where the gap between the outer door and the car gate is large enough to be a hazard to a small child.
Service, Testing & Inspection
Scheduled annual service and testing on any make, with the appointment booked at the end of each visit rather than left as something you are supposed to remember.
Modernisation & Replacement
Controllers, doors, fixtures and drives on units from the eighties and nineties. Often far cheaper than a new machine, and it keeps the existing hoistway you already paid to build.
Five numbers that decide what you can have
Overhead clearance at the top landing
The distance from the top floor to the underside of the structure above it. This is the number that most often rules a machine out, and it is the one almost nobody checks before getting a quote — including, frequently, the company giving the quote.
Pit depth
Most residential elevators want a recess of roughly eight to twelve inches below the lowest landing. On a slab-on-grade house that means breaking concrete, which is a cost and a decision, not a detail.
Whether the space stacks
A hoistway has to be vertically aligned on every floor it serves. Stacked closets are the classic answer; a bathroom above a kitchen is not. This is a five-minute check that saves a fortnight of design.
Where the machinery can live
Hydraulic drives need a machine space for the pump and tank within a limited distance. Traction keeps it in the shaft. Vacuum needs neither. Whether you have a suitable cupboard often decides the drive type for you.
What the seismic requirements add
Northern Nevada sits in a seismic design category that adds bracing and retention requirements to elevator installations. It is not optional and it belongs in the quote rather than appearing as a change order.
Four commitments
We survey before we quote
Nobody gets a price from a floor plan. We measure the head height, check whether the space stacks and look at where machinery could sit, and only then tell you which machines are genuinely available to you.
We check the door gap on every call
Any service visit to an older residential elevator includes measuring the space between the hoistway door and the car gate. If it is a hazard we say so in writing, whether or not you called us about it.
We book the next test before we leave
Annual testing is the difference between a machine that gets old and a machine that gets dangerous. We schedule it at the end of the visit rather than sending a reminder you will archive.
We will talk you out of an elevator
If one floor is the problem and a stairlift would solve it, we will say so — and we do not sell stairlifts, so there is nothing in it for us either way.

It is almost never the floor space
People assume the constraint is finding five feet by five feet on each floor. In practice that part is usually solvable — a stacked pair of closets, a corner of a hallway, a portion of a garage.
What stops projects is the vertical envelope. A conventional elevator needs a pit below the lowest landing and meaningful clearance above the top one, and the top landing in a two-storey house is very often directly under a sloped roof. There is nothing to be done about a roof pitch except choose a different machine, and by the time somebody discovers this the design fees are usually already spent.
So the survey starts at the top of the house, not the bottom. Twenty minutes with a laser measure tells us whether you are choosing between four machines or two — and occasionally that the answer is a through-floor lift and a much smaller building project than you were bracing for.

Builder's work, then install
Your builder forms the pit and hoistway to our drawings; we install, wire and commission. We coordinate directly with them so the shaft is not built an inch out.
Test, hand over, and book the next one
Full commissioning test with you present, a walkthrough of the emergency lowering and the phone, and next year's service appointment in the diary before we leave.
Been told your house can't take an elevator?
Sometimes that is right and sometimes it means a conventional machine was the only one considered. The survey costs you nothing and takes about twenty minutes.

How much space does a home elevator need?
Less floor area than most people expect and more vertical room. A common two-passenger cab sits in a shaft of roughly five feet by four, which is about the footprint of a stacked pair of closets. The harder requirements are a pit of eight to twelve inches below the lowest landing and genuine clearance above the top one — and in a two-storey house that top landing is often under a sloped roof, which is what actually rules machines out.
What does a home elevator cost in Reno?
A two-stop residential elevator typically lands in the mid five figures installed, before your builder's work on the pit and hoistway, which is a separate and sometimes substantial line. Vacuum elevators and through-floor lifts often come in lower because they need far less construction. Platform lifts are lower again. We give you rough numbers for every option your house allows at the end of the survey rather than one number for the machine we would prefer to sell.
What is a vacuum elevator and is it any good?
It is a self-contained tube that moves the cab by changing air pressure, so it needs no pit, no machine room and very little building work. For retrofits where there is nowhere to put a shaft, it is often the only realistic option, and it looks striking. The trade-offs are real: smaller cab, lower weight capacity, generally no wheelchair use in the smaller models, and a distinctly audible pump. We would rather you hear those from us than discover them later.
Would a stairlift do instead?
Often, yes — and we do not sell them, so we have no reason to say otherwise. If the problem is one flight of stairs, the user can transfer on and off a seat, and nobody needs to move a wheelchair between floors, a stairlift solves it for a small fraction of the money and a fraction of the disruption. We will tell you when that is the honest answer and point you at somebody who fits them.
Do I need a permit?
Yes, and which one depends on the machine. A residential elevator and a vertical platform lift fall under different standards, with different inspection requirements. Northern Nevada also sits in a seismic design category that adds bracing and retention requirements. We handle the application and put the seismic work in the original quote rather than raising it as a change order later.
How long does an installation take?
The machine itself is usually three to five days on site. The timeline that matters is the building work before it: forming the pit, framing the hoistway and running power typically takes your builder one to three weeks, and lead times on the equipment itself commonly run eight to sixteen weeks. We give you the equipment lead time at the quote so the sequence can be planned around it.
What is the door gap and should I worry about it?
On elevators with a swinging landing door and a folding car gate there is a space between the two. On older residential installations that space can be several inches, deep enough for a small child to be in it when the outer door closes and the car moves. It is a known and documented hazard, and the standard has since been changed. If your home has an elevator installed before roughly the last decade, it is worth having the gap measured — the fix is space guards and sometimes a gate monitor, and it is about half a day of work.
How often does a home elevator need servicing?
Annually at minimum, and most residential elevators in the country do not get it. The parts that wear are the ones you cannot see: door interlocks, safety gear, cables and controller relays. We book the next visit before leaving the current one, because a service interval that depends on a homeowner remembering is not really an interval.
What happens in a power cut?
Every machine we install has a way down without power — usually a battery lowering system that brings the cab to the nearest landing and opens the doors, plus a battery-backed light and telephone or intercom in the car. We test all three at commissioning and again at each annual service, and we walk you through using them before we hand over.
