Why the Quote Is the Product

The Four-Hour Kitchen-Table Close, and Why We Don't Do It

If you have had window companies out before, you know the shape of it. A long presentation, a price that lands high, then a manager phone call, then a discount that only exists if you sign tonight. It works often enough that entire national brands are built on it.

The reason it works is that you have nothing to compare. A per-opening written price fixes that in one step — you can hold our number against anyone else's, line by line, with nobody sitting in your kitchen.

  • We measure, photograph every opening, and leave
  • You get a price per opening, not one lump sum
  • It holds ninety days — no expiring discount
  • If six of your nine windows only need sashes rebuilt, we say so
How to Read Any Window Quote

Five Lines That Decide What You Actually Paid For

Use this on our quote and on everyone else's. Two quotes with the same total can be very different jobs, and these are the lines where the difference hides.

01

Full-frame or insert — and it must say which

An insert is a smaller job and should cost less. A quote that does not name the method is a quote you cannot compare. If a frame is rotten, an insert over it buys you a few years and hides the problem.

02

Who is on the crew

Many national brands sell and then subcontract the install. Ask whether the people who measured will be the people who fit. Window failures are overwhelmingly install failures, not product failures.

03

Sill pan, flashing and how it ties to the housewrap

This is what keeps water out of your wall. It is invisible after the trim goes on, which is exactly why it is the first thing skipped on a cheap install.

04

Interior and exterior finish — included or not

Capping, trim, drywall return and paint. A low number with 'finish by others' on it is not a low number, it is an unfinished job.

05

Whether the price expires

A quote that is only good tonight is telling you the number was never based on the work. Ours holds ninety days because it was calculated from your openings.

How It Goes

Measure, Quote, Order, Fit

Roughly eight to twelve weeks from measure to installed, most of it waiting on manufacture.

01

Measure

About an hour. Every opening measured and photographed, sills probed for rot. We do not present, and we do not stay for coffee.

02

Written quote

Per opening, naming the method, the finish and the repairs. Emailed within two working days. Holds ninety days.

03

Order & lead time

Six to ten weeks for manufacture on most units. We give you the date we were given, and we tell you when it moves.

04

Fit & finish

One to three days for most houses. Pans, flashing, insulation, capping and trim, and the old units taken away the same day.

Built for This Climate

What Actually Matters at Syracuse Latitude

We sit under a lake-effect snow belt with about 120 inches a year and a long freeze. Some of what window brochures sell matters enormously here and some of it does not matter at all.

Condensation is a humidity problem, not a window fault

New windows are tighter, so the moisture your house always made stops leaking out and shows up on the glass. We tell you this before you buy, not after you call us about it in January.

U-factor beats SHGC up here

In a heating climate you are buying insulation, not sun rejection. A southern-market coating optimised for keeping heat out is the wrong glass for Onondaga County.

Air sealing beats glass upgrades

The draft you feel at the ledge is almost always the gap around the frame, not the glass. Triple glazing on a badly sealed install is money spent in the wrong place.

Sill pans, because of ice dams

Meltwater backs up under trim here in a way it does not further south. The pan and flashing are what stop that becoming a rotten wall.

Noise is mass and seal

If you are on a main road, laminated glass in one leaf does more than a third pane. We will tell you which of your openings would actually benefit.

NY rebates change every year

We tell you what is current when you quote and we do not build a rebate you might not get into the price.

When You Should Not Replace a Window

Pre-war Syracuse houses are full of sash windows that outlived every replacement unit sold since. If the frame is sound and the sashes are solid, a rebuild with new rope, new glazing and a decent interior storm gets you most of the performance for a fraction of the cost — and keeps the window that suits the house.

We say this on roughly one measure in five. It is worse business for us and better advice, and it is the reason a good share of our work arrives by word of mouth.

  • Frame and sill sound, sashes solid — rebuild, do not replace
  • Interior storms get most of the gain without touching the original
  • Historic districts have rules; we tell you before you spend
  • Rot in the sill is a repair line, not a reason to replace nine windows

Common Questions

Before You Book a Measure

Why won't you give me a price over the phone?

Because it would be a guess, and a guess is what turns into a four-hour kitchen-table close later. Openings differ enormously — a full-frame in a rotten wall and an insert into a sound frame are different jobs at different prices. The measure takes an hour and the number that comes out of it is real.

Is a same-day discount ever legitimate?

Almost never. A price that drops thousands because you hesitated was not calculated from your house. If any company does this to you — us included — the correct response is to let it expire and see what happens.

Full-frame or insert — which do I need?

It depends entirely on the frame and sill, which is why we probe them. Insert is less money and keeps your interior trim, and it is the right answer when the frame is sound. Putting an insert over a rotten frame hides the rot and costs you the wall later.

How long from order to installed?

Usually eight to twelve weeks, and most of that is manufacture. Fitting is one to three days for most houses. We give you the manufacturer's date and tell you when it moves rather than quietly absorbing the delay.

Do new windows cause condensation?

They reveal it. Your house always made that moisture; the old leaky windows let it escape. Once the envelope is tight it shows on the coldest surface, which is the glass. Bath and kitchen extraction and some winter ventilation fix it — new windows are not the cause.

Is triple glazing worth it in Syracuse?

Sometimes. It helps most on north elevations and on rooms you feel cold in, and it is heavier so the install has to be right. On a well-sealed double-glazed install the marginal gain is smaller than the brochure implies, and we would rather put your money into air sealing first.

Do you do historic districts?

Yes, and often the answer there is restoration rather than replacement. We will tell you what the district allows before you spend anything, because a replacement you cannot get approved is worse than no quote.

Who does the actual installation?

Our own crew, and the person who measured is on it. We do not sell work and hand it to a subcontractor you have never met — most window failures are install failures, so this is the part we will not outsource.
