Our Story

A Levant You Can Hear Across the Room

Sumac & Signal is chef Rania Haddad's love letter to the Levantine table she grew up around in Beirut — big, loud, saturated, and endlessly generous. We make the dips and bread from scratch every day, grill over real charcoal, and pour wine from the region.

It's not terracotta-minimalist and it's not quiet. It's jewel colors, shared plates, and a room built for a party. Come with people, order more than you think you need, and let the table fill up.

  • Dips and bread made from scratch daily
  • Charcoal-grilled kebabs and kofta
  • Low-intervention wine from the region
  • Built for sharing, loudly

If You Only Order Four

You really shouldn't stop at four — but if someone made you, these are the ones the whole table fights over.

A bowl of hummus

The Hummus

Whipped for an age until it's pure silk, crowned with oil.

A red muhammara dip

The Muhammara

Roasted pepper and walnut, sweet-hot, pomegranate-dark.

Grilled lamb kofta skewers

The Lamb Kofta

Off the charcoal, spiced and juicy, with sumac onion.

A plate of knafeh dessert

The Knafeh

Warm cheese and crisp phyllo, syrup, a snow of pistachio.

How to Mezze

There's a Right Way to Do This

No courses, no rush, no one dish that's 'yours.' Here's how the table's supposed to work.

Order Generously

Aim for more plates than people. Half the joy is the abundance, and leftovers travel beautifully.

Share Everything

Nothing is one person's. Push it all to the middle, spin the plates, taste a bit of it all.

Use the Bread

The warm bread is a utensil. Tear it, scoop with it, ask for more — it's always free-flowing.

Stay a While

This is a long, loud meal, not a quick bite. Order another round of wine and let the night unspool.

The Word

DC's Most Joyful Table

The most joyful table in DC. Order too much — that's the point — and let the plates pile up: silky hummus, smoky baba, charred halloumi, kebabs off the coals. The bread comes out warm and never stops. We stayed three hours.

Every dip is made in-house and you can taste it — the muhammara alone is worth the trip. Bright, saturated, generous food and a room that feels like a party. The natural-wine list from the region is a lovely surprise.

Booked the family-style feast for a birthday of twelve and it was a parade of gorgeous plates — nobody had to decide anything. Warm, loud, delicious, and beautiful. Easily our new go-to for a celebration.

Gather the Whole Table

Reserve for dinner, or book the family-style feast for a group — we'll cover the table in mezze and keep the bread coming.

Good to Know

Before You Come

How does the mezze menu work?

It's all shared — order a handful of dishes for the table across cold, hot, and grilled, plus all the bread you like. Our servers will happily build a spread for your group if you want to leave it to us.

Is it good for vegetarians and vegans?

Wonderfully — a huge portion of the menu is plant-based, from the dips and falafel to the grilled vegetables. Vegan on request, and we'll steer you to the best of it.

Do I need a reservation?

For dinner and weekends, yes — the room fills up and it's a party. Book through the form below. The bar takes walk-ups for mezze and a glass when there's room.

Can you do the family-style feast for a group?

That's our favorite way to host — a set parade of mezze and grill for the whole table, priced per person. Send the headcount through the form and we'll design it.

Can you host a private event?

Yes — semi-private areas and full buyouts for celebrations, with a feast menu built around your group. Tell us the date and size through the form.

Where are you and where do I park?

1342 H Street NE in the heart of the H Street corridor, an easy walk from the streetcar, with street parking and a garage a couple of blocks over.
