Downtown LA's Cocktail Laboratory
Behind an unmarked door on 3rd Street, a rotating menu of experimental cocktails served in near-dark. No signage, no photos, no rush — just the drink in front of you.

Film Noir, Distilled into a Glass
Afterimage started when a bartender and a cinematographer got tired of loud rooms and bright menus. They wanted a bar that felt like the last reel of a noir — low light, long shadows, and a drink that lingers after you leave.
Everything here is built in-house: clarified punches, fat-washed spirits, house bitters and syrups made in a back room that looks more like a darkroom than a kitchen. The menu changes with what we're experimenting on. You won't find a signature list frozen in amber — you'll find tonight's.
- ✓Everything clarified, fat-washed, and made in-house
- ✓A menu that changes with the experiments
- ✓Near-dark rooms, long-shadow lighting
- ✓An unmarked door — you have to know
How a Night at Afterimage Unfolds
There's a small ritual to it. Here's what to expect from door to last call.
Find the Door
No sign, no marquee — an unmarked door on 3rd Street in the Arts District. Your reservation text has the details, and you're met, not queued.
Take the Seat
Low light, low volume, no photos. Settle in — the room is designed to make you forget the one outside.
Trust the Bartender
Tell them a spirit, a mood, or nothing at all. The best drink of your night usually isn't on the menu.

Every Drink Is an Experiment
The back room runs like a lab. We clarify with milk and centrifuge, fat-wash spirits with brown butter and smoked oils, ferment our own shrubs, and bottle bitters nobody else is making.
Our head bartender changes the menu every few weeks around whatever the team is chasing — a technique, a single mezcal, a memory of a drink from somewhere else. Sit at the bar and you can watch the whole thing happen.
- ✓House clarifications, ferments, and bitters
- ✓Menu rebuilt every few weeks
- ✓Fat-washed and barrel-rested spirits
- ✓Sit at the bar and watch it made
What They Whisper Afterward
You give a name at an unmarked door and step into the best cocktail of your life. The bartender asked two questions and built something I'm still thinking about a week later.
No menu photos, no line for the bathroom selfie — just extraordinary drinks in the dark. It feels like a secret you got let in on. The clarified milk punch is witchcraft.
Booked the back room for six and the team wrote us a custom flight around a single mezcal. Genuinely the most memorable night out we've had in LA.
Before You Reserve
How do I find the door?
It's unmarked, on 3rd Street in the Arts District. When you book, your confirmation text includes the exact entrance and a photo of the door so you're not wandering.
Do I need a reservation?
Almost always, yes — the room is small and books up. We release same-night tables at 6pm on our reservation page if any open up.
Is there a dress code?
No strict code. Come as you are, but most guests lean into the mood a little. The only real rule is phones down and flashes off.
Can I book the space for a private event?
Yes. The back room seats up to fourteen for custom flights, buyouts, and celebrations. Send the details through the form below and we'll design a night around it.
Do you have zero-proof options?
A full page of them, built with the same clarifications and ferments as everything else. Non-drinkers get the same experience, minus the ABV.
Where do I park?
There's a lot on the corner of 3rd and a valet stand Wed-Sat. Rideshare drops right at the door — just tell them 3rd and Traction.
The Door Opens at Seven
