Protective Styles, Perfected — Braids & Natural Hair in Houston
Kindred is Houston's home for braids and protective styles — knotless and box braids, cornrows, twists, sew-ins, and locs, done gently and with care for the health of your natural hair.
Braids & Protective Styles
Neat, gentle, long-lasting styles that protect your natural hair — done by master braiders who honor it.

Protective Styles That Actually Protect
A protective style is supposed to do exactly what the name says — protect your natural hair while it grows and rests. But too often, the reality is the opposite: braids installed so tight they cause pain, headaches, damaged edges, and even bald spots; parts that are sloppy; styles cranked out fast with no thought for the hair underneath. At Kindred, we were built to be everything those experiences are not. For twelve years, we've been Houston's home for braids and protective styles done the right way, by master braiders who genuinely honor natural hair and put its health first, always. Everything we do — knotless and box braids, cornrows and feed-ins, twists, sew-ins, and locs — is done gently, with a tension that protects your scalp and edges rather than stressing them, and with the patience and precision that neat, flawless parts and long-lasting styles require. We're honest about what your hair can handle, we never braid too tight to save time, and we take the health of your edges and scalp as seriously as the beauty of the finished style. Just as importantly, we send you home knowing how to care for your style and your natural hair underneath so it stays protected and thriving. But Kindred is more than technique — it's a warm, welcoming space that celebrates natural hair and feels like community, where you're never rushed and always cared for. Our clients come to us after bad experiences elsewhere and stay for years, because they finally have a braider who makes their hair gorgeous and keeps it healthy. Come sit with us, and let us take care of your crown.

Beautiful Now, Healthy for the Long Run
The whole point of a protective style is to let your natural hair rest and grow, safe from daily manipulation and the elements — but that only works if the style is installed and cared for correctly. Done wrong, with too much tension or left in too long, a 'protective' style can do real damage: thinning edges, traction alopecia, breakage, and a stressed scalp. At Kindred, protecting the long-term health of your hair is the non-negotiable foundation of everything we do, and it's what our clients trust us for most. We braid with a gentle tension that never pulls painfully on your edges or scalp, we're honest with you about what your hair can safely handle and how long a style should stay in, and we'll always choose the health of your hair over cranking out a tighter, faster, or longer-lasting look that could harm it. We prep your natural hair with care before every install, and we take the condition of your scalp and edges as seriously as the beauty of the braids. Just as importantly, we make sure you leave knowing how to care for your style and the hair underneath it — how to cleanse and moisturize your scalp, protect your hair at night, and recognize when it's time to take a style down or come in for maintenance. So many of our clients came to us after being burned elsewhere, with damaged edges and a fear of braids, and it means everything to us to rebuild their trust and their hair. When you leave Kindred, you don't just have a gorgeous style — you have healthy, protected, thriving natural hair underneath it. That's the promise, and we keep it every single time.

Braids & Protective Styles, Answered
Do you braid too tight? I've had damage before.
No — and if you've had painful, damaging braids before, please know that experience is exactly what we exist to prevent. Braids should never hurt, cause headaches, or leave you with thinning edges or bald spots, and the fact that this is so common is heartbreaking. At Kindred, gentle, edge-safe tension is a non-negotiable foundation of our work. Our master braiders are skilled at creating braids that are neat, secure, and long-lasting without ever pulling painfully on your scalp or edges — because a style that damages your hair isn't protective, no matter how it looks. We'll also be honest with you about what your hair and edges can safely handle, and we'll never braid tighter or add more weight than is healthy just to make a style last longer. If your edges are already stressed from past damage, we'll adjust our approach to protect and help them recover. You should leave feeling comfortable, not in pain, and confident that your natural hair is healthier for having come to us. Rebuilding the trust of clients who've been burned before, and seeing their edges grow back healthy, is some of the most meaningful work we do.
How long do braids and protective styles take, and how long do they last?
Time and longevity both depend on the style, and we'll always give you a clear estimate for both when you book. Installation time varies quite a bit: smaller, longer braids like small knotless or box braids take significantly longer than larger styles or cornrows, and a full head of intricate work is a real time investment — but that time is exactly what produces neat, flawless, long-lasting results, and we never rush it. We'll tell you roughly how long your chosen style will take so you can plan your day. As for how long a style lasts, most protective styles stay beautiful for several weeks, and we'll recommend the ideal window to keep yours in — long enough to get the full protective benefit and your money's worth, but not so long that it starts to stress your hair or edges, which is just as important. Leaving a style in too long is a common cause of damage, so we give you honest guidance on timing and when to come back for maintenance or a fresh install. Whatever style you choose, we'll set clear expectations up front on both the appointment length and how to get the most beautiful, healthy life out of it.
How should I care for my braids and my natural hair underneath?
Great aftercare is what keeps your style looking fresh and, more importantly, keeps your natural hair healthy underneath — and we make sure every client leaves knowing exactly how to do it. The essentials: keep your scalp clean and moisturized (yes, you can and should cleanse your scalp even in braids — we'll show you how), moisturize to prevent dryness and breakage, and protect your hair at night with a satin or silk scarf or bonnet to reduce frizz and friction and extend the life of your style. Avoid excessive tension from constantly pulling your braids into tight styles, be gentle around your edges, and resist the urge to keep a style in past its healthy window. We'll give you personalized guidance based on your specific style and hair — how often to cleanse and moisturize, which products help, and what to watch for — so caring for your hair feels simple rather than confusing. And we're always here between appointments if you have questions. Protecting your natural hair is a partnership, and the little bit of care you do at home makes a big difference in how healthy and beautiful your hair stays, style after style.
How does pricing work, and do you require a deposit?
Pricing depends on the style, its length and size, and how much work it involves — smaller braids and more intricate styles take more time and are priced accordingly — so we provide clear pricing when you book, with no surprises at the end. Because our braiders' time is in high demand and detailed styles take hours, we do ask for a deposit to secure your appointment, which goes toward the cost of your service; this reserves your braider exclusively for your time and helps us give every client our full, unhurried attention. You'll see all the details, including pricing for your chosen style and any prep or add-ons, when you book online, and we're always happy to answer questions beforehand so you know exactly what to expect. We also recommend coming in with your hair prepped as we advise (freshly washed and detangled unless we've arranged otherwise), which helps your appointment go smoothly and your style last. Great braiding by skilled hands that protect your hair is an investment, and we work to make sure it's absolutely worth it — a gorgeous style and healthy natural hair that lasts.
