The Studio

A Studio That Only Does Color — and Does It Right

Solstice was born from a simple frustration: too many salons treat color as an afterthought, rush the process, and hand you a result that looks great for a week and grows out into a hard line. We built something different — a dedicated color studio where balayage, blonding, and correction are the entire focus, not a sideline squeezed between blowouts. Every appointment begins with a real consultation, because the difference between good color and unforgettable color is the plan behind it. We look at your hair honestly, talk through what's realistic, and sometimes tell you the truth other salons won't — that the look you want is a two-session journey if we're going to protect the integrity of your hair. Our colorists hand-paint every balayage so the dimension is soft and the grow-out is seamless, we tone with an obsessive eye so blondes stay cool and brunettes stay rich, and we work in a calm, unhurried downtown space where you're a guest, not a number on a double-booked schedule. Eleven years in, our chairs are filled by referrals and people who drove past a dozen salons to get here — because when color is all you do, you get very, very good at it. Come sit down, and let's plan yours.

  • Color is our entire focus — never a sideline
  • Every service starts with a real consultation
  • Hand-painted for a soft, seamless grow-out
  • Calm, unhurried, by-appointment studio
Why Solstice

Color You Can Actually Live With

What a dedicated color studio does differently.

Hand-Painted, Not Cookie-Cutter

Every balayage is painted freehand to your face shape and lifestyle — dimension that looks natural and grows out soft.

An Obsessive Eye for Tone

Blondes that stay cool, brunettes that stay rich. We tone with precision so brassiness never sneaks in.

Hair Health First

We'll tell you the truth about what's realistic and split big changes across sessions to protect the integrity of your hair.

Low-Maintenance by Design

Your color is built to grow out beautifully, so you're not chained to the salon every three weeks.

Unhurried & Calm

By appointment only, never double-booked. Your time in the chair is yours — a genuine escape, not a conveyor belt.

Honest Consultations

We plan before we paint. You'll always know the realistic result, the maintenance, and the investment up front.

The Solstice Difference

Why Santa Barbara Trusts Us With Their Color

Three reasons our chairs stay full on referrals alone.

We Only Do Color

Balayage, blonding, and correction are our whole craft — not a service squeezed between haircuts. Focus makes the difference.

We Plan Before We Paint

An honest consultation and a real plan — sometimes across two visits — so the result lasts and your hair stays healthy.

We Paint for the Grow-Out

Hand-painted dimension designed to soften as it grows, so you look intentional for months, not just the day you leave.

Color Correction

Brought a Color Disaster? You're in the Right Chair.

Box dye that went green. A balayage from another salon that grew out into a harsh, brassy line. An ombré that's banded and uneven. If you're staring in the mirror at color you regret, take a breath — this is exactly what we're best at, and you will not be judged. Color correction is the most technical work a colorist does, and it's where eleven years of focused experience really shows. We start by understanding what's actually on your hair — every previous color, every attempt, what your hair can safely handle — and then we tell you the truth. Sometimes we can transform it in a single long session; often, if we're going to get you where you want to go without frying your hair, the honest answer is a planned journey across two visits with a treatment in between. We'll never over-promise to win the booking. What we will do is give you a clear plan, protect the health of your hair at every step, and get you to a color you love with integrity intact. Most of our correction guests tell us the same thing afterward: they wish they'd come here first. Bring us the disaster — we'll bring the fix.

  • Box dye, brassiness & banding — our specialty
  • An honest plan, never an over-promise
  • Hair health protected at every step
  • Most corrections come out better than the original goal

Good Questions

Color, Answered

How much does balayage cost, and why does color vary so much?

Every head of hair is different, so we price color after your consultation rather than from a rigid menu — but we'll always tell you the investment up front, before any work begins, so there are no surprises at checkout. What goes into the price is the length and density of your hair, how much dimension you want, whether we're lightening a lot or a little, and whether any correction is involved. Balayage is hand-painted, meticulous work, and a great result takes time and skill — that's what you're paying for, and it's why it lasts and grows out beautifully instead of needing a touch-up every three weeks. During your consultation we'll give you a clear quote for the plan we recommend, talk through maintenance costs like glosses so you can budget, and make sure the investment matches the result you want. We'd always rather be honest about cost than surprise you.

Why do you sometimes recommend two sessions instead of one?

Because the health of your hair matters more than a quick result, and there's a limit to how much we can safely lighten in a single day without compromising its integrity. If you're going from dark or previously-colored hair to a bright blonde, doing it all at once can leave hair damaged, brassy, and disappointing. By splitting a big transformation across two thoughtfully-planned sessions, we lift gradually, tone carefully, and protect your hair so the final result is not only the color you wanted but hair that still feels healthy and looks glossy. We know it's not the answer everyone wants to hear, and plenty of salons will promise the moon in one appointment to win your booking — but we'd rather tell you the truth and earn your trust. When a single session is genuinely the right call, we'll tell you that too. Either way, you'll leave with a clear plan.

Can you fix color from another salon or a box dye at home?

Yes — color correction is one of the things we do best, and it's a huge part of what we do. Whether it's box dye that turned an unexpected shade, a balayage that grew out harshly, brassiness that won't quit, or banding from repeated at-home color, we've very likely seen it before and fixed it. The most important thing to know is that you will never be judged here; we know how you ended up in the chair, and our only goal is to get you out of it happy. Correction is technical, so we'll start by carefully assessing everything that's on your hair, then give you an honest plan — sometimes one long session, sometimes a staged journey to protect your hair. Bring photos of both the problem and your goal if you have them. Most correction guests tell us afterward they wish they'd come to us first, and we take that as the highest compliment.

How do I keep my color looking fresh between appointments?

Great color is a partnership, and a little home care goes a long way toward protecting your investment. We'll send you off with a simple, personalized plan, but the essentials are: use a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and wash a little less often, since every wash gently fades tone; use a purple or blue toning product as we direct if you're blonde, to keep brassiness at bay; protect your hair from heat with a good thermal spray; and be mindful that sun, chlorine, and hard water can all shift your color. A gloss appointment every few weeks between full color services is the secret weapon — it refreshes tone and shine and dramatically extends the life of your balayage for a fraction of the cost. We'll recommend exactly the right products and timing for your specific color and lifestyle, so maintaining that just-left-the-salon look is genuinely easy.
