About Crown & Coil

Where Your Texture Is the Specialty, Not the Exception

For far too many people with curly, coily, and natural hair, the salon has been a place of frustration — stylists who don't understand texture, who reach for the flat iron because it's all they know, or who quietly make you feel like your hair is a problem to be managed. Crown & Coil was built to be the opposite of that. We are a dedicated curl studio, which means textured hair isn't a specialty we dabble in — it's the only thing we do, and we've spent ten years mastering it across every curl type from loose waves to tight coils. We cut curls dry and one at a time so we can see how your hair actually behaves, we treat and press and color with a deep respect for the health of your natural pattern, and just as importantly, we teach. So much of loving your natural hair is knowing how to care for it, and our stylists take the time to show you the products, the techniques, and the routine that will let your curls thrive between visits. Our clients — our curlfriends — come to us after years of feeling unseen, and they stay because for the first time they feel understood. Walking out wearing your natural texture with genuine pride is the whole point, and it's a feeling we get to give people every single day. Come sit in our chair and let us show you what your hair can do.

We Send You Home Knowing Your Hair

The most beautiful curly cut in the world won't help you much if you don't know how to care for it once you're home — and that's exactly why education is woven into everything we do at Crown & Coil. Natural hair thrives on knowledge: the right products for your specific porosity and pattern, the correct way to cleanse and condition, how to apply product to wet hair for definition, how to protect your curls while you sleep, and how to refresh them between wash days. Most people with textured hair were simply never taught any of this, because the mainstream beauty world spent decades ignoring their hair — so they've spent years frustrated, buying product after product that doesn't work and blaming themselves. We fix that. During and after your appointment, your stylist walks you through a routine built specifically for your curls, shows you the techniques hands-on so you can actually replicate them, and recommends only the products your hair genuinely needs — never a shelf of things to sell you. We want you to leave not just with gorgeous hair, but with the confidence and the know-how to recreate it yourself, wash day after wash day. Because when you truly understand your curls, caring for them stops being a battle and becomes a joy — and that quiet, everyday confidence is the most valuable thing we can give you.

  • Products matched to your porosity & pattern
  • Hands-on technique, so you can do it too
  • A real wash-day routine, not a sales pitch
  • Confidence to love your curls every day

Why Atlanta Trusts Us With Their Texture

For thirty years I let salons blow out and flat-iron my curls because no one knew what to do with them, and I left every appointment feeling like my natural hair was a problem to be fixed. Crown & Coil changed my entire relationship with my hair. My stylist cut my curls dry, curl by curl, taught me exactly how to care for them at home, and for the first time in my life I walked out wearing my natural texture with pride. I actually cried in the chair. This is so much more than a haircut.

I have tight 4C coils and I'm so tired of stylists who don't understand my hair or make me feel like it's difficult. At Crown & Coil I felt seen from the moment I walked in. They know coily and natural hair inside and out — my treatment left my hair the healthiest it's ever been, my twist-out was defined and gorgeous, and they never once made me feel like my texture was 'a lot.' Finally, a studio where my hair is the specialty, not the exception. I've found my forever salon.

I came in wanting a silk press for an event and nervous about heat damage, and my stylist was incredibly knowledgeable — she prepped and pressed my hair so it was sleek and bouncy and, most importantly, reverted right back to my curls afterward with zero damage. She clearly respects the health of natural hair above everything. The studio is warm and welcoming, the education is real, and I trust them completely. If you have textured hair in Atlanta, this is the place.

Good Questions

Curly Hair, Answered

Do you work with all curl and hair types?

Yes, absolutely — textured hair in all its beautiful variety is our entire specialty, and every curl type is genuinely welcome here. We work across the full spectrum, from loose 2A waves to springy 3-type curls to tight 4C coils, as well as locs and hair that's transitioning from chemical treatments back to its natural state. What unites all of it is that it's textured, and understanding texture is what we've spent ten years mastering. That means we don't have a 'default' hair type that we're comfortable with and everything else is a stretch; coily and kinky hair is not an exception we accommodate but a specialty we've studied deeply. Whether your hair is fine and wavy or dense and tightly coiled, whether you know your curl pattern by heart or have no idea what it even is, you'll be met by a stylist who sees your specific hair clearly and knows exactly how to care for it. If you've ever felt like your texture was 'too much' or 'too difficult' at other salons, that feeling ends the moment you sit in our chair.

Why do you cut curly hair dry instead of wet?

Cutting curly hair dry is one of the most important things a true curl specialist does, and it makes an enormous difference in the final result. Here's the thing about curls: when they're wet, they stretch out and lengthen dramatically, and different curls shrink up by different amounts as they dry. So if a stylist cuts your hair wet to a length that looks right in the mirror, it can spring up into something completely different — and often uneven — once it dries. By cutting your hair dry, in its natural curled state, we can see exactly how each curl behaves and falls, shape your hair curl by curl, balance the overall silhouette accurately, and place layers where they'll actually enhance your pattern. It's slower and more meticulous than a wet cut, but it's the only way to get a curly cut that looks intentional, grows out gracefully, and needs less daily fussing. It's a big part of why our clients tell us their hair finally 'behaves' — we shaped the curls you actually have, not a stretched-out version of them.

Will a silk press damage my natural hair?

Not when it's done correctly by someone who respects the health of natural hair, which is exactly how we approach every press. A silk press is a beautiful way to enjoy smooth, sleek, bouncy hair temporarily while keeping the ability to return to your natural curls — but it absolutely must be done with care, because heat used improperly is the main cause of heat damage, where curls no longer revert. We protect your hair at every step: we start with proper cleansing and a nourishing treatment, we always use a quality heat protectant, we use the right temperature for your specific hair rather than cranking the heat, and we press with skill and the minimum passes needed for a lasting result. Done this way, your hair comes out silky and swingy, and when you're ready to wash it, your curls come right back exactly as they were, with no damage. We'll also give you honest guidance on how often pressing is safe for your hair and how to maintain the style so it lasts. Protecting your natural pattern always comes first — a gorgeous press is never worth compromising the curls underneath.

I don't know how to care for my curls — can you help?

Helping you understand and care for your own hair is honestly one of our favorite parts of the job, and it's a core part of every appointment — you are absolutely in the right place. So many people with textured hair were never taught how to care for it, spent years frustrated, and concluded that their hair was 'difficult' when really they just never had the right information. We change that. Your visit starts with a real consultation where we assess your curl pattern, porosity, and the condition of your hair, and it ends with education tailored specifically to you: which products your hair genuinely needs (and which you can skip), how to cleanse and condition, the right way to apply product for definition, how to protect your curls overnight, and how to refresh them between wash days. We show you the techniques hands-on so you can actually do them yourself at home, not just watch us do them. Our goal is for you to leave with beautiful hair and the genuine confidence and know-how to recreate it. Caring for your curls should feel joyful, not like a battle you keep losing — and we'll give you everything you need to win it.
