How Much Battery Do You Need?
Rules of thumb for a typical Fort Myers home, with solar to recharge. Without solar, a battery still covers a short outage but won't carry you for days. We size yours from your own usage before you commit to anything.
One Battery

The grid went down on a Wednesday night and came back the following Monday. We had the fridge, the fans, the Wi-Fi and my husband's CPAP the whole time, and the panels filled the batteries back up every afternoon. The street was dark. We weren't.
We already had solar from another company and assumed a battery meant starting over. Keelhaven added two batteries to the system we had, mounted them high in the garage above the flood line, and handled the city and LCEC paperwork.

Batteries, Solar And Storms
Is a battery better than a generator?
Different jobs. A generator runs as long as you have fuel and can be noisy and needs maintenance; a battery is silent, switches over automatically and recharges from your roof, but it has a set amount of stored energy. Many of our customers had a generator first and now only start it if a cloudy outage runs long.
How long does a home battery last?
Most carry a manufacturer warranty of around ten years, and they're built to keep a large share of their capacity through that period. We register the warranty for you and handle any claim.
Can you add a battery to the solar I already have?
Usually, yes — even if another company installed it. Standard grid-tied systems switch off in an outage for safety, so on its own your existing solar won't help when the grid is down. Adding a battery and the right equipment changes that.
Is there still a federal tax credit for solar and batteries?
Not for homeowners who buy their system. The 30% federal credit for home solar and batteries ended for systems installed after 2025. We'll tell you what else your home qualifies for on the day you ask, including when that's nothing.
Will my panels survive a hurricane?
Panels and racking installed in Florida are engineered and permitted for local wind-load requirements, and we install to them. No roof item is storm-proof, which is why we inspect systems after a major storm on request.
What about flooding?
We never mount batteries or backup equipment at floor level in a flood-prone garage. Equipment goes above your home's flood elevation — high on the wall or on a raised pad — and we'll show you where before we drill anything.
When should I get this done before hurricane season?
Spring. Permits and utility approval typically take a few weeks, and our install calendar fills up from May. If you call in August we'll still help, but you may be waiting through part of the season.
