How much is a cord of firewood, and what is a cord?
A full cord is a specific, legally-defined amount of firewood: a stacked pile measuring 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet, or 128 cubic feet. It's important because a lot of sellers quietly deliver less than a full cord (using vague terms like 'face cord' or 'rick,' or just loose truckloads that don't measure up). We deliver honest, full cords, measured properly, so you always get exactly what you pay for. What does 'seasoned' firewood really mean?
Seasoned firewood is wood that has been dried until its moisture content is low enough to burn well — generally under about 20%. Freshly cut ('green') wood can be half water by weight, and it simply won't burn properly: it's hard to light, smokes heavily, burns cool, and coats your chimney with creosote. Proper seasoning takes many months of drying split, stacked wood with good airflow. The catch is that a lot of wood sold as 'seasoned' isn't actually dry enough, which is exactly the problem we built our business to solve. Our wood is genuinely seasoned and ready to burn.
How can I tell if firewood is properly dry?
There are a few reliable signs. Dry wood is noticeably lighter than green wood of the same size, because the water has left it. Its cut ends will have darkened and developed cracks (called 'checking') radiating out from the center. And when you knock two pieces together, well-seasoned wood makes a sharp, hollow, almost musical crack, while wet wood gives a dull thud. Green wood also often looks pale and fresh at the ends and may smell sappy. Every load we deliver passes these tests — we encourage you to check.
Do you deliver, and will you stack it?
