Anyone Can Trim. Shaping Is Different.
There's a world of difference between hacking a hedge into a rough box and truly shaping it — crisp, level lines, proper tapering so it stays full to the ground, and cuts that keep the plant healthy rather than stressed. Most garden crews do the former. We do the latter.
Greenshear specializes in the shaping work that makes a garden look intentional: dead-straight hedges, thoughtfully-pruned shrubs, and the patient, detailed care that topiary and formal ornamentals demand. We understand how each plant grows, we cut for both form and health, and we leave your garden immaculate. Since 2013, San Diego's most cared-for gardens have trusted us to keep their lines crisp and their plants thriving.

Why Shaping Deserves a Specialist
A rough trim job is obvious, and it's hard to undo. Here's why San Diego's cared-for gardens trust the details to us.

Level, straight, and even — we take the time and use the technique to cut hedges that actually look designed.
We Cut for Health
Proper tapering and correct cuts keep plants full to the ground and thriving, not stressed and thinning out.

Topiary, specimen shrubs, and fine ornamentals need patience and experience. That detailed work is our specialty.

On a schedule, your garden stays consistently crisp — no long stretches of overgrowth between visits.
Fully Insured & Bonded
$1M coverage and careful crews who protect your plants, beds, and hardscape while we work.
Immaculate Cleanup
Every clipping gone, beds blown clean. A shaped garden should look finished, and we leave it that way.
The Details That Make a Garden Look Intentional
The difference between a rough shear and real shaping is in the details — and it's the difference your garden shows off.
Straight, Level, Tapered
We string lines and taper properly, so hedges are crisp on top and full at the base — not bulging, bare-bottomed boxes.
Shaped for the Plant
We work with each plant's natural growth and flowering habit, so shaping keeps it healthy, not just tidy for a week.
Patience for the Fine Work
Topiary and ornamentals get slow, careful, experienced hands — the kind of detail work most crews rush or refuse.
A Finished Look
Immaculate cleanup so the whole garden reads as designed and cared-for — the details are the entire point.

Immaculate Finish

A Crisp Garden Is a Maintained Garden
The secret to a garden that always looks its best isn't one dramatic cleanup — it's consistency. Hedges and shrubs grow steadily, and a garden that's shaped and then left for six months slowly loses its crisp lines and starts to look shaggy and neglected, no matter how good it looked the day it was cut.
That's why our happiest clients keep us on a regular maintenance schedule tailored to how their plants grow and the look they want. It means your garden stays consistently sharp all year, small problems get caught early, and the plants stay healthier for the steady, correct care. Whether it's a one-time reshape or ongoing maintenance, we'll set up whatever keeps your garden looking exactly how you want it.
- ✓Consistency keeps lines crisp year-round
- ✓Schedules tailored to your plants
- ✓Small issues caught early
- ✓One-time reshape or ongoing care
San Diego's Gardens Trust Our Shears
Our long boxwood hedges frame the whole front garden and they need to be crisp — a wavy, uneven hedge ruins the entire look. Greenshear cuts perfect, dead-straight lines every time, tapers them properly so they stay full at the bottom, and leaves not a clipping behind. Our garden has never looked so intentional.
We inherited a garden full of overgrown, shapeless shrubs and had no idea what to do with them. Greenshear's team saw the good bones underneath, pruned them back thoughtfully over a couple of visits, and now they're gorgeous, healthy, and shaped. They clearly understand plants, not just clippers. A joy to work with.
We have a few topiary pieces and formal ornamentals that most gardeners are afraid to touch. Greenshear maintains them beautifully — precise, patient, and clearly experienced with fine ornamental work. The spirals and cones look immaculate. It's rare to find someone with this level of care and skill for detailed shaping.

Hedge & Shrub Care Questions, Answered
How often should hedges and shrubs be trimmed?
It depends on the plant and the look you want, but most formal hedges benefit from trimming two to three times during the growing season to stay crisp, while informal hedges and many shrubs are fine with once or twice a year. Fast growers like privet need more frequent attention than slow ones like boxwood. The most important thing for a sharp look is consistency — a hedge trimmed on a regular schedule always looks better than one cut hard once a year. We'll recommend the right rhythm for your specific plants.
My hedge is overgrown and bare at the bottom. Can it be fixed?
Usually, yes — though it may take a little patience. A hedge that's gone bare at the bottom is often the result of being cut straight up and down instead of tapered, so the top shades out the base. We can reshape it with proper tapering so light reaches the lower growth again, and for badly overgrown or bare hedges we sometimes stage the work over a couple of visits to reshape it without shocking the plant. In most cases we can bring a neglected hedge back to full, crisp health.
Do you do topiary and detailed ornamental shaping?
Yes — it's one of our specialties and one of the things clients seek us out for. Spirals, cones, balls, cloud-pruning, and formal ornamentals require patience, a good eye, and real experience, and it's detailed work most general garden crews would rather avoid. We genuinely enjoy it and have the skill for it, whether it's maintaining existing topiary or shaping new pieces. If you have fine ornamental work that needs a careful hand, we're exactly who to call.
Will trimming hurt my shrubs or make them flower less?
Not when it's done correctly — in fact, proper pruning improves both health and flowering. The key is knowing each plant: some shrubs flower on new growth and some on old, so the timing and technique of the cut matter a lot for whether you get blooms. This is exactly where the difference between a specialist and a general crew shows up. We prune with each plant's growth and flowering habit in mind, so shaping keeps your shrubs healthy and blooming, not bare.
Do you clean up all the clippings?
Always, and thoroughly. Trimming hedges and shrubs produces a surprising amount of clippings, and hauling all of it away is part of every job. We rake, bag, and blow the beds and paths clean so your garden looks finished when we leave — often tidier than before we started. A crisp shaping job with clippings left everywhere isn't a finished job, and we treat cleanup as part of the work, never an extra.
Do you offer regular maintenance schedules?
Yes, and it's how most of our clients work with us. A regular schedule — tailored to your specific plants and the look you want — keeps your garden consistently crisp all year, catches small issues early, and keeps the plants healthier for the steady, correct care. It also means you never have to remember to call; we just keep your garden looking its best. We're happy to set up whatever rhythm fits your garden and your preferences.
