About Frond & Fan

The Valley's Palms Deserve a Specialist

Palms are what make Phoenix look like Phoenix — but caring for them is nothing like caring for an ordinary shade tree. Different varieties need different trimming, they're prone to their own diseases and deficiencies, and climbing a sixty-foot Mexican fan palm safely is a genuine skill.

That's why we do palms and only palms. Since 2009 Frond & Fan has trimmed, skinned, treated, and removed more than forty thousand of them across the Valley — queen, date, pygmy, sago, and towering fan palms. We know how to make each one healthy and beautiful, we climb and rig safely, and we clean up every last frond. When your palms are the star of your yard, you want the specialists.

  • Palm specialists — it's all we do
  • Every variety, from queen to fan
  • 40,000+ palms serviced since 2009
  • Safe climbing & spotless cleanup
Why Frond & Fan

Why Palms Need a Palm Specialist

Palm care is its own craft. Here's why Valley homeowners trust their palms to us instead of a general tree crew.

Palms Are All We Do

We're not a tree company that also does palms — palms are our entire business, and that focus shows in every trim.

We Know the Varieties

Queen, date, fan, pygmy, sago — each needs different care. We know exactly what yours needs and when.

We Catch Palm Diseases Early

Nutrient deficiencies and palm diseases show in the fronds. We spot and treat them before they kill the tree.

Safe, Insured Climbing

Climbing tall palms is high, dangerous work. We're fully insured and rig every climb safely, protecting you and your property.

We Lower Fire Risk

Dead, dry fronds and skirts are a real fire hazard in the desert. Proper trimming keeps your palms — and home — safer.

Resort-Quality Results

Clean cuts, smooth skinning, and immaculate cleanup that make your palms — and your whole yard — look like a resort.

The Frond & Fan Difference

There's a Right Way to Care for a Palm

Bad palm work is everywhere in the Valley — over-trimmed 'hurricane cuts', missed diseases, unsafe climbs. Here's how we do it right.

We Don't Over-Trim

Cutting too many green fronds ('hurricane cutting') stresses and slowly kills a palm. We trim for health, not just looks.

We Read the Fronds

Frond color and pattern reveal a palm's health. We catch nutrient deficiencies and disease early, when they're treatable.

We Climb Safely

Tall palms demand proper rigging and skill. Our insured climbers work safely, protecting your property and themselves.

We Leave It Immaculate

Every frond, pod, and piece of debris hauled away. Your property looks better when we leave than when we arrived.

Your Palm's Fronds Are Trying to Tell You Something

The single most common mistake in palm care is treating them like ordinary trees — and the second is missing the warning signs a palm shows before it's in real trouble. Yellowing or frizzled fronds, an off-color crown, spotting, a thinning canopy: these are a palm telling you something's wrong, and by the time most people notice, a treatable problem has become a lost tree.

We read those signs for a living. On every visit our specialists check your palms for the nutrient deficiencies and diseases that are common in our desert soils and climate, and if we catch something, we can usually treat it. Keeping a palm healthy is far cheaper and easier than replacing a mature one — and it starts with someone who actually knows what to look for.

  • We check every palm's health on each visit
  • Nutrient deficiencies caught early
  • Desert palm diseases identified & treated
  • Saving palms before it's too late

The Valley Trusts Us With Its Palms

Our two towering Mexican fan palms hadn't been trimmed in years and were a fire risk with all the dead fronds. Frond & Fan climbed them, cleaned them up beautifully, and shaped them so they finally look like the postcard palms they should be. Fast, safe, and they hauled every frond away. Total pros.

I had no idea our queen palms were suffering from a nutrient deficiency until Frond & Fan's guy pointed it out and set up a treatment plan. They knew exactly what was wrong from the frond color. Six months later they're lush and green again. These folks genuinely know palms, not just trees.

We wanted our palms skinned to that clean, smooth pineapple look and Frond & Fan did it perfectly on all six. The difference is night and day — the whole yard looks like a resort now. Careful work, fair price, and spotless cleanup. I've already recommended them to half the neighborhood.

Good to Know

Palm Care Questions, Answered

How often should palm trees be trimmed?

For most palms in the Valley, once a year is ideal — usually in late spring or early summer after they've bloomed. That keeps dead fronds, seed pods, and fire risk under control without over-trimming. Some fast growers or messy fruiting varieties benefit from twice a year. The most important thing is not trimming too aggressively: cutting off healthy green fronds to make a palm look 'clean' actually stresses and weakens it. We'll recommend the right schedule for your specific palms.

What is palm skinning, and does my palm need it?

Skinning (sometimes called shaving or diamond-cutting) is the process of carefully removing the old, dry frond bases (bootjacks) from the trunk to reveal a smooth, clean surface — often in that classic 'pineapple' or diamond pattern near the crown. It's purely cosmetic, but it gives palms a manicured, resort-quality look and removes habitat for pests. Not every palm can or should be skinned, and it has to be done carefully to avoid damaging the trunk. We'll tell you honestly whether yours is a good candidate.

How do I know if my palm is sick?

Palms show their health in their fronds and crown. Warning signs include yellowing, browning, or frizzled fronds (especially the newer ones), a discolored or collapsing crown, spotting, an unusually thin canopy, or a palm that just seems to be declining. Many of these come from nutrient deficiencies that are common in our desert soils, or from diseases — and many are treatable if caught early. If your palm looks off, it's worth having a specialist take a look sooner rather than later.

Can you remove a very tall palm safely?

Yes — safe removal of tall palms is one of the things we specialize in. Palms can reach sixty feet or more, and taking one down safely near homes, walls, and pool decks takes proper climbing, rigging, and often sectional removal. Our crews are fully insured and experienced at exactly this. We'll assess the palm and its surroundings and remove it cleanly and safely, right down to the stump if you'd like.

Why hire a palm specialist instead of a regular tree service?

Because palms genuinely are different. They're a completely different type of plant from broadleaf trees, with their own growth habits, their own diseases and deficiencies, their own trimming needs, and their own climbing challenges. A general tree crew often over-trims palms, misses the diseases specific to them, or isn't set up to climb them safely. We work on palms every single day, so we know exactly how to keep yours healthy, safe, and beautiful.

Do you clean up all the fronds and debris?

Always, completely. Palm work produces a lot of debris — fronds, seed pods, trimmings — and hauling all of it away is part of every job. We rake and blow the area clean and leave your property looking immaculate, often tidier than we found it. A clean finish is never an extra with us; it's just how we work.
