About Groundout

Grinding Is All We Do — So We Do It Right

Most tree companies treat stump grinding as an afterthought — a slow, messy add-on they'd rather skip. We built Groundout to do the opposite: grinding is our whole business, and it shows.

We run the right machines for every situation, from big self-propelled grinders for open yards to compact units that squeeze through a garden gate. We grind well below grade so stumps never come back, chase down the surface roots, and clean up so thoroughly you're left with plantable dirt, not a crater full of chips. Fourteen thousand stumps later, Denver knows who to call when they just want the thing gone.

  • Grinding is our whole business
  • The right machine for any stump
  • Below grade, roots and all
  • Spotless, plantable cleanup
Why Grind It

Why That Stump Needs to Go

A leftover stump is more than an eyesore. Here's why grinding it out is worth it — and why Denver trusts us to do it.

It's a Tripping Hazard

Stumps hidden in the grass are a genuine hazard for kids, guests, and mowers. Grinding removes the risk entirely.

It Attracts Pests

Rotting stumps draw termites, carpenter ants, and beetles — right next to your home. Grinding takes away the invitation.

It Can Regrow

Many stumps send up persistent sprouts and suckers. Grinding below grade stops regrowth for good.

You Get the Space Back

That's reclaimed ground for a garden bed, new sod, a patio, or just a clean, mowable lawn.

Insured & Careful

$1M coverage and careful operators who protect your lawn, fences, and irrigation while we work.

No Mess Left Behind

We don't just grind and go — we clean up the grindings and leave your yard better than we found it.

The Groundout Difference

Not All Stump Grinding Is the Same

The difference between a quick surface grind and a job done right shows up the first time you try to plant there.

1

We Grind Deep

Well below grade, not just a token surface pass — so the stump is gone for good and won't sprout back.

2

We Chase the Roots

Surface roots get ground out too, so you're left with a genuinely clear, plantable area — not a hidden root maze.

3

We Reach the Tough Ones

Compact grinders and skilled operators reach stumps in tight, awkward spots that stop other companies.

4

We Clean Up Completely

Grindings hauled or spread, hole backfilled, area raked. You get clean ground, not a pile of chips to deal with.

What You Get Back

A Clean Slate Where the Stump Used to Be

A stump takes up more than physical space — it's the thing you mow around, the eyesore in the photos, the spot you can't quite use. Grinding it out gives all of that back.

Once we're done, you've got clean, level, plantable ground where a stubborn stump used to sit. Put in that garden bed you've been wanting, lay fresh sod, extend the patio, or just enjoy a lawn you can mow in a straight line. It's a small job that makes a surprisingly big difference — and we make it easy and affordable to finally check off the list.

  • Clean, level, plantable ground
  • Room for a garden, sod, or patio
  • No more mowing around it
  • An eyesore finally gone

Denver's Stumps, Handled

We had four ugly old stumps left behind by another company's removal and they'd been tripping hazards for years. Groundout ground every one below grade in a single afternoon, cleaned up all the grindings, and left us flat, plantable dirt. Fast, fairly priced, and the yard finally looks whole again.

A huge cottonwood stump was right up against our foundation and I figured it'd be a nightmare to deal with. Groundout got their machine in, ground it and the surface roots out completely, and you'd never know it was there. Careful, clean, and way more affordable than I expected. Highly recommend.
Marcus FeldmanHard-to-Reach Stump, Highlands
I just wanted one stump gone so I could put in a garden bed. Groundout came out, quoted it on the spot, ground it below grade, and raked the whole area clean. No mess, no fuss, done in under an hour. It's rare to find a company that makes a small job this easy.

We're landscapers and use Groundout for all our stump work now. They show up on schedule, grind clean and deep every time, and clean up so we can get right to planting. Reliable, insured, and the pricing makes it easy to fold into our own quotes. A genuinely great subcontractor.

Good to Know

Stump Grinding Questions, Answered

How much does stump grinding cost?

It mostly comes down to the size of the stump (its diameter), how many you have, and how hard it is to reach. A single small stump in an open yard is inexpensive; a big cottonwood against your foundation or a whole yard of stumps costs more. The good news is we quote clearly and upfront — often right from a photo — so you know exactly what it'll be with no surprises, and multiple stumps get a better per-stump price.

What's the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Stump grinding uses a machine to chip the stump down well below ground level, leaving the roots to decay naturally underground — it's faster, less invasive, and cheaper, and it's the right choice for most situations. Full stump removal physically extracts the entire stump and root ball, which leaves a large hole and is more disruptive, but is sometimes needed if you're building or excavating there. We do both and will recommend the right one for your plans.

How deep do you grind the stump?

We grind well below grade — typically 6 to 12 inches below the surface, deeper if you're planning to plant or lay sod there. Grinding this deep is what actually stops the stump from sprouting back and gives you genuinely usable ground. We also grind out the surface roots radiating from the stump, which is the part a lot of companies skip. Just tell us what you plan to do with the spot and we'll grind to suit.

Will grinding the stump damage my lawn?

We take real care not to. Our operators protect the surrounding grass, and modern grinders are surprisingly tidy for the work they do. There's inevitably some disturbance right at the stump itself, but we clean up thoroughly, backfill the hole, and leave the area raked and ready to reseed or sod. For tight spots we use compact machines that minimize any impact on the rest of your yard.

What happens to all the wood chips and grindings?

That's up to you. The grinding produces a pile of wood chips (mulch, essentially), and we're happy to spread it back into the hole as backfill, spread it as mulch elsewhere in your yard if you'd like, or haul it away entirely. Just let us know your preference. Either way, we don't leave a mess — cleanup is part of every job.

Can you grind stumps in tight or awkward spots?

Usually, yes — it's one of the things we're known for. We run compact, narrow-access grinders that can fit through a standard garden gate and work in tight side yards, close to foundations and fences, and other awkward spots that stop bigger machines. If a stump is in a tricky location, send us a photo and we'll tell you honestly whether we can reach it (we almost always can).
