About Wexcombe

Writing Is Thinking On Paper

Most students who struggle with writing aren't bad writers. They haven't been shown how to get from an idea to a plan to a paragraph. That's what we teach, one draft at a time, using the work your student already has due.

Our tutors are former English teachers and working writers. They coach, ask questions and mark up drafts. They never write a sentence for your student, and neither does any AI.

How A Draft Comes Together

Three Steps, Every Essay

Talk It Through

We start with a conversation, not a blank page, and turn the best ideas into an outline.

Write And Mark Up

Your student writes the draft; we mark it up together and talk about every comment.

One sentence that says what the essay will prove.

Structure

Paragraphs that each do one job, in an order that makes sense.

Evidence

Quotes and examples that support the point, explained in the student's words.

Voice

Writing that sounds like a real person, not a list of rules.

Revision

Reading a draft with fresh eyes and making it better, not just longer.

Grammar in context

Fixing the mistakes that show up in your own work, not in drills.

What Families Say

★★★★★
My son used to stare at a blank page for an hour. His tutor taught him to talk his ideas through first and outline from there. His last history essay came back with a note from his teacher: "Clear, organized and convincing." He read it out loud to us twice.
Rebecca L.Parent, 8th grade, The Fan
★★★★★
I had three supplemental essays due in a month and no idea how to make them different. We found a story for each one, and every sentence still sounds like me.
Jordan P.Student, 12th grade, Midlothian
★★★★★
Grammar was always my daughter's weak spot. A few months of short, focused sessions and her English grade went from a C to a B+.

Essays Done On Time

When writing is hard, homework gets left until the last minute and evenings turn tense. Weekly sessions break each assignment into steps, so the outline is done on Tuesday and the draft on Thursday.

You'll get a short note after every session, and you're always welcome to read your student's drafts with them.

  • ✓A note after every session

Questions

What Families Ask

How much does a writing tutor cost?

$70 an hour, or $260 a month for four weekly sessions. The college essay package is $1,200. The first writing review is free.

Is there a contract?

No. Pay by the session or by the month, and pause or stop any time.

Do you write or edit essays for students?

We never write for students, and we don't use AI to draft anything. We ask questions, mark up drafts and explain every comment, so the student makes the changes.

What grades do you work with?

Grades 6 to 12 and college students. College essay coaching is for high school seniors and transfer applicants.

Will my child's grade go up?

Most students write more clearly within a few weeks, and grades often follow, but no tutor can promise a grade.

In person or online?

Either. Our studio is on Larkhollow Street in the Fan, and online sessions use a shared document.
