What is an image gallery for a website?

An image gallery for a website is a structured block that displays multiple photos in a designed layout — grid, masonry, slideshow, before-and-after — so visitors can browse the work, the products, the venue or the team without scrolling through a long page of single images.

Zarla is an AI website builder for small business owners. Describe your business in one sentence and Zarla generates a complete, professional website in about 30 seconds — and the image gallery is one of the blocks the AI picks, fills and styles for you, automatically. No widget to embed. No plugin to install. No separate Pixieset or Wix Pro Gallery subscription on top of your site.

The AI looks at your trade and picks the layout that fits — a photographer gets a fullbleed slideshow with Ken Burns zoom; a salon gets a tight 3-column grid; a restaurant gets masonry; a kitchen renovator gets before-and-after. Every layout is mobile-first, swipeable on touch, and respects prefers-reduced-motion for visitors with vestibular sensitivities.

Six layouts

One block. Six ways to show your work.

Zarla's AI picks the layout that fits your trade. Switch to any of the others in one click — your photos stay put.

Slideshow

Full-bleed, ~78vh, autoplay with Ken Burns slow zoom and a 0.9s opacity crossfade. Editorial caption bottom-left, pill dots, counter, progress bar. Auto-picked for photographers, wedding planners, boutique hotels.

Masonry

Natural-aspect tiles stack like a Pinterest board — landscapes, portraits and squares all keep their proportions. Auto-picked for restaurants, fine art and travel.

Grid (3 or 4 columns)

Equal-aspect grid — the classic portfolio layout. Three columns reads cinematic; four reads catalog. Auto-picked for salons, designers, retail.

Justified rows

Each row fills the width with mixed-aspect images, aligned edge-to-edge. The newspaper-photo-essay shape. Auto-picked for editorial and architecture portfolios.

Before & after

Two images, draggable divider, one comparison. Auto-picked for renovators, dentists, dermatology, landscapers, anyone who shows a transformation.

Team

Photo + name + role + short bio per card — the team-page treatment. Lives in the same Gallery block; one schema, six visual answers.

Instant

Premium slideshow

The full-bleed slideshow most builders charge extra for.

What you'd pay for as a Wix Pro Gallery upgrade or a Squarespace add-on. In Zarla, it's the default.

Ken Burns slow zoom

Each active slide slowly scales from 1.0 → 1.04 over 8 seconds — the cinematic effect documentary makers use to give still images motion. Honors <code>prefers-reduced-motion</code>.

0.9s opacity crossfade

Slides crossfade with a cubic-bezier curve tuned for editorial pacing — no jarring slide-right, no fade-to-black. Just a soft transition between scenes.

Autoplay + pause on hover

6-second per-slide autoplay on desktop, pauses on hover or keyboard focus so visitors can read captions without the rug pulling out from under them.

Touch swipe on mobile

Native swipe gesture with a ~50px threshold — the same swipe that scrolls Instagram. Arrows hidden on touch screens; dots stay for tap navigation.

Pill dots, counter, progress bar

Editorial nav UI in the corners — pill-shaped dots expand from 24px → 40px on the active slide, an <code>01 / 05</code> counter top-right, a 2px progress bar at the foot.

Lazy-loaded + preload next

Slide 1 loads eager with <code>&lt;link rel=preload&gt;</code>; slides 2-N lazy-load on scroll. When you change slides, Zarla preloads the next one so the crossfade is always instant.

Why it's different

More than just another photo gallery widget.

AI picks the layout for your trade

A photographer gets a slideshow. A salon gets a grid. Zarla knows the difference.

Wix and Squarespace hand you six layouts and a shrug. Pick one. Hope it's right. Zarla looks at your trade — wedding photographer, salon, boutique hotel — and picks the layout that converts visitors into bookings for that specific industry. Don't like the pick? Switch to any of the other five in one click. Your photos stay put.

Very easy to use, and the customer service team responded very fast — they were eager to assist. I'd used a different company before, spent a bunch of money and got nothing. I gave this a try and so far I'm glad I did.

Image gallery for website — common questions

What is a photo gallery in a website?

A photo gallery in a website is a designed section that displays multiple images in a structured layout — grid, masonry, slideshow, before-and-after — instead of a long single-column stack. Galleries make a portfolio, product set, team page or venue tour scannable in seconds and tell a stronger visual story than the same images rendered one-after-another.

How do I create a photo gallery for my website?

On a Zarla site, you describe your business, the AI picks the right gallery layout for your trade and fills it with industry-real photos, and you publish. The whole flow takes under a minute. You don't write code, embed a widget, install a plugin or subscribe to a separate gallery tool — the Gallery block is built in, free to use, and the AI handles layout choice automatically.

What's the best image gallery for a website?

The best gallery depends on your trade. Photographers and wedding planners do best with a full-bleed slideshow; restaurants and fine art with masonry; salons and designers with a 3- or 4-column grid; renovators and dentists with before-and-after. Zarla's AI picks the right one for your business automatically — you don't have to guess.

Is the Zarla image gallery free?

Yes. Building the gallery — generating layouts, uploading photos, previewing on desktop and mobile, switching between the six variants — is free with no credit card. You only pay when you're ready to publish to a real domain — current plans are on the pricing page.

How is Zarla different from Wix Pro Gallery, Squarespace or Pixieset?

Three differences. (1) Zarla's AI picks the gallery layout for your trade automatically — Wix, Squarespace and Pixieset hand you a picker and a shrug. (2) The premium slideshow (Ken Burns, crossfade, pill dots, progress bar) is the default in Zarla; Wix Pro Gallery is a $300/yr upgrade, Squarespace requires custom CSS or an extension. (3) Zarla's gallery is part of every site at no extra charge — Pixieset costs $96–$300/yr on top of whatever you're paying for your site.

How many photos can I add to a Zarla gallery?

There's no per-gallery photo cap on Zarla. The default Gallery block ships with five slides for the slideshow variant and six tiles for grid/masonry, but you can add or remove items by typing what you want changed ("add a tenth photo", "swap photo three for this new shot"). Practical limit: page-load performance starts to matter past about 50 images, so we'll automatically lazy-load anything below the fold.

Does the slideshow autoplay on mobile?

Yes, but with two adaptations. Autoplay continues on mobile because the slideshow IS the story for visual-portfolio sites, but the per-slide interval is the same 6s as desktop. Navigation arrows are hidden on touch screens — visitors swipe left/right instead, which is the gesture they already use on Instagram. Pill-shaped dots stay visible for tap navigation.

Is the gallery accessible?

Yes. Every Gallery layout respects prefers-reduced-motion — visitors with vestibular sensitivities get autoplay disabled, the Ken Burns animation removed, and crossfade replaced with instant slide swap. Captions and alt text are required fields; tab-keyboard navigation works for the slideshow arrows and dots; focus states are visible on every interactive element.

Can I switch gallery layouts without losing my photos?

Yes. Layout choice is a presentation decision; your photos live in the schema independently. Type "switch to grid" or "try the masonry layout" in the editor — Zarla swaps the layout and your photos render in the new arrangement. No re-uploading, no re-cropping, no starting over.

Will my gallery rank in Google Image Search?

Yes — and that matters more than most builders pretend. Every gallery image carries alt text written by AI (which you can edit), proper <img> tags with width/height attributes, lazy-loading hints for the images-below-fold, and the ImageObject structured data Google Image Search uses to rank. For visual-portfolio trades like photography and interior design, image search traffic is a serious lead source.
