AI VISIBILITY GUIDE
How to show up in Google AI Overviews — straight from Google's own rulebook
Google published official guidance on appearing in its AI features, and it says something most agencies won't: there are no special requirements. Here's that guidance translated into plain English for a local business — what AI Overviews and AI Mode actually reward, what to skip, and how to check where you stand.

THE PRIMARY SOURCE
What Google actually says about getting into AI answers
Google's Search Central documentation now includes an official guide to its generative AI features — AI Overviews (the summary that appears above results) and AI Mode (the full AI chat tab). Three statements in it do most of the work:
"No additional requirements." There is nothing extra to install, submit, or configure to be eligible for AI answers. The AI features are described as rooted in Google's core search ranking and quality systems — if your pages can rank, they can be cited.
The special tricks are explicitly not needed. Google's guidance says you don't need llms.txt, AI-specific rewriting, content chunking, or special schema for its AI features. Anyone selling those as special AI-optimization deliverables is selling against the vendor's own documentation.
The fundamentals are the strategy. What Google points to instead is what it has always pointed to: helpful, people-first content, solid technical health, and structured data used honestly. For a local business there's one more piece the documentation's generality hides — your Google Business Profile — because in our own checks, AI Mode's local answers render as business cards carrying each business's rating, website, and address. The card is assembled from your profile and your site; a business without a real website has less to put on it.
- Official position: no additional requirements — AI answers ride core search rankings
- Explicitly not needed: llms.txt, AI-specific rewriting, content chunking, special schema
- What's rewarded: people-first content, technical health, honest structured data
- Local reality from our checks: AI Mode answers are cards built from your Business Profile and website
STEP-BY-STEP
How to show up in Google's AI answers, in 5 steps
Everything here follows from Google's published guidance plus what our checks observe about local answers. No step requires an agency.
Start from the real rulebook
Read what Google actually published, not what a vendor summarized: its AI-features guidance says there are no special requirements and no AI-specific optimizations — the same ranking systems decide search results and AI citations. Every dollar and hour you were about to spend on jargon-branded AI-optimization packages goes further on the fundamentals below.
Complete the local inputs: Business Profile and reviews
Local AI answers are assembled from local signals. Claim your Google Business Profile and fill every field — categories, services, areas served, hours, photos — then keep reviews arriving steadily and reply to them. In our checks, the businesses appearing in AI Mode's local cards carry their profile data into the answer: rating, review count, website, address.
Publish answer-shaped pages
AI Overviews quote pages that answer questions directly. Give each real customer question its own page — "How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?", "Do you do emergency callouts?" — with the direct answer in the first two sentences and the detail after. Headings that match how people actually ask make the extraction easy.
Keep the technical layer clean — ideally automatic
Crawlable pages, a current sitemap, honest structured data, fast mobile rendering. None of it should be a project: modern builders emit all of it on every publish. Zarla sites ship clean structure, meta tags, structured data, and open AI-crawler access automatically — the checklist Google describes, handled without a plugin.
Check your presence — and keep the dates
Search your real customer questions in AI Mode and see who's on the cards. AI answers change week to week, so note the date and re-check on a schedule — the trend across checks, not any single run, is the honest measure. Zarla's free checker runs the question on Google's AI and ChatGPT together and keeps the answers dated for you.
Are you on the card right now?
We ask Google's AI and ChatGPT the question your customers ask and show you exactly who comes back — named businesses, ratings, the works. Free, dated, word for word.

Common questions about Google AI Overviews
Per Google's own documentation: be rankable. There are no additional requirements — AI Overviews cite pages through the same ranking and quality systems as normal search, so the path in is helpful people-first content, clean technical health, and honest structured data. For a local business, add the local layer: a complete Google Business Profile and steady reviews, because local AI answers are assembled from those signals. Then verify rather than assume — check your real customer questions and note who gets cited. The ChatGPT side of the same playbook is in our guide to getting your business recommended by ChatGPT.
If you mean as a searcher: AI Overviews don't fire on every query — Google shows them where it judges a summary helps, and availability varies by region and query type. If you mean as a business — why your site isn't cited in them — the honest checklist is the one in this guide: rankable content that answers the question directly, clean technical health, and for local queries a strong Business Profile. And check the date-stamped reality more than once; which sites get cited shifts week to week.
No — and this one isn't a judgment call, it's Google's published position: no llms.txt, no AI-specific rewriting, no content chunking, no special schema are needed for its AI features. Standard structured data used honestly still helps machines understand your pages, and every published Zarla site emits it automatically. If you're curious why the llms.txt hype doesn't survive contact with the evidence, we wrote up the full story in our llms.txt guide.
AI Overviews is the AI-written summary that appears above normal search results for some queries. AI Mode is the full conversational tab — you ask in natural language and get a complete AI answer with follow-ups. For a local business the practical difference is how you appear: Overviews cite web pages, while AI Mode's local answers, in our checks, render as business cards carrying each business's rating, website, and address. Same underlying systems, two surfaces — and the same fundamentals feed both.
For informational questions, often yes — the answer gets read on Google and no one clicks anything. That's exactly why being the business named inside the answer now matters more than being a blue link under it. The visits that remain — someone who read the AI's answer and clicked through to you — arrive better-informed and closer to hiring. Fewer clicks, warmer clicks; your job is to be the name the answer carries.
Open Google, switch to AI Mode, and ask the question your customers ask — "best [your trade] in [your city]" — then read the cards: who's named, with what rating, linking to which website. Note the date, because the answer moves. Zarla's free AI Visibility Checker does this properly in about two minutes — Google's AI and ChatGPT in one run, answers word for word, matched against your Google Maps listing so a same-name business is never mistaken for you.
