The short answer

The median self-pay price for acupuncture is $112 for a first visit and $80 for a follow-up, across 723 US clinics in a 2019 study, with prices running from $15 to $400 (Copper Wellness, October 2026). Clinics' current lists sit higher: private follow-ups at about $90 to $185 and first private visits at about $125 to $230 (ThePricer, September 2026). CareCredit's national averages by type are $76 for traditional acupuncture, $66 for ear acupuncture, $126 for electroacupuncture and $150 for medical acupuncture (2024 cost study, read November 2026).

Community acupuncture is the other model: treatment in a shared room on a sliding scale — $20 to $40 a follow-up and $45 for a new patient at the Oakland Acupuncture Project, $50 to $90 at a Brooklyn shared-room clinic (ThePricer). Add-ons are priced on their own — cupping added to a session for $20 at WTHN, a first herbal consultation $105 at White Pine Acupuncture with the herbs on top, ear seeds $38 at Emily Grace Acupuncture.

Packages and memberships bring the per-session price down: five sessions for $450 and ten for $800 at a South Florida clinic, $90 and $80 a visit (ThePricer); $100 a month for one treatment at WTHN. In the US, insurance pays less than the fee — billing-software estimates for code 97810 run $30 to $40 from Medicare and $40 to $60 from the big commercial plans (Twofold, April 2025) — check each plan you take. Price from your cost per visit, then put the self-pay fee on your website: “acupuncture pricing” is Googled about 1,000 times a month and “how much does acupuncture cost” about 2,400 (DataForSEO, November 2026).

THE PRICING FORMULA

How to price an acupuncture practice

Six steps from your cost per visit to the price list on your website.

01

Count your cost per visit

A year's expenses ÷ a year's visits. A small practice in a for-sale listing that Working Class Acupuncture quoted in August 2025 averaged $50,079 a year of adjusted expenses over three years, on 77 visits a month — about $54 a visit, our arithmetic. Overhead in private practice typically runs 35% to 50% (Acupuncture Today, January 2012).

02

Pick the model: private room or community

A private room prices the visit: $90–$185 a follow-up on 2026 clinic lists (ThePricer, September 2026). A community clinic treats several patients at once on a $20–$40 sliding scale (Oakland Acupuncture Project) — a lower fee that only works at volume.

03

Price the first visit above the follow-up

The intake takes longer: the national medians are $112 for a first visit and $80 for a follow-up (Copper Wellness, October 2026); city medians in 2019 ran from $45 to $150 for a first visit and $40 to $108 for a follow-up (Acupuncture Today, October 2019).

04

List the add-ons separately

Cupping $20 added to a session (WTHN), ear seeds $38 (Emily Grace Acupuncture), a first herbal consultation $105 and a follow-up $85 with the herbs billed on top (White Pine Acupuncture). Decide which extras the session price already includes, and say so.

05

Build packages and memberships from the follow-up fee

Five sessions for $450 and ten for $800 — $90 and $80 a visit (ThePricer); $100 a month for one treatment, $185 for two (WTHN). Check the per-visit price against step 1 before you print it.

06

Know what insurance pays, then decide

In the US, billing-software estimates for code 97810: Medicare $30–$40, Aetna $45–$55, Blue Cross Blue Shield $50–$60 (Twofold, April 2025). An in-network practice lives on the contracted rate, not the list price — set the self-pay fee for the patients who pay it, and check each payer contract.

The formula, worked through

Take the small practice in a for-sale listing that Working Class Acupuncture quoted in August 2025: 77 visits a month, about 20 office hours a week, and three-year averages of $102,738 gross a year and $50,079 of adjusted expenses. That's about 924 visits a year — roughly $111 collected and $54 spent per visit, leaving about $57 a visit for the acupuncturist. The inputs are the publisher's; the arithmetic is ours.

A follow-up at $120 — inside the $90–$185 band on 2026 clinic lists — clears the $54 cost by $66. A first visit at $160, between the $112 national median and the $230 top of the 2026 range, covers the longer intake. A five-visit package at $525 is $105 a visit and still clears the cost by $51; a membership at $100 for one treatment a month only works if the member comes back.

So “first visit $160, follow-ups $120, five sessions $525” is a fair line for this practice's website. Your rent, your hours and how many patients you treat at once are what make the number yours.

What to charge in your part of the country

City medians in 2019 ran from $45 for a first visit in St. Louis to $150 in Charleston, South Carolina, and from $40 for a follow-up in Miami to $108 in Charleston (Acupuncture Today, October 2019). On 2026 lists, a New York clinic charges $230 for a first private visit, a Minnesota clinic $130 with $95 follow-ups, and a Colorado clinic $145 with $96 follow-ups (ThePricer, September 2026). The Bureau of Economic Analysis puts overall prices in California at 110.7 against a US average of 100 and Arkansas at 86.9 (2024 regional price parities, released February 2026) — so an $85 follow-up in an average market is about $94 in California and about $74 in Arkansas.

In the US, acupuncturists are licensed state by state — in New York, for example, by the State Education Department under Article 160 of the Education Law, and national certification on its own doesn't authorize practice (New York College of Health Professions, July 2026). The national certifying body, NCCAOM, became the National Certification Board for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (NCBAHM) in January 2026 (Acupuncture Today, October 2025). Medicare covers up to 12 acupuncture treatments in 90 days for chronic low back pain and 8 more if the patient shows improvement, 20 at most in 12 months, with the patient paying 20% after the Part B deductible (Medicare.gov, read November 2026). Private-plan coverage varies by plan and by state: CoveredUSA lists seven states that put acupuncture in their essential-benefits plans — California, Maryland, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington, and notes Colorado added acupuncture in a 2023 benchmark update (May 2026) — and Medicaid coverage varies state to state (Copper Wellness). Check your state board's rules and the plans you take before you publish a fee or a package.

Outside the US, treat the ranges as a shape, not a price — a first visit priced above the follow-up, add-ons listed apart, packages built from the follow-up fee hold everywhere — and check what local acupuncturists list on their own websites, and your local rules.

Put your prices on your website

A price list — even “from” prices — answers a customer's first question before they pick up the phone, and it's the line an AI assistant can quote when someone asks what an acupuncture session costs near them.

If you build your site with Zarla, tell the editor “add a pricing section: first visit $160, follow-ups from $120, five sessions $525” and your prices go on the site, in a section you can edit any time. Acupuncture pricing: common questions

How much do acupuncturists charge per session?

The national median self-pay price is $80 for a follow-up and $112 for a first visit, from a 2019 study of 723 clinics (Copper Wellness, October 2026). Clinics' 2026 lists run higher: $90–$185 for a private follow-up and about $125–$230 for a first private visit (ThePricer, September 2026). The calculator above prices any visit with the add-ons.

How much should I charge for a first acupuncture visit?

Above the follow-up, because the intake takes longer: the national median first visit is $112 against $80 for a follow-up (Copper Wellness). Published first visits include $160 at Emily Grace Acupuncture in New York City, $185 at White Pine Acupuncture and $230 at a New York clinic on ThePricer's list.

What does community acupuncture charge?

A sliding scale, most often $20–$40 a visit: the Oakland Acupuncture Project charges $20–$40 for follow-ups and $45 for a new patient, and Working Class Acupuncture runs its own $20–$40 sliding scale, with a quarterly bulk-rate sale of five treatments for $85 (April 2024). Pacific College's Chicago teaching clinic charged $20 for community acupuncture as of May 2025 (Copper Wellness). Treatment happens in a shared room, so the fee works at volume.

How much should an acupuncture package or membership cost?

Packages price each session a little under the single fee: five sessions for $450 and ten for $800 at a South Florida clinic, $90 and $80 a visit (ThePricer); five for $550 and ten for $1,050 at Emily Grace Acupuncture in New York City. WTHN's memberships are $100 a month for one treatment and $185 for two, with half off add-ons on those two plans.

Does insurance cover acupuncture, and what does it pay?

Sometimes. Visits with any coverage rose from 41.1% in 2010–2011 to 50.2% in 2018–2019 (Copper Wellness). In the US, Medicare covers up to 12 treatments in 90 days for chronic low back pain, plus 8 more if the patient shows improvement, 20 a year at most, with a 20% coinsurance after the Part B deductible (Medicare.gov). Billing-software estimates for code 97810 are $30–$40 from Medicare and $40–$60 from the large commercial plans (Twofold, April 2025); ACA-plan copays run about $15–$60 a visit (CoveredUSA, May 2026). Coverage depends on the plan and the state — check each patient's plan.

How much should I charge for cupping and herbs?

As their own lines: WTHN adds cupping to a session for $20, while a 30-minute cupping session is $75 at Emily Grace Acupuncture and $85 at White Pine Acupuncture. White Pine charges $105 for a first herbal consultation and $85 for a follow-up, with the herbs billed on top; Emily Grace charges $80 and $40. Ear seeds are $38 at Emily Grace.

How much does an acupuncturist make?

The median wage is $36.56 an hour, $76,040 a year (O*NET, 2025 wages). A small practice listed for sale averaged $102,738 gross and $52,659 net a year over three years, on 77 visits a month and about 20 office hours a week (Working Class Acupuncture, August 2025).

Should I put my acupuncture prices on my website?

Yes — the first-visit fee, the follow-up fee and any package, listed plainly. Patients compare before they book, and a published fee list is what ranks for the cost searches. On a Zarla site, tell the editor “add a pricing section” with your fees, and change them when you review them.
